02 Good Pub Guide
Raise A Glass To The
Great British Pub
Throughout Britain, pubs are right
at the heart of the community, and
are a much-loved part of our culture.
According to the British Beer & Pub
Association (BBPA), around 15 million
people socialise in pubs across the
country every week!
Our love affair with the public house
began back in Roman times when the
first inns, known as tabernae, appeared.
However, it’s the Anglo-Saxons who
helped establish the pub as we know
it today. Their alehouses grew out
of domestic dwellings and formed
meeting houses for local communities,
eventually becoming so popular that in
965AD, King Edgar was forced to limit
alehouses to just one per village.
Over the last decade, pubs have slowly
started to transform into welcoming
places for families and young children,
but since the smoking ban came into
force in July 2007, almost every pub has
changed from a drinking establishment
targeting groups of friends on nights
out, to a relaxing, family friendly venue.
This switch in focus has caused many
pubs to focus on the food they serve
(affectionately known as ‘pub grub’),
with more than 80% of Britain’s pubs
now serving food that caters for a wide
range of tastes (according to the BBPA);
no longer do drinkers have to put up
with servings of crisps, peanuts and
pork scratching, they can now enjoy
delicious, home-cooked meals. The
food menu is now almost as important
as the beer menu.
Many of these pubs have turned to
local produce in a bid to stimulate
local economies, as well as providing
healthy, fresh food for customers,
which often rivals some of the best
restaurants. Some pubs have taken
their focus on food to the next
level and have become known as
‘gastropubs’. These pubs offer diners
food that is prepared to the highest
standards, as well as complementing
the range of beer, ales and wines on
offer.
Not only do pubs now offer delicious
meals, but they also cater for the
whole family with a variety of regular
activities, such as pub quizzes, games
such as darts and billiards, and even
karaoke nights; many even have a
range of games such as pool tables,
quiz machines and games consoles
with games such as Guitar Hero®. Pubs
really have transformed themselves
into social settings for everyone, not
just drinkers looking to get drunk!
The Great British Beer Festival, Britain’s
biggest beer festival organised by
The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA),
is taking place until August 6th at
London’s Earls Court. Building on last
year, where over 66,000 people flocked
to Earls Court over the five-day Festival,
CAMRA this year promises a staggering
700-plus British real ales, ciders, perries,
and foreign beers from as far afield
as USA and Australia. With demand
for tickets even greater than in 2010,
CAMRA hopes that in its last year at
London’s Earls Court (before moving
to London Olympia for 2012), more
punters than ever will come to sample
Britain’s National Drink. If you fancy it,
head to gbbf.camra.org.uk for more
info and tickets.
The Hill House
Happisburgh NR12 0PW Tel & Fax: 01692 650004
This attractive free house on the lovely Norfolk coast at Happisburgh (pronounced
‘Hazeborough’) was once the favourite haunt of the remarkable Sir Arthur Conan Doyle,
creator of Sherlock Holmes. Clues may be found in that the coastline here is renowned
for its ghosts and has been a graveyard for ships over the years which have foundered on
the formidable Hiasborough Sands, some seven miles off-shore.
However, conviviality and good fare
is provided by a visit to the inn’s
beamed bar and restaurant. Excellent
accommodation is available in
spacious rooms and there is a large
garden in which a double en-suite
room has been created in a converted
signal box overlooking the sea
Eat, Drink &
Relax At
The Cock Inn
A traditional village pub with a warm
and friendly atmosphere, Derbyshire’s
The Cock Inn is well worth a visit. The
wholesome home-cooked food available
at The Cock Inn is well-renowned locally
and as the pub boasts the Cask Mark
Award, you’re guaranteed great ales too.
Landlord and lady, Andrew and Lorraine
Garside, have been at the Clifton pub for
eight years and are immensely proud of its
great reputation. Andrew says: “It’s a proper
olde world village pub, with dark oak beams
and roaring fire place, and it has this unique
atmosphere that just draws you in.”
If you’re looking to eat out in Derbyshire,
you won’t find better pub fair than that
offered by chef Lorraine, who offers
something to tempt all tastebuds, as
Andrew explains: “We offer everything from
scampi and proper pies to our popular house
specials, which may include pork medallions
or lamb shank. We also do a Sunday roast
special, with a choice of two meats, and can
easily cater for most dietary requirements.
We also focus on local produce and source
all of our meats from a popular local butcher
and our vegetables from the Matlock-based
GP Produce.”
The Cock Inn’s outstanding reputation
means their dining room is always
busy, so booking is advisable to avoid
disappointment. Food is available Tuesday
to Sunday from 12noon – 2pm and
6:30pm to 8:30pm. Special occasions,
including birthdays and christenings, can
also be held in the private dining room,
which seats up to 20.
A traditional pub wouldn’t be complete
without traditional ales; Andrew and
Lorraine are proud to have held the Cask
Award Mark throughout their time at The
Cock Inn and always offer a choice of four
ales. Marston’s Pedigree, Timothy Taylor’s
Landlord, Abbot Ale and Bombardier are
all currently available.
With a large beer garden, children’s
playground and warm welcome, there are
plenty of reasons to visit The Cock Inn.
The Devonshire Arms
Situated in the heart of South Normanton in Derbyshire,
The Devonshire Arms is a traditional pub with a friendly
atmosphere, good food, great local ales and a warm
welcome from owners Trish and William Henry.
Trish told Reflect: “We bought The Devonshire Arms six
years ago derelict. The building has been here since 1784,
so we spent six months completely refurbishing it and
bringing it up to standard – we opened our doors on 23rd
December 2005 and have been open, and at the heart of
the community ever since.”
The Devonshire Arms offers a delicious menu of freshly
cooked dishes Monday to Saturday from 12noon
until 8pm, as well as a mouth-watering carvery on
Sundays from 12noon until 3pm – booking on Sundays
is recommended. Trish added: “We’re not a fast food
kitchen; we cook everything to order, so if you fancy
something that’s not on the menu and we have it in the
kitchen we can cook it. We can pretty much cook anything
you want: steak, fish, homemade pies and curry to name
a few.”
As well as tasty meals, The Devonshire Arms also offers
a range of local real ales, including Sarah Hughes and
Dark Ruby as well as Old Rosie Cider, as well as a variety
of beers (bitters, milds and lagers), wines and spirits.
Trish said: “As I said, we opened in December 2005 and by
spring 2006 had won our first CAMRA (Campaign for Real
Ale) award – we’ve also been fortunate to win Seasonal
Pub of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2010. We pride ourselves
on offering a relaxing, welcoming and family-friendly
environment in which to enjoy a nice meal or refreshing
drink. We don’t have live music, quiz nights or events –
we’re just a good, old-fashioned pub.”
Located just one-mile from Junction 28 of the M1
motorway, The Devonshire Arms is within easy reach
of Mansfield, Derby and Chesterfield, as well as being
at the gateway to the Peak District, making it the ideal
place to enjoy a post, or pre, walking pint!
The Peak
District’s
Best Pubs
Boasting the best views in the Peak District,
the Millstone Inn is the perfect place to
enjoy a quiet drink and a traditional pub
meal – it’s no wonder the former coaching
inn is so popular with walkers, cyclists and
locals alike.
It’s perhaps the charming old-fashioned feel
of the Millstone and the warm welcome
offered by landlord, Jerry Buckingham, that
has made it a haven for passersby. With
mouth-watering pub grub served seven
days a week and a choice of six cask ales,
there’s certainly something to please all
who visit.
Landlord for 20 years, it’s easy to see why
Jerry was drawn to this wonderful place –
the glorious views over the National Park
are second-to-none. Jerry says: “I love the
Peak District and I love the Millstone Inn; we’re
a family-run pub, we’re very friendly and we
guarantee great food, great beer and great
company.”
Children are always welcome at the
Millstone and will love the pub’s resident
goats and micro-pigs, including the 21 new
arrivals, whilst the terrace allows all visitors
to soak up panoramic views of Derbyshire.
The Millstone is open every day from 11am
to 11pm, with food served from 12noon to
9pm (9:30pm on Saturdays and 8:30pm on
Sundays). Visit on a Sunday to indulge the
best carvery in the area, featuring a choice
of three joints, from 12noon to 3pm.
For those bowled over by the traditional
public house and its location, the eight
en-suite bed and breakfast rooms allow
visitors to extend their stay and soak up
the best of the Peak District. Choose from
a family, double or twin room and enjoy a
traditional English fry-up for breakfast.
The Millstone Inn’s sister pub, The Angel
Inn in Holmesfield, is also run by the
Buckingham family, with Jerry’s brother,
Nigel, at the helm. The Angel also boasts
fantastic food, a warm atmosphere and
ample charm.
Enjoy A Perfect Pint At
John Thompson Inn
With traditional charm in abundance,
fascinating history and wonderful views,
The John Thompson Inn and Brewery is
the jewel in Derbyshire’s crown. Located in
Ingleby and overlooking the River Trent, it’s
a much-loved place for drinking and dining.
At the family-run freehouse a warm
welcome is always guaranteed – it’s no
wonder people make the pilgrimage from
far and wide to enjoy its hearty ales, famous
carvery, open fires and stunning location.
The Thompson family are immensely proud
of their inn and the achievements they
have made over the years, as Landlord, Nick
Thompson, explains: “In 1968, John and
Ann Thompson converted their 15th Century
farmhouse into The John Thompson Inn – the
very first in Great Britain to be named after its
licensee and owner. In 1977, we reintroduced
brewing to the county and now proudly hold
the title of being the longest established
micro-brewery in Derbyshire. Our first beer
was the JTS XXX, which was first brewed to
celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee
and has been brewed uninterrupted onsite
ever since.”
The brewery also produces seasonal ales of
Gold, Rich Porter and St Nick’s, which can
be supped inside the cosy pub or outside
on the garden terrace. If you’re also feeling
peckish, the popular lunchtime carvery
available Tuesdays to Sundays – is not to be
missed. There’s also a function room for hire
and six self-catering log cabins onsite for
those who want to extend their stay.
John Thompson’s history isn’t the only
aspect that makes this business stand out,
their emphasis on creating a traditional
pub atmosphere is also rather unique in
the modern world. Nick says: “We have
no quiz, karaoke or live entertainment and
many of our guests visit us for the consistently
high standards of service and friendly and
welcoming environment that we strive
to provide. We pride ourselves on being a
traditional destination brew pub and people
come from all over to enjoy the atmosphere.”
A Traditional British Pub At
Its Best: Barley Mow Inn
Situated in the picturesque village of Kirk Ireton in
Derbyshire, the Barley Mow Inn is a traditional pub
offering a warm welcome, a relaxing atmosphere
and good quality beer! The Barley Mow Inn is the
only pub left in Kirk Ireton and it’s not hard to see
why this charming, character-laden inn has stood
the test of time, focusing on real ale and good
conversation.
Landlady, Mrs Mary Short, told Reflect: “The Barley
Mow is one of the oldest buildings in the village;
the front extension, which is the newest part of the
building, is dated 1683, which gives you some idea
of the history here. We moved here in 1976 after a
spontaneous bid at the auction; we knew nothing
about the licensed trade – it was a rapid learning
curve! It’s heavily beamed inside and each room
is small but that adds to the cosy warm feel of the
inn. We run the pub as pubs have always been run
and we’ve hardly changed anything in 35 years.
The inn is pretty unique and unusual; we only use
pumps for the lager and all our ales are from barrels
that are stored directly behind the bar’s wooden
counter. There’s a real coal fire, which roars in the
winter months, slate-topped tables and shuttered
mullioned windows, as well as built-in cushioned
pews on oak parquet for visitors and locals alike to
enjoy.”
As well as being a cosy destination to enjoy a
refreshing ale after a long day at work, the Barley
Mow Inn also has five en-suite bedrooms (four
double and one single) for visitors from afar who’d
like to make the most of the rural location that’s
within walking distance of Carsington Water.
Accommodation is on a bed and breakfast basis
and evening meals are available only for overnight
guests. Simple filled bread rolls are served at
lunchtime from 12noon until 2pm, while the inn
reopens at 7pm until 11pm, apart from Sundays
when last orders are called at 10:30pm.
Outside, the Barley Mow Inn boasts a good-sized
garden with a couple of benches for those sunny
summer evenings. Based in the old stables, you’ll
find the community-run village shop, which
opened when the previous shop closed. Mrs Short
explained: “The Stable Shop is run on a not-forprofit
basis by a number of dedicated volunteers
as well as a handful of paid staff. It provides the
community and our visitors with a wide choice and
excellent value from a small village store, using local
volunteers and suppliers to give an outstanding
service. It’s a decent little shop that’s open every day.”
To experience this charming rural gem for
yourself, pop into the Barley Mow Inn any day
between 12noon and 2pm or 7pm and 11pm
(10:30pm Sundays) at Kirk Main Street, Kirk Ireton,
Autism Awareness
With Anna Kennedy
The autistic spectrum covers a range of developmental
handicaps, including Asperger’s syndrome, which impair
a person’s ability to communicate with and relate to
others. Individuals with an Autistic Spectrum Condition
(ASC) can be affected in a wide range of different ways.
While some need full-time support, others manage to
live almost undisturbed by the condition.
or just admire Anna’s determination to get the right education for her sons
and other children like them, it’s worth a read; and it’s not just us who think it’s
great – ‘Not Stupid’ has been given five stars from Amazon reviewers. It’s now
available to buy and download to read on your Kindle; just visit
Situated in five acres of grounds in Bromley, Kent, Baston House School
opened its doors in January (after a refurbishment) to children aged between
three and a half and 19-years-old, to provide a centre of excellence in
education and development for children who have been diagnosed with an
Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC). The School is the brainchild of autism
awareness campaigner, Anna Kennedy, who opened her first school, Hillingdon
Manor, in September 1999, after her two sons, Patrick and Angelo, had
applications to attend 26 special schools within an hour’s drive of their home
TURNED DOWN.
Although Baston House School has been open to pupils since January, Thursday
June 9th marked its official opening thanks to a visit from the Prime Minister’s
wife, Samantha Cameron. Mrs Cameron said: “I am delighted to open Baston
House School. I have great admiration for Anna Kennedy’s determination to help
people affected by autism and I’m pleased to celebrate this landmark opening with
her. She was quite rightly named ‘Most Inspirational Woman of the Year’ by the Daily
Mail in 2010 and I’m so pleased she has achieved her ambition of opening this
school, which stands as testament to her
dedication to this important cause.” For
Anna is currently lending her support to the West London Community
College Football Club, a team established for adults diagnosed with an ASC,
all of whom attend West London Community College, a small, independent
life skills centre which caters for the specific and complex needs of adult
students with ASC that Anna helped to establish. Along with the team, Anna is
looking to raise £5,000 to enable the team and staff to travel to Gran Canaria
in November 2011 to participate in the 2nd Festival Del Balon International
Football disability tournament. If you would like any further information, or
would like to sponsor the team, email anna@annakennedyonline.com
With instances of autism growing alarmingly in Britain, the facilities provided by
Anna (and those like her) are needed more than ever in order to help as many
children as possible fulfil their true potential. If you’d like to make a donation
the time to document her inspiring
story in the book, ‘Not Stupid: The
Heartbreaking, Inspiring True Story
10 Frugal With Food
Make Your Food Go
By Neil Walker, our resident chef
Make Your
Own Bread
The average price of a decent loaf
of bread is approximately £1.30, yet
with one bag of flour (approx 80p)
and three sachets of yeast (10p
each – or even free if you ask your
local baker for some fresh yeast),
you can make enough dough to
make six loaves of freshly made
bread, working out at less than 20p
a loaf! Also if you have the time
(which I know we don’t all have)
and enjoy making your own bread,
why not try rolling the dough out
to make pizza bases, pitta breads,
fruit buns, foccacia bread – the list is
endless!
Get The Most
From Your
Chicken
By not throwing away the carcass
of your whole Sunday roast chicken,
stripping off the meat and then
boiling the bones up, you can make
a perfectly healthy and delicious
soup. Just add some vegetables
from your veg patch or any veg in
your fridge that is nearing its shelf
life, re-add the chicken meat and
boil up for 15 minutes and whizz in
the blender!
Grow Your Own
Vegetables
Clear and designate an area of
your garden (presuming you have
one) and get growing! The cost of
fruit and vegetables has soared and
with prices set to continue rising,
this – to me – is the most sensible
solution to saving money on your
food bills. Although I don’t have
the greenest of fingers in the world,
I still manage to turn out a couple
of decent crops of potatoes each
year (grown in old buckets), a
healthy crop of cherry tomatoes
(grown in hanging baskets instead
of flowers) and there’s a whole
corner of my garden purely
dedicated to herbs, although after
the harsh winter we’ve had, my
rosemary, sage and bay trees have
all died.
11
Further
It
is possible to live very well on very little if
you are careful; so much food waste could
be prevented with good cooking skills, better
use of resources and a bit of home-grown veg.
Even if you don’t have a garden, a lot of stuff
can still be grown in a window box, such as
herbs, lettuce, spring onions and radishes.
As inflation climbs and food prices soar, the
notion of eating for just £5 a day might be
hard to swallow – but here are some useful
tips on getting the most for your money…
Forage For Food
A bounty of free food is available out there in our
hedgerows, seashores, fields, meadows, forests; in fact
it’s everywhere you turn, especially if you live in my
world! Even if it’s only foods that you can easily identify
(think blackberries, wild apple trees, nettles, dandelions,
elderflowers etc).Unfortunately, living in land-locked
Leicester, I don’t have the seashore and all of its free
harvest of food at my disposal; however I’ve brought a
couple of books on foraging for food (check out Hugh
Fearnley-Whittingstall’s website for a selection of books
on the subject) and often go out armed with a carrier
bag and my book when taking my dog on her walkies.
B.O.G.O.F
A common form of sales promotion used by
supermarkets, B.O.G.O.F stands for Buy One Get One
Free on a range of products – buy two get two free
and buy one get two free are other common offers.
Originally, B.O.G.O.F was a sudden end of season or
stock clearance method used by supermarkets that
had been left with a large quantity of stock that they
needed selling quickly. More recently it has become a
popular, planned and considered marketing strategy.
Despite seeming like great ideas, these kind of deals
and promotions often lead to the greatest waste of
food. For example, buying three icebergs lettuces for
the price of two – unless you intend on having salad
everyday for the next week, it will just sit in the bottom
of your fridge and go off! I tend to only buy B.O.G.O.F
items with a long shelf life, such as tinned tomatoes,
baked beans or frozen items.
By following these tips and eating seasonal food, you
can reduce your food bills and spend the savings on
luxuries or treats. Keep an eye out for more seasonal
recipes each month in Reflect.
12 Educational Days Out
Learn Something
New This Summer
If your kids are bored with being cooped up in the house during the school
holidays, it’s time to plan some inspiring days out. Whilst are hopes of a long, hot
summer have been dashed, it’s no reason to stay at home; Britain is bursting with
great days out that promise a whole lot of fun with an educational twist.
In Britain, our love of the past is clear for all to see, from Listed buildings to ancient
castles, vintage fashion to traditional recipes, we embrace any chance to celebrate
items and ideas from a bygone era. However, for youngsters, a day out which
incorporates items and ideas from the past can also provide a unique glimpse
of how life in Britain used to be. So, why not head out for a day and discover the
world of nostalgia that exists at our numerous museums.
Take your children on a journey through time by visiting a vintage steam museum.
Combining old-fashioned charm with light-hearted fun, steam rallies offer younger
generations the chance to see amazing feats of engineering in action and actually
take a ride on them, as well as learning a little of their historic importance.
In Britain, steam locomotives dominated the railways in the 19th and early
20th Centuries, and were improved greatly during this time, but were gradually
phased out. Britain’s love of steam eventually came to an end in the 60s, as diesel
locomotives took over. Diesel locomotive trials started as early as the 1930s, but its
development was halted during the World War II and the availability of cheap coal
kept the steam locomotive in widespread use. However, towards the end of the
1960s the cost of running a steam locomotive became four times more expensive
than the diesel equivalent and steam railways became a distant memory.
For many children, and even some adults, imagining a world without mobile
phones, iPods and the Internet, never mind electricity, is simply impossible. We’re
so accustomed to having unlimited access to these electronic luxuries that we find
it difficult to comprehend an era where people read by candlelight and enjoyed
simpler pleasures. Children can also gain an insight into how ‘the other half lived’
by taking a wander around one of the many grand stately homes that our country
is famous for, where children can see, touch and feel what life was like during a
different era.
Keeping your children’s leisure time educational, as well as fun, will ensure their
minds are kept active ready for the start of the new school year.
Located in the heart of Buckinghamshire’s beautiful
countryside and covering a mammoth 25 acres,
Buckinghamshire Railway Centre promises a
charming and nostalgic day out. With a wealth of
exhibits, including impressive locomotives and
vintage wagons, and an exciting calendar of events
throughout the year, all ages will be kept easily
entertained.
Taking you on a journey to the past, the centre’s
working steam museum offers a rare glimpse at
these giant and magnificent feats of engineering.
Express passenger locomotives sit alongside humble
shunting engines and can be admired as you wander
the spacious museum, whilst a carriage used by
General Eisenhower and Winston Churchill during
wartime Britain and a Royal train dining car from
1901 are sights to marvel. For those too young to
remember and those who want to reminisce, there are
also exhibits that reveal Britain’s railway history and
provide a fascinating look at how steam transformed
our country.
Fun For All At
Buckinghamshire Railway Centre
At Buckinghamshire Railway Centre it’s all
about enjoying a day out with a difference,
which is why they have a packed schedule of
events planned throughout 2011. For those
who want to see, hear and feel what life in
the past was really like, the special Victorian
days and evacuation days offer an experience of
history like no other, whilst the steam rally and
enthusiast days also guarantee that those with a real
passion for the railways can also enjoy a great day out.
Proving to be a big hit with the young and young at
heart, the centre’s Day Out With Thomas events are
always a major draw. As well as meeting Thomas the
Tank Engine – who has remained a children’s favourite
for several decades – visitors can also enjoy magic
shows, Punch ‘n’ Judy, storytelling, arts and crafts, the
Thomas DVD theatre and rides from the famous big
blue engine’s cousins.
Committed to making a positive contribution to
Britain’s industrial heritage, Buckinghamshire Railway
Centre is an organisation largely run by dedicated
volunteers and they’re always on the lookout for
enthusiasts who want to get involved. Whether it’s
helping with restoration, driving a steam engine or
giving guided tours, help is always warmly welcomed.
Buckinghamshire Railway Centre is open seven
days a week from the end of March to the end of
October and opens for Santa steaming days during
December. The centre operates as a static museum
when not running steam open days or special events.
Gates open at 10.30am and free parking is available.
Educational visits are always welcomed and the centre
Wistow Maze 13
BEE
A-MAZED…
What’s All The
BUZZ About At
Wistow Maze
Leicestershire’s famous Wistow Maze is now open for
another summer. Following a wildlife theme this year,
the maize Maze has been designed in the shape of a
giant honey bee, complete with a hive. Hours of fun and
entertainment for children and adults alike lie in store
when exploring the giant maze, created out of eight acres
of living maize crop.
“The number of bumble bees has declined by around 70%
since the 1970s, and honey bee numbers have fallen by 15%
over the past two years, according to official UK Government
figures. Our 2011 Honey Bee Maze is designed to raise
awareness of the plight of our bee populations and their
importance to the environment, as well as providing a fun and
educational day out for the whole family. However it is not
just our bee populations that need our help,” explains Diana
Brooks, owner of the Wistow Maze. “Many other species
are also under threat and our QUIZ TRAIL this year will
highlight other wildlife, such as the dormouse, red squirrel
and otter, with clues to be found amongst the three miles of
intricate pathways cut into the maize.”
Winner of Leicestershire’s ‘Best Visitor Attraction’, the
Wistow Maze attracts about 15,000 visitors on an annual
basis. Situated just south of Leicester, the maze also
incorporates high level bridges and viewing towers, giving
visitors stunning 3D panoramic views of the complex
maze and beautiful surrounding countryside.
The Wistow Maze is a great family day out. Having
experienced the ‘real thing’, visitors can then take part
in a variety of mini mazes, games and table top activities
in the Activity Funyard. There is also a space hopper
track, hoopla and football shooting game, with light
refreshments available. Opposite is the Wistow Rural
Centre with a café/bistro, garden centre, model village,
farm shop, aquatic centre and many shops selling furniture,
gifts, jewellery and much more.
The Wistow Maze is open seven days a week, 10am until
6pm from Saturday 16th July until Sunday 4th September
(then weekends only until Sunday 25th September).
Admission costs: Adult Ticket £5.95, Child Ticket £4.95,
Family Ticket £19.95 (2+2). FREE PARKING
• Bees never sleep
• A bee will visit 50-100 flowers during one
trip
• A queen bee can lay up to 2,000 eggs a day,
bees live for 6-8 weeks, it takes 3 weeks to
develop in the hive
• To collect a pound of honey a bee might
have to fly a distance equivalent to twice
round the world. This is likely to involve
more than 10,000 flower visits on perhaps
500 foraging trips
• In the UK there are approximately 44,000
beekeepers looking after around 240,000
hives, and they produce 6,000 tones of
honey per year; however, we produce only
20% of the honey we consume - the rest is
imported
If you want to help honey bees without
having a hive, then become an ‘Armchair
Beekeeper’ and sign up to the BBKA’s
‘Adopt A Beehive’ campaign
(see www.adoptabeehive.co.uk).
16 Family Days Out
Delightful Days Out…
For The Whole Family
©Britainonview / Pawel Libera
With just three weeks of the school
summer holidays left, we bet your kids are
already complaining of being ‘bored’. Why
not give their brains a break from the TV,
Internet or games console and get them
out of the house, and enjoy a day out as
a family.
When it comes to planning days out,
there’s plenty of choice both locally
and nationally to keep kids of all ages
amused. The Reflect region is simply
teaming with museums, art galleries and
undiscovered gems, but as they’re right
on our doorstep they’re easily forgotten.
As most of these are either free or require
just a small donation to look around, they
can provide a few hours of entertainment
whilst saving you valuable pennies.
To entertain the entire family, from the
oldest to the youngest, Reflect would
highly recommend visiting one of the
many restored and revived railways
that are operating up and down the UK.
There’s a whole steam revival happening
across the UK. For those looking for a day
out that combines old-fashioned charm
with views of Britain’s beautiful scenery, a
visit to one of our country’s many steam
railway attractions is a must. There are
many locations up and down the country
where you can take a trip back in time
and enjoy a ride on one of the oldest
forms of transport.
Ideal for families, couples and friends,
the Great British Heritage Pass allows you
Beacon Hill
Country Park
to explore Britain on a budget and skip
those pesky queues. For a small price, you
can choose a pass that lasts between four
and 30 days, which grants you access to
580 stately homes, castles and gardens
up and down the country, including
Shakespeare’s birthplace. Get yours from
For those who want to get outside and
enjoy the great outdoors, the 130,000
miles of public footpaths that stretch
through the countryside of England
and Wales offer a great opportunity to
embrace nature. Whether you’re a serious
rambler or fancy a leisurely wander,
there are 15 long-distance National Trails
providing beautiful scenery and the
chance to spot Britain’s native wildlife.
It’s not just during the summer holidays
that you should make the most of your
family time together; why not dedicate
one day a week to doing something fun
with the whole family. It’s easy to get
stuck in a rut and do the same things
each weekend – in fact according to
psychologist Ben Fletcher, we spend 85%
of our time doing the same activities –
so by making a conscious effort to do
something different and fun, you’ll enjoy
spending time with your family more.
The Merseyside Tramway Preservation
Society is one of Britain’s best known
transport restoration groups. It was originally
established back in 1960 by students from
Liverpool University, who wanted to save one
of the city’s famous Green Goddesses, then
operating in Glasgow.
Today its collection amply illustrates the
development of Britain’s first generation
tramways from the horse and steam tram era
to a fully enclosed electric bogie car. There’s
also a single deck continental tram and an
overhead maintenance wagon from the 1940s.
Nowadays, the historic vehicles operate on
the mile long Wirral Heritage Tramway with its
spectacular views of Liverpool’s world-famous
waterfront and perform a unique educational
and recreational function; so members of the
public and school parties can enjoy a nostalgic
journey back in time for a modest fare.
The Raptor Foundation Scoops
Certificate of Recognition
The recession and following economic
uncertainty has caused many of us to keep a
closer eye on the pounds, and pence, in our
pockets. As such, the amount of people donating
to charity has fallen. Established in 1995, The
Raptor Foundation provides 24-hour rescue and
rehabilitation for injured birds of prey, such as
buzzards, kestrels and tawny owls.
Foundation Director, Liz Blows, told Reflect: “The Raptor Foundation initially started in my
garden with one tawny owl but as the number of birds grew, the spare space in my garden
decreased. A year later in 1996, we moved to our current site, which was a derelict farm
at the time, and set up a gift shop, tea room, offices and plenty of aviaries to house the
birds. In 2000, we received funding from the Landfill Tax Credit scheme and built The Raptor
Foundation Centre as you see it today. It’s hard to believe that The Raptor Foundation started
as a hobby for my ex-partner, but has grown into a full-time job for me and seven staff.”
The Raptor Foundation not only rescues and rehabilitates; it also provides a permanent, caring
environment for over 200 birds, comprising over 40 different species that are unable to return
to the wild. Liz added: “We manage to get 60% to 70% of our rescued birds rehabilitated and
back into the wild, but there are always a few who cannot be released. There’s not a day that
goes by that we don’t have birds in our hospital, even at Christmas; we currently have barn
owls, buzzards, tawny owls and kestrel youngsters in there, which we hope to release into the
wild in a week or two.”
Providing such a vital service to our birds of prey, Reflect have awarded The Raptor Foundation
a Certificate of Recognition for Animal Welfare. Reflect Editor Elaine Ellis explained: “The
Raptor Foundation does an excellent job caring for hundreds of birds each year, however, the
economic climate has hit them hard; they’re always in need of donations to continue their
vital work. People seem to have not only limited how much they donate, but also where they
donate. I appreciate that every penny is hard earned at the moment, but without kind and
generous donations, small charities like The Raptor Foundation simply won’t survive and
that’d be such a shame. Our birds of prey are often forgotten, but many people
don’t realise their positive impact our countryside; they help maintain the natural
balance of the food chain, ensuring our countryside environment is maintained for
future generations. Not only this but they’re also a thrill to see, soaring high in the
sky in the British countryside. This is why I had to select The Raptor Foundation for
this Certificate of Recognition.”
19
Rescuing approximately 170 birds of prey each year, The Raptor Foundation is always
in need of more funds. The simplest way to help is by making a donation, either by
sending a cheque, made payable to ‘The Raptor Foundation’, or by calling 01487 741140
(all major credit and debit cards acceptable). Other than making a donation, you could
join The Raptor Foundation’s ‘Adopt A Bird’ scheme. The scheme enables individuals to
‘adopt’ a bird by contributing to their upkeep over the year for just £55. The adoptee
will receive a framed photograph of the adopted bird, an adoption certificate and their
name will be displayed by the bird of their choice. In addition, the adoptee will receive
one year’s free family membership.
The Raptor Foundation’s advice if you find an injured bird
of prey:
• Don’t panic.
• Keep children and all other animals (dogs in particular)
away.
• Unless the bird is obviously injured or in immediate
danger, the best course of action is to leave the bird where
it is. Contact your local vet, any local animal hospital or
phone The Raptor Foundation on 01487 741140 – this
phone line is manned 24 hours a day.
• If you need to handle the bird, wear thick gloves (beware
of both the beak and feet).
• If you need to move the bird, wrap it in something warm
and place it in a box with plenty of ventilation and keep it
warm and dark. The box should be lined with newspaper or
a clean cloth; do NOT use straw or hay as this can give the
birds a fungal lung infection.
• Try not to disturb the bird and get professional help as
soon as possible.
• Do not try to feed or give it a drink unless you are advised
to do so.
The Raptor Foundation Centre is open seven days a week from 10am until 5pm
and there are three flying displays each day at 12noon, 2pm and 4pm. Liz said: “We
have different birds flying at each display and we like to get the public involved,
having a go at flying our birds. It’s a great day out for the whole family and the
small admission charge goes towards our work, rescuing and rehabilitating these
wonderful birds of prey.”
Man’s effect on the environment has rarely been out of the spotlight over
the last decade. Increasing numbers of people believe that we must reduce
our carbon emissions and our individual carbon footprint to help maintain
the world we know, for future generations. In the past, Reflect have given
you endless tips on reducing your home’s carbon footprint, but this week
we would like to concentrate on reducing your holiday carbon footprint.
Did you know that one flight across the Atlantic uses as much petrol as the
average car driver does in 50 years Holidaying in and around the UK is the
ONLY way to significantly reduce your holiday carbon footprint, as well as
ensuring your annual break doesn’t cost the Earth money-wise.
From the unspoilt landscapes of exceptional beauty, fertile valleys and
dales of Yorkshire to the spectacular coastlines and mild climate of
Cornwall, England has something to suit all ages, tastes and budgets. From
spectacular coastlines to beautiful nature trails and from numerous historic
sites to the hustle and bustle of city life, Wales has something for everyone.
Popular places include Snowdonia National Park, the seaside town of
Aberystwyth and The National Botanical Gardens. From the hustle and
bustle of Glasgow and Edinburgh to the calmness and tranquillity of the
Highlands, Scotland is full of friendly people and inspiring scenery.
One way to further reduce your carbon footprint is to holiday at B&Bs,
hotels and self-catering accommodations that serve and produce local,
organic ingredients and produce. In 2005, sales of organic food grew by
30% showing that its popularity is ever increasing; one of the main reasons
for this is taste. Organic fruit and vegetables tend to grow more slowly
and have lower water content, which is one suggestion for the enhanced
flavours many people experience. It is also known that organic food
contains higher levels of vitamin C and essential minerals such as calcium,
magnesium, iron and chromium, as well as cancer-fighting antioxidants.
Eating organic food is an excellent way to improve your overall health.
residential street, Gumfreston Hotel, is a
small, family-run bed and breakfast offering
9 en-suite bedrooms, all non-smoking, with
tea/coffee facilities, digital colour television,
radio, hairdryers, towels, fine bed linen and
central heating.
We also cater for vegetarians and use fresh
local produce wherever possible.
Our aim is to provide a friendly and relaxed
atmosphere to ensure your stay is a happy
and memorable one.
Having increased in popularity over the last three years, it’s
not hard to see the attraction of a ‘stay-cation’; a break in good
ol’ Blighty this summer starts off better than a break abroad –
there’s no queuing at the airport for starters. As Reflect feel a
British break is as close to a stress-free family holiday as you can
get, we’ve got five top tips to help you make the most of your
annual getaway if you’ve not yet been away this summer…
1. Get Your Cash Sorted – just because you’re staying in Britain,
doesn’t mean you shouldn’t set a budget for your holiday
spending. By setting a budget, you’ll ensure you don’t spend
too much therefore allowing you to enjoy a guilt-free break.
2. Re-create Your Childhood Holidays – take a trip back in
time with your own children and visit some of the holiday spots
you enjoyed as a child. It’s not only a great way to share happy
memories with your children and partner, but it’s also a great
way to make some new memories.
3. Free Fun – especially helpful if you’re on a tight budget,
finding places to visit and things to do that don’t cost money
allow you to have a fun-filled day without breaking the bank.
4. Capture The Moment – just because you’ve not gone
abroad, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t capture each magical
moments you enjoy whilst on a British break. Take loads of
photos whilst on your holiday and get into the holiday mood
once again when you return home by making a photo album or
scrapbook.
5. Leave Work At Work – just because you’re not leaving the
country doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy your holiday as you
would if you were unreachable. Don’t tell colleagues where
you’re holidaying and make a point of telling everyone that
you’re going away and cannot be reached.
If you’re planning to enjoy the trip of a lifetime, why not
consider a safari holiday; seeing magnificent and majestic
wildlife in its natural habitat gets us excited and reaching for the
travel brochure. If you want something extra special, why not
book with an independent agent who knows the area, so you
can travel the path less travelled and experience a true safari.
Superb
Shooting
Safaris
Many of us dream of a safari holiday
where we can see magnificent and
majestic wildlife in its natural habitat. If
you’re looking for a safari holiday that
offers a little more, Reflect would like to
recommend Brown’s Lock Stock and Barrel,
owned by John Brown.
John has recently branched out from
simply being the largest supplier of
hunting rifles in south Yorkshire to offer
fantastic shooting safari trips to South
Africa, Namibia and Mozambique, as John
explained: “For my 50th birthday I decided
to treat myself with a trip to South Africa
on a hunting safari. I got talking to Issac,
the lead hunter, and, with my friend Andy
Crosbee, we decided to go into business
together; Andy and I arrange the hunting
safaris and escort groups to South Africa
and Isaac provides the groups with his
knowledge and expertise. Our aim is to
keep the holiday as cheap as possible for the
customer whilst providing an exceptional
service. We arrange everything from
accomodation to hunting licences; all the
customer has to do is get to Johannesburg
Airport, which actually doesn’t cost that
much if you fly via Europe – Andy and I went
a couple of weeks ago for less than £400
each by flying from Manchester to Paris then
from Paris to Johannesburg. The airline will
charge a small fee for carrying any firearms
and as soon as you arrive in South Africa,
you’re treated like a king.”
To reward John for offering such a
unique yet special holiday opportunity,
Reflect have awarded him a Certificate of
Recognition for Experience of a Lifetime.
John said: “Thank you so much Reflect, this
award is a great boost to a new venture. I
hope it encourages more people to sample
our amazing safaris.”
Brown’s Lock Stock and Barrel, which has
up to 400 guns in stock, is open Tuesday
to Friday from 10:30am until 7pm and on
Saturdays from 9:30am until 5pm.
If you love the great outdoors, you’ll love Alderney; the
island’s landscape is shaped by sheer cliffs, which are broken
up by golden stretches of sandy beaches, and the different
terrains provide a great deal of wonder and ample photo
opportunities. The fauna and flora is rich here, and whilst
many of the trees were cut down in the 17th Century in
order to fuel the island’s lighthouses, some interesting
species remain, including the cabbage tree.
Wildlife can be found in abundance on this charming
Channel Island, with puffins and gannets drawing in keen
birdwatchers. Over the years, Alderney has become famous
for being home to large numbers of seabirds; around 7,000
pairs of gannets are said to nest here, which is about 2% of
the world’s population, and Dartford warblers, guillemots
and peregrines can also be seen. The most interesting of
Alderney’s creatures however, is its native blonde hedgehog;
this variety of the European hedgehog, with its creamcoloured
spines, appeared as the result of a rare recessive
gene and about a thousand are now thought to live on the
island. Often mistaken for being albinos, these hedgehogs
are rumoured to have arrived on Alderney in a Harrods
shopping bag, but the truth about their appearance remains
unknown.
As Alderney is such a small island, getting around on foot is
pretty easy and in fact, is the preferred mode of transport for
many islanders – with such glorious scenery to enjoy, who
can blame them. The island features many charming paths
and trails, which guide visitors around the cliffs, beaches
and green fields, as well as through its towns and villages,
and are a pleasure to explore. Alternatively, you can head
out with the Alderney Wildlife Trust, who organise inspiring
guided walks around the islands throughout the year.
Over the centuries, navigating Alderney’s rocky coast and
fierce tidal ranges has proved to be tricky for many vessels,
and the waters surrounding the most northern of the
Channel Islands have become a graveyard for numerous
passing ships. The Elizabethan Wreck, which is believed
to have sank off the coast of Alderney in 1592, is the only
English warship wreck of its age ever discovered, making
its find in the 70s a major event for the island. Nowadays,
you can learn more about the ship and see some of the
fascinating artefacts that have been salvaged from the
wreck at the Alderney Museum.
For those who want a more relaxing way of soaking up the
island’s sites, a ride on the Channel Island’s only railway is
perfect. Constructed and opened by the British government
in the 1840s, Alderney Railway is one of our nation’s oldest
and offers just as much charm as it ever did. Hop aboard,
rest your feet and gaze in amazement as Alderney’s amazing
scenic views unfold.
Alderney’s location in the English Channel – just eight
miles from France – means it enjoys a milder climate than
the Reflect region, making it a great holiday destination
all year round. With links by air and sea, visiting Alderney
has never been easier. Aurigny Air Services offer direct
flights to the island from Southampton and Guernsey,
whilst Brittany Ferries run from Portsmouth to Cherbourg,
with a connection to Alderney sailing from Dielette (near
Cherbourg) direct to Alderney.
New Era Academy 25
Scoop Certificate Of
Recognition
Boasting a vast and varied syllabus of graded examinations, New Era
Academy is one of the UK’s top examining body for the performing
arts. With an emphasis on treating each learner as an individual and the
joy of learning itself, the New Era Academy syllabus delivers an exciting
educational experience.
Established in 1941, New Era Academy has long been a wellknown
name in the world of theatre. However, it’s thanks to
the hard work and dedication of actor and Chief Executive,
Derren Nesbitt, and Examination Director, Miranda Nesbitt,
that the organisation has taken on a new lease of life for the
21st Century.
Reflect are so impressed with Derren’s hard work,
impressive CV and dedication to New Era Academy that
we’ve selected him for our Certificate of Recognition
for Lifetime Achievement. This prestigious accolade has
been awarded alongside the Certificate of Recognition
for Specialist Performing Arts in Education that
Reflect Editor, Elaine Ellis, previously awarded to the
examining body.
Elaine says: “New Era Academy is a truly inspiring examining body;
the priority within the syllabus for each performing arts discipline
lies with making learning an interesting and rewarding experience,
rather simply on exam results. The ethos is being maintained
under Derren and Miranda’s influence and it is clear to see that
they have put all of their passion for the performing arts, as well
as their wealth of experience, into making New Era Academy a
cut above the rest.”
Derren, who has 40 films to his name, is revelling in his new
role at New Era Academy and he clearly wears his passion
and enthusiasm for acting and performing on his sleeve.
Eager to pass on his skills and expertise to a new generation,
Derren, Miranda and the Board of Directors are thrilled to
be able to help like-minded individuals realise their dreams.
Derren says: “We treat every learner as an individual and this is
the ethos that we live by. We believe strongly that every learner
who goes into an audition should come out the other side feeling
pleased and proud of what it is they have just achieved, and
having enjoyed the experience. As an examining body, New Era
Academy is not solely focused on pass rates and targets, as we
believe it is more important for student to focus on their own
personal learning curve and their own achievements.”
Thanks to Derren and Miranda, New Era Academy has
undergone a huge transformation and become a big name
on the international stage. Derren says: “We’ve been on a
very exciting journey over the last four years, which began by
introducing James Bond legend, Sir Roger Moore, and tough guy
actor, Ray Winstone, as patrons of the Academy. I’m also proud to
announce that Ray Cooney OBE, the greatest theatrical writer of
the 20th Century and a long-time friend, has also come onboard
as a patron; he’s a genius and is so enthusiastic about our
approach to drama awards and the fact that New Era Academy
is succeeding so well.”
New Era Academy pride themselves on the modern outlook
which focuses on the experience of learning itself and the
life skills gained from this experience, rather than creating
a network of exam factories. The personalised delivery of
courses and examinations are what really make New Era
Academy stand out among other exam bodies and the
feedback received from the students themselves highlights
that this is what they want from their chosen subject.
There are a wealth of inspiring disciplines on offer at
New Era Academy, including: acting, choral speaking,
communication, devised drama, English as a second language,
interview technique, mime, musical theatre, public speaking,
reading, recital, Shakespeare, solo verse speaking, speech and
drama, and spoken English.
Having spent his entire life in the business, Derren’s
enthusiasm for acting and performing shines through, and his
contribution to New Era Academy, which is fully accredited
by Ofqual – the Office of Qualifications and Examinations
Regulation – has made a huge difference for those
students who want to go on to bigger and brighter things.
Qualifications gained are also now included in the UCAS
tariff system, so whether a student dreams of a life in the
limelight or aspires to be a lawyer, a certificate from New
Era Academy can equip them with the confidence and skills
they need to succeed.
26 Smallholding Guide
Get Your Slice Of
Rural Heaven
Introducing Chase
End Alpacas…
Domesticated thousands of years ago in
the mountains of South America, alpacas
have become a common sight in paddocks
across the UK. Farmed for their fleece,
alpacas are flock animals that make a great
addition to any smallholding.
Situated in Orsett Heath, Essex, Chase End Alpacas
consists of 41 (number 42 is on the way) Huacaya
alpacas in a mixture of colours, including white, fawn,
brown, grey and a few mixed colours. Owners Joe
and Ann Hempsey fell in love with these curious
creatures about seven years ago after buying four
pregnant females. Ann said: “We started small and
gradually added to our herd and it now consists of five
working stud males, three wethers, with more to be
added, five cria, with one more due soon, and lots of
females, including yearlings and mums. We’re happy to
consider selling any of herd and we’re happy to welcome
visitors to the farm, we just ask that you call and make an
appointment beforehand.”
As well as providing high quality breeding stock
to add to your herd, Chase End Alpacas also offer
stud and livery services, as Ann explained: “We have
five working stud males, four of whom have produced
excellent offspring in the past; our other boy hasn’t had
the opportunity to prove himself yet! As well as studs, we
also provide a livery service; this is ideal for anyone who
wants to buy alpacas but doesn’t yet have the land.” For
further information on either, please call Joe or Ann
on 01375 399711.
Ann added: “Anyone who buys alpacas from us is always
guaranteed a good variety of high quality alpacas to
choose from, as well as help, advice and back up for as
long as they need it. Joe and I remember what it was like
when we first started out, so we like to help anyone that
requires our help; we’re always at the end of a phone.”
An increasing number of people are quitting
the rat race and choosing to live a simpler
existence in the country, away from the
frustrating traffic jams and bustling crowds
often experienced in the city. Life in the
beautiful English countryside provides us
with a more relaxing and tranquil way of life,
without the city worries of crime and noise,
as well as giving our lungs a break from the
constant smog of pollution.
Whether you buy a delightful stone cottage in the heart
of a small village or a secluded farmhouse away from
everything, life in the country offers a peaceful, relaxed
and laid-back lifestyle.
Part of this new lifestyle which many of us crave includes
taking control over what you feed your family and with a
huge back garden, or even a paddock to make the most
of, a move to the country is the perfect opportunity to
start a smallholding.
The easiest way to begin, is by growing your own
vegetables; from tomatoes and potatoes to courgettes
and sweetcorn, and even a herb garden, the possibilities
for growing your own food are endless.
If you’d like to add some animals, one of the most
rewarding are chickens. Buy birds from a reputable
breeder, buy good quality housing to protect your birds
against dangers, such as foxes, and finally, ensure you
feed them a balanced diet and you’ll be rewarded with
fresh eggs every morning and happy, thriving birds.
You could go one step further by investing in the array
of different livestock that are suitable for smallholdings...
The alpaca (Vicugna pacos) is a domesticated species,
originally from South America, developed from the wild
vicuña. They resemble a sheep in appearance, but are
larger and have a long erect neck. Traditionally, alpacas
were kept in herds that grazed on the level heights of
the Andes of Ecuador, southern Peru, northern Bolivia,
and northern Chile throughout the year. Alpacas have
been domesticated for thousands of years and are now
growing in popularity in this country, as people seek
their slice of rural heaven.
Although alpacas were traditionally farmed for their
meat in their native lands, this isn’t the case in this
country. Alpaca farms across the UK farm the animal
for its fibre. Alpaca fibre is warmer and lighter in
weight than sheep’s wool. It is soft and luxurious,
however, as with all fleece-producing animals, quality
varies from animal to animal. The fibre comes in more
than 22 natural colours and an annual shearing will
produce between 1-6lb (0.8kg-2.8kg) of very fine fibre,
depending on the individual animal – top stud males
can reach annual shear weights of 6kg.
Pigs are another excellent choice for smallholders as
they are not at risk from predators, as chickens are, and
they can easily be penned. As porkers can be ready for
the butcher at just six-months-old, you’ll be enjoying
sizzling bacon and succulent joints of pork before you
know it. There are many different breeds you can choose
to rear, including the Berkshire, British Saddleback,
Gloucestershire Old Spots and the Mangalitza.
Another great option for maintaining any spare land
you have is by keeping sheep. Sheep are not only a
great way to avoid mowing a large area of grass, they’re
also a great way to provide an extra income for your
family. Sheep produce good quality wool, which can
be sold; sheep are known to be prolific milk and cheese
producers and they can be sold for their meat. If you’ve
never owned sheep before, the Gotland breed is ideal
as they not only produce beautiful fleeces (ideal for
spinning or felting) but they’re also easy to lamb (lambs
grow fast and are active from birth) and have a hardy
and adaptive nature.
The wide open spaces, combined with the lack of traffic and
the chance to ‘fend for yourself’, allow your family to reap
the numerous benefits of country life.
Enjoying The Good Life At
Over Hall Farm
The concept of growing and rearing your own
food isn’t a new one, but with food prices steadily
increasing and organic food in particular amongst
the most expensive, it’s time to enjoy a slice of the
good life.
One family who have fully embraced this ethos
are the Rigbys, whose smallholding has steadily
transformed itself into farm over the last 40 years,
as owner, Jean, explains: “We moved into Over
Hall in the early 1970s and it all just grew from
there. We started with a few chickens, so that we
could take advantage of their eggs, and then the
geese, who make excellent burglar alarms, and
ducks arrived. The latter consist of various breeds,
including Indian runners and Aylesbury ducks.”
After getting to grips with caring for their foul, the
family introduced sheep to Over Hall Farm, in
particular the rare breed Jacobs, a small piebald
type, and the North Ronaldsay, who originate from
the northernmost Orkney Isle of the same name.
Both breeds produce meat with distinct flavour,
whilst the former’s woolly coat has also proved to
be of great use, as Jean explains: “I didn’t want the
wool to go to waste, so I kept it and sent it off to be
spun – it’s great for knitting with.”
Next came the Saddleback and Berkshire pigs,
who the family describe as easy to care for, and
beautiful peacocks, before the latest additions – a
Highland fold – arrived just last year. The cattle
have proved to be a major talking point in the
Rigbys’ quiet village of Bretherton, near Preston in
Lancashire, and will be bred for both their meat and
hides.
Jean says: “We rear the cows, sheep and pigs for
their meat, which is really appreciated locally; it’s all
organic and the animals are very well reared. Our
beef, lamb and pork has proved to be quite popular
and we have a very friendly local butcher who does
our sausages for us, whilst the village pub will be
using one of our pigs for their hog roast in August
and occasionally have joints from us too.”
For the Rigby family, their slice of the good life just
keeps on growing, Jean adds: “We have quite a
wide variety of animals here and whilst we enjoy
consuming the produce we make, it’s an interesting
hobby more than anything – I’m a country woman
born and bred.”
28 Responsible Breeding
Precious
Labrador Rescue
Awarded Certificate
of Recognition
Pets
Unfortunately, our domestic pets are the
latest victims of the current economic
instability following the 2008 recession. The
Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty
to Animals (RSPCA) rescued and collected
130,033 animals and found new homes for
83,268 animals in 2010.
So, before you take the financial and
emotional plunge of buying a pet, Reflect
would like to suggest doing your homework.
Whatever type of animal you would like to
share your home with you need to consider
how much it will cost you each month for
food, bedding and insurance, so that you will
be better prepared and well aware of how
much a pet is going to cost in the long run.
Choosing a new pet based on how much
you can afford to spend each month is better
than buying an animal you may be forced
to give up.
Your choice of pet should also reflect how
much time and care you can give. Cats
make ideal pets for those who want a more
independent companion, as they require no
walking or grooming, whilst dogs are one
of the most time consuming pets. Taking
on the responsibility of a dog is a huge
commitment, so it’s important you know
how long they are expected to live for. The
average life expectancy for dogs, according
to the British Veterinary Association’s
publication The Veterinary Record, is 11
years. However, the breed of the dog and
the care it receives can obviously affect its
life span.
It can be difficult to know where to look for
the perfect pet, but buying from a reputable
breeder can ensure your animal will be
healthier. Good breeders are dedicated to
producing the finest litters and select only
the best and most suitable parents, ensuring
the offspring is also the best in terms of
health and temperament. Another plus of
buying from a reputable breeder is that they
can offer help and assistance once you’ve
purchased your new pooch.
In the last three years, donations to charity
have fallen dramatically, leaving the smaller
charities, who rely solely on kind donations
to carry out their essential work, struggling to
stay afloat.
Reflect would like to encourage our readers to
make a donation to the Labrador Rescue South
East & Central, winners of our Certificate
of Recognition for Canine Welfare 2011. The
Labrador Rescue was established in 1996 (from
a collaboration of numerous smaller rescue and
re-homing groups) with the sole aim of caring
for and re-homing pure bred and first cross
Labrador Retrievers.
On hearing the news of the charity’s Certificate
of Recognition Secretary, Margaret Stocks,
said: “We’re absolutely delighted to receive this
recognition from Reflect; the welfare of the dogs
in our care is always our priority so it’s great to
have recognition for that. This is a great reward
for everyone involved, especially all our volunteers
who dedicate their time and energy so graciously
for free. Everything we do is a team effort so this
award is for the entire team!”
The Labrador Rescue South East & Central
were nominated for our award by Sales
Executive, Rochelle Taylor-Smith, who said: “The
economic troubles of the past three years have
hit smaller charities hard – the Labrador Rescue
must raise in excess of £100,000 each year to
continue to care for these wonderful dogs, so I hope
this award encourages Reflect readers to dig deep
and make a donation, big or small. The veterinary
care required to get these dogs happy and healthy
again is vital and not cheap; it’s a real drain on the
charity’s resources so I urge people to give what
they can.”
Labrador Rescue South East & Central will be
having a Dog’s Party in September at the Dogs
Trust Rehoming Centre in Harefield, Middlesex
in order to raise vital funds. For more
information, call Margaret on 01237 477993.
Superb
Schnauzers
Owning a pet brings with it huge responsibilities. One
breeder who always puts the welfare of her puppies
first is Jenny Harrison-Smith, who breeds under the
prefix Nenevale. Brought up in a family of animal lovers,
Jenny has over 40 years’ experience breeding an array
of different dogs. For the last 12 years she’s happily bred
black and silver, and white Miniature Schnauzers.
Jenny told Reflect:
“Growing up, I loved
nature; I was at my
happiest being involved
in my ponies, walking
hound puppies for
the Cambridgeshire
Harriers, hunting and
shooting, working
with gundogs and
terriers and anything
that involved Mother
Nature.
“As the years rolled
on, I lost my last Jack
Russell Terrier and I
made the decision to
try and buy a Miniature Schnauzer, which I was assured would
be very family friendly, and so in 1972, I collected Charlie
from Donald Becker of the acclaimed Dondeau kennels, who
imported the first Giants from Riesengardens in Sweden
into the UK. Over the years, I have been privileged to have
owned or bred every colour in all three sizes of the Schnauzer
breeds, which includes 32 Giant champions, and two pepper
and salt Schnauzer champions. Among the 30-plus imports,
and all these years later, I am now breeding black and silver
Miniatures from only black and silver lines.
“My latest and last challenge is the white Miniature Schnauzer,
which I first saw at the World Show in Dortmund in 1991. I
have finally found my foundation stock, which are now settled
with me, so the future is full of plans!”
Jenny has a couple of litters due in the autumn, which will
be ready for their new homes fromNovember. Nenevale
Miniature Schnauzer puppies are all reared indoors with
plenty of love and fuss. Jenny explained: “All my puppies are
micro-chipped, Kennel Club Registered and hold current eye
certificates, with puppies screened at six weeks, leaving with
health certificates, their first vaccinations and a handbook, as
well as my support for the life of the puppy, and beyond. I’ve
been doing this a long time and have kept in touch with a large
number of families who have bought puppies from me – it’s
like a huge extended family.”
As well as breeding quality puppies, Jenny also judges
competitions all over the world and has done for many
years. She judged the Miniature Schnauzer entries at
Crufts 2010 and
is off to Australia
in September
to judge at
the Schnauzer
Club of Victoria
Championship
Show.
Finally Jenny added: “I’m very conscious to encourage as many
people to do their homework before welcoming any breed of
dog into their family. I tend to meet people two or three times
before they take a puppy away from me to become part of
their family. Many dog owners don’t do their research and
that’s when things can go wrong. It’s important to know you
can care for your dog adequately and that they’ll fit in with
your family.”
30 Hobbies For Everyone
Pastimes To
Please All
Have you ever taken the time to really think about
how you spend your leisure time According to
statistics, the average Brit watches more than 30
hours of television per week – just imagine all the
other, more productive, activities you could be doing
with that free time.
We’re fast becoming a nation of couch potatoes; in fact figures released earlier
this year revealed that Brits are now spending around 30 hours a week in front of
the box. The poll, conducted by ICM earlier this year, also discovered that 72% of
people eat at least one meal a day in front of the TV. If these shocking statistics
sound familiar to you then why not pledge to make the most of your free time by
taking up a new hobby. From gardening to painting, reading to crafts, hobbies
come in all shapes and sizes, and there are a wealth of pastimes that are much
more rewarding than a couch potato lifestyle.
When was the last time you tried something new According to research
conducted by The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills last year, more
than a third of Brits hadn’t tried a new hobby or learnt a new activity in the
previous 12 months. This is despite the fact that those surveyed were enthusiastic
about learning a new skill, believing that it would give them a confidence boost.
If this sounds like you then why not vow to ditch the box and tackle a new hobby,
learn a new skill or experience something a little more rewarding than the TV has
to offer.
For those with a passion for the water, and boats in particular, it would be a
dream come true to own a vessel of your own. However, without a cash windfall
the dream of owning such a luxury item is unlikely, so why not transform your
love of boats into a model making hobby. With a wealth of kits and materials
available in every size and style imaginable, you can tackle a project of any size
and create anything from tugs or fishing boats to warships and aircraft carriers,
and decorate and accessorise them however you please. Alternatively, you could
embrace your love of the seas by devouring nautical-themed books and discover
exciting adventures, delve into the history of sailing or learn more about the
technical aspects of ships.
If you’ve got a creative streak and want to put it to good use, why not learn how
to sew, knit or crochet. As a result of these tough financial times we’re now saving
our cash, rather than buying the latest must-haves, making these hobbies vital
skills for those who want to save money but still have something new to wear
come the weekend.
Creative Learning At The Knit Studio
Situated in the heart of Newcastle upon
Tyne, The Knit Studio opened its doors
in August 2010, to offer an exciting
programme of workshops, as well as an
extensive range of yarns, fabrics, books
and accessories. Lovingly run and owned
by keen knitter Anne Makepeace, The
Knit Studio is the winner of a Reflect
Certificate of Recognition for
Creative Learning.
Reflect Editor, Elaine Ellis nominated
The Knit Studio for our Certificate of
Recognition. She says: “The Knit Studio is a
true craft gem. Anne not only offers excellent
workshops in a variety of different crafts, she
also stocks an impressive array of specialist and
unusual yarns, as well as yarns from rare breed
sheep, including Blue-Faced Leicester, Steel Grey
Suffolk, Black Welsh and Hebridean. The Knit
Studio is truly unique and not your average
wool shop, which is why I’m happy to award our
Certificate of Recognition for Creative Learning
to The Knit Studio. I hope Anne continues to
share her love of crafts with others for many
more years.”
Anne Makepeace
said: “Thank you
so much for this
recognition Reflect.
It’s such a nice
reward for all the
hard work I’ve put
into The Knit Studio
since discovering the
Blackfriars Friary
(where The Knit
Studio is based) 18
months ago. The Blackfriars Friary has 700
years of craft history; after the Reformation,
it was used by various local craftsmen and
Guildsmen, so it feels right that I’m continuing
with this 700-year-old crafts tradition.”
The Knit Studio’s next workshop, ‘Working
with Colour’, with Emma King, a popular
Rowan Designer and Author, and will be
held on September 5th. For more info or
to book a place, call 07540 277764. The
Knit Studio hosts a popular Knitting Group
and recently launched the first city centre
Spinning Group – SpiniCity.
It’s easy to create a brand new item for your wardrobe, you just need to know the
basics. Borrow a book on sewing from the local library, browse the Internet for
advice on learning how to knit and crochet or head to your local independent
craft shop for all you need to know about all of these skills. As well as being
packed full of pretty ribbons, vibrant threads and cute buttons, many of these
shops are now offering courses for those of us who don’t know our tension from
our topstitch.
It’s A Sailor’s Life
Brown, Son & Ferguson Ltd
Specialising in a range of fascinating nautical publications
and useful ship stationery, Brown, Son & Ferguson Ltd stock
everything a keen sailor could possibly need. Covering the
technical aspects of sailing, model building and storybooks,
the comprehensive range of products cater for all interests
connected to the world’s waters.
Brown, Son & Ferguson is built on a long and
prestigious history, and has been a family-run
business since its inception in 1850 – a major
achievement in the modern world of media
conglomerates. Established by James Brown
and his son, Robert, it is a business based on
quality products, the Glasgow-based company
are immensely proud of their traditional
standards and their independence.
Director, Richard Brown, says: “We pride
ourselves on being a well-established, family-run
business and our excellent range of nauticalthemed
publications. Our selection of technical
books, model making publications, storybooks
and stationery is comprehensive and really covers
a gap in the market; we’re proud of our niche
status and many of our products are unique to
us.”
The company initially began as a retail
stationery outlet, but it was the location
of their very first shop that influenced the
decision to focus on products with a nautical
theme. In 1850, Brown, Son & Ferguson
was situated on the south side of the River
Clyde, close to where the sailing ships of the
time would dock, and it was their regular
encounters with sailors that inspired the
company to stock nautical-based publications.
Whilst at the time John William Norie’s
‘Epitome of Navigation’ was one of the few
publications available, it wasn’t long before a
new era of nautical publishing dawned.
From the start, Brown, Son & Ferguson were
ahead of the game, supplying the very first
issue of Brown’s Nautical Almanac in 1876 –
a publication compiled and published by the
company itself. To this day, the publication is
published annually and remains a popular and
valuable guide. Still fondly referred to as ‘The
Sailor’s Bible’ and well-known in every port
around the world, the Almanac is revised and
updated each year and features articles on all
of the technical aspects of sailing.
Building upon their success, the company
chose 1921 to expand their product range by
introducing publications that covered every
aspect of sea life and nautical knowledge.
However, Brown, Son & Ferguson’s publishing
activities didn’t end there; when the Boy
Scout and Girl Guide movements were
established, the company were keen to
associate themselves with the groups and
also expanded into the fields of Scottish
literature and plays.
Nautical Magazine is the company’s longest
running publication and first became available
in March 1832. Over the last 179 years, the
publication has had only eight editors, the
first being Captain AB Becher, who later
became an Admiral, and the latest being
Richard Brown, who remains at the helm.
Over almost two centuries of publication,
many famous names have featured within its
pages, including those who have furthered
nautical knowledge and led nautical thought
in all maritime countries. A well-known
phrase connected with seafarers is ‘leave the
sea and buy a farm’, the attraction of this
can be shown by the company’s subscription
list having now, and in the past, contained
subscribers from as far flung places as the
Arctic region of Canada to the centre of
Africa, Asia and the Pacific’s.
Brown, Son & Ferguson’s publications list
remains as fascinating and complete as it
ever was and includes: Nautical Magazine,
Manual of Oil Tanker Operations and Sailing
Ship Rigs and Rigging. The book list is just as
interesting, with subjects covering everything
from navigation and seamanship to ship
construction, signalling to dredging.
All of the company’s products can be ordered
by phone, fax or online and they always aim
to dispatch items within 24 hours.
Simply The Best!
Can you believe how fast the year is going – we’re
into August already! Reflect have come across some
great companies this year, some of which may be very
familiar to you, others of which will be brand new. We
understand how hard it can be to find well-established
companies that offer a high level of service that’s
tailored to your personal needs, which is why we strive
to bring you the best of the best each and every week
from across the UK.
Today, there are thousands of companies who promise the world and, with the
Internet making it easy for less discerning companies to appear legitimate, searching
for a good company can be a minefield. This minefield has been made significantly
worse thanks to the recession and following economic instability, as it’s now harder
than ever to know who to trust with your money. As so many companies, both
small, independent businesses and multi-national corporations, have gone into
administration in the last three years, many of us are wary about how we spend our
cash.
The companies within this feature offer their customers the whole package: high
quality products and competitive prices, as well as an excellent and personal service.
We’ve searched high and low, across the length and breadth of the UK to bring you
these companies.
accountancy solutions and a wealth of
advice, MGM Accountancy pride themselves
on delivering a truly personalised service to
all of their clients. In fact, over the last four
years the London-based, ACCA qualified firm
have established an outstanding reputation for
their expertise and experience, as well as their
warm and friendly nature.
Aiming to break the stuffy stereotype of
accountants and stand out from the crowd, the
team at MGM work hard to make each and every
client feel at home when visiting their HQ, which
is situated near to the vibrancy and creativity of
Covent Garden.
Here at Reflect, we like to highlight businesses
that we believe offer something unique, which
is why the accountancy firm were our number
one choice for our Certificate of Recognition for
Specialist Accountancy Services.
Reflect Sales Executive, Rochelle Taylor-Smith,
nominated MGM Accountancy for the award,
she says: “MGM Accountancy are armed with a
wealth of experience and expert knowledge,
but instead of overwhelming you with technical
jargon, Director, Mark Livermore, and the team
deliver all of the information you need to know
in layman’s terms and will guide you every step
of the way. Alongside their specialist services,
the firm stands out from the crowd due to their
refreshing attitude and enthusiasm; at MGM you
will never be treated like a name on the books
and I believe this really makes a difference to
those who perhaps feel intimidate by those
essential visits to the accountant.”
Standing out from the crowd is important to MGM
Accountancy, which is why the focus is on breaking
down the stereotype of accountancy, Mark adds:
“We pride ourselves on our customer service
and the good relationships we establish with
our clients. We recognise that many people feel
intimidated by accountancy firms and associate
negative connotations with
visiting their accountant,
but that’s something we
strive to overcome. We’re
a very laid back office and
very approachable; it’s
casual, but we never take
a casual approach to our
work and it is this attitude
which ensures we develop
a sense of relationship
with all our clients.”
Reflect Editor, Elaine Ellis, says: “Each fortnight, everyone at Reflect strives to bring
excellent companies to the attention of our readers, no matter what feature we’re
working on. We believe it is important to highlight the companies in and around
Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, as well as further afield, that not only offer
excellent value for money, but also excellent customer service and high quality
goods/services. We pride ourselves on hunting out the best companies that cater to
our readership and work exceptionally hard to give the customer exactly what they
want.”
As well as promoting excellent companies to our readers, here at Reflect we like to
reward hard word, dedication, good quality, value for money and a personal service,
which is why each issue we hand out a number of Certificates of Recognition.
These Certificates aren’t handed out willy-nilly; they’re only awarded to the best
companies, who excel in their chosen field and treat their customers with respect
and courtesy.
Although these companies are offering different things, the factors that lead to
success remain the same, good customer service, reliability and professionalism
are three of the most important factors for keeping customers happy – and happy
customers means more recommendations and more success!
Many companies across the country have suffered the effects of the recession,
but it’s our local businesses that have been hit hardest. Without the financial
backup of a parent company, with a chain of businesses, they are finding it tough
to keep afloat. However, there are ways that you can help your local, independent
businesses survive. By choosing to shop or employ the services of local companies,
you can help them to flourish. You may also find that choosing local is to your
benefit, as you are treated to a more personal service.
In today’s cutthroat and highly competitive market, there are thousands of
companies who promise the world but fail to deliver – the companies on these
pages endeavour to provide only the highest standards of service, as well as great
value for money. Rest assured, the individuals within this feature will endeavour
to provide only the highest standards of service, the very best products, and good
value for money, which is why we’re 100% happy to recommend them to you…
Our lives seem
to be a lot more
stressful and
hectic these days.
Many of us have
money worries,
work worries and
personal issues
that can easily
overwhelm us.
A Happy Hobby From
Lynx Model Works
We all need a hobby to take our minds off work and
relax our bodies. A study from the Mayo Clinic in
Minnesota suggests that engaging in a hobby, like knitting,
making a patchwork quilt, or even building a steam engine
can delay the onset of dementia. In the study, nearly
200 people aged 70 – 89 with mild memory problems
were compared to a group who had no impairment.
Researchers asked the volunteers about their daily
activities within the past year, and how mentally active
they had been from 50 – 65-years-old; those who had
been busy reading or engaging in craft hobbies had a 40%
reduced risk of memory impairment.
Based in the county of Lincolnshire, Lynx Model Works
is a thriving specialist Precision Engineering business,
specialising in Steam Engines of all kinds. Formed in 2002
by John Clarke, the recently expanded Lynx Model Works
workforce of 14 engineers produce beautiful models and
full-sized steamboat engines and their component parts,
including fully tested coal-fired boilers.
In the last six years, they have built some 45 live steam
locomotives for discerning clients, in all gauges from
gauge 1 to 10 ¼” gauge. All are coal fired, passengerhauling
replicas of famous full-sized locomotives from
the past. Real Live Steam Coal Fired locomotives are
made in any gauge/scale from 2 ½” to 10 ¼” Gauge to
individual order. Traction Engines to 4” scale, Model and
full-size Stationery and Steam Launch Engines are also
produced to order. All products built and offered by Lynx
Model Works are customer driven, as they specialise in
producing individual items to fulfil client’s wishes.
John is extremely experienced; he has over 38 years’
experience in producing live steam locomotives, traction
engines, stationary and steam launch engines. It’s this
experience combined with his knowledge and his
excellent workforce that has led Reflect to award Lynx
Model Works with a Certificate of Recognition
for Engineering Services as well as a Diamond
Certificate of Recognition earlier this year.
Lynx Model Works also assists other model engineer
hobbyists in completing their own projects, by making
parts that they may not have the time or facilities to
produce for themselves. Lynx Model Works are also
happy to repair, renovate and complete unfinished models
and assist in the reworking and build of any ‘kit’ item:
complete or incomplete.
Say Farewell the
Natural Way
At Tarn Moor Memorial Woodland
Deep within Skipton’s 200-acre Tarn
Moor Estate lies one of the country’s
few natural burial sites – a dedicated
ten acres of sprawling green scenery
boasting the appearance of open
countryside. Stunning views among
the peace and tranquillity make it a
desirable place to be and increasing
numbers of people are now choosing
the site as their final resting place.
The aim is to produce a long-term, natural
woodland, which will be maintained as
woodland rather than a cemetery, and its
open countryside feel helps to create a
place of peace, rather than one of sadness.
Recognising Tarn Moor Memorial
Woodland as a unique and special place,
Reflect have selected the Estate for a
Certificate of Recognition for Best
Kept Memorial. This is alongside the
Certificate of Recognition for Coping
with Bereavement that Reflect’s sister
publication, Aspire, awarded to Tarn Moor
in 2009.
Reflect Editor, Elaine Ellis, says: “Tarn Moor
Memorial Woodland is a very special place
and I am captivated by the natural beauty of
the site, as well as its calming atmosphere. I
believe all of these unique characteristics help
those who are bereaved find some peace
and provides a place where people can think
of fond, happy memories, rather than being
overwhelmed by sadness.”
The Memorial Ground manager, former
farmers wife Wendy Pratt comments “We
are very proud to being doing what we’re doing
here at Tarn Moor and we’re very pleased to
have all our efforts recognised. Our aim has
always been to offer a different and personal
choice, and we believe the ambiance of Tarn
Moor helps to take away the harshness of
death. We are pleased to able to encourage
people to discuss their wishes after death and
this Certificate of Recognition acknowledges all
the hard work we have done.”
Since opening in November 2002, hundreds
of people have picked their own burial
plot at Tarn Moor. There are family plots
and even pets have their own place, with
animals often buried beside their owners.
Increasing public consciousness for the
environment means that more sites like
Tarn Moor Memorial are likely to be
created.
Only those familiar with Tarn Moor would
know of its purpose as a natural burial site.
There are no grave stones dominating the
skyline, just areas of open grassland and
fenced woodland with burial sites being
recorded on both paper and by the us of
microchips.
Tranceformation Hypnotherapy
Awarded Certificate of Recognition
Do you struggle with your weight Are you looking for a permanent
solution rather than a quick-fix Tranceformation Hypnotherapy,
Loughborough offers a revolutionary weight loss system that could
help you lose weight, forever. Reflect are so impressed with this
revolutionary system, we’ve awarded Tranceformation Hypnotherapy
with a Certificate of Recognition for Weight Loss Solutions.
Using hypnotherapy, the Hypno-Band weight loss system
helps change the way you look at, think about and treat
food. Experienced hypnotherapist and Hypno-Band
licensed practitioner, Noel Colley, explained: “The Hypno-
Band weight loss system is like having a virtual operation
to fit a Gastric Band, which reduces the size of the stomach,
therefore making you eat smaller portions and feel fuller
quicker. The actual Gastric Band operation is a great way
to lose weight but it’s costly and comes with surgery risks.
However, the Hypno-Band weight loss system is a non-surgical
alternative at a fraction of the cost of actual surgery. By using
a combination of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy techniques
and hypnotherapy, I guide my patient through the process
of changing their lifestyle and eating habits so they can lose
weight and keep it off.”
The Hypno-Band weight loss system involves an initial
consultation with Noel, followed by four one-hour sessions.
Some previous patients have seen dramatic changes in
their lifestyle and eating habits after just one session, as
Noel explained: “I’ve had clients who have come to me with
destructive eating habits who have found changes after
the first session. I had one lady who was a secret eater, who
after just one session didn’t feel the need to do that anymore.
However, everyone reacts differently to the treatment, which is
why I carry out the free initial
consultation to determine if
this treatment is right for the
client and the client is right
for the treatment.”
Reflect Sales Executive,
Rochelle Taylor-Smith, recently went to Noel’s office in
Loughborough to present him with his Certificate of
Recognition for Weight Loss Solutions. She said: “Noel
was really warm and friendly and his office had a lovely
atmosphere; really relaxing and trusting. The chairs were
extremely comfy too!”
On receiving his Certificate, Noel said: “I’m chuffed! Thank
you so much Reflect; this is a great reward for all the hard
work I’ve put in over the years. I can not only help with weight
loss, but also any psychological issues. I decided to go into
hypnotherapy over any other form of counselling as it has such
instant and lasting results. It’s amazing
to see what can be achieved in a short
space of time.”
Through Tranceformation
Hypnotherapy, Noel is also able to
help with any psychological issues you may be having,
including
• Anxiety
• Depression
• Stress confidence
• Phobias
• Bad habits and how to break them
• Public speaking
• And more
Violet Bank Holiday Home Park
Scoops Certificate of Recognition
Are you one of thousands of people looking to retire
within the next five years Are you looking for an idyllic
location in which to enjoy springtime strolls, summers
on the beach and autumnal afternoons in the great
outdoors If so, Reflect would like to suggest retiring to
the Lake District, the largest of thirteen National Parks in
England and Wales.
Situated in the idyllic countryside of the less
commercialised western Lake District, Violet Bank
Holiday Home Park offers peace and tranquillity in
abundance, as well as breathtaking panoramic views of
the Lorton Valley and the majestic Buttermere Fells.
Established in 1960, Violet Bank was purchased by
John Harrold 28 years ago. He and his wife have
since transformed the Park into a slice of rural
retirement heaven. John told Reflect: “When we
bought Violet Bank, it was much smaller than it is
today. The Park is organised into three separate areas;
one area for the pine leisure lodges that is accessed
by electronic gates, and two areas for luxury holiday
caravans. Violet Bank has a unique atmosphere which
we want to protect, therefore commercial letting is not
allowed, and there is no club or bar. The whole of the
Lake District is within one hour’s drive, making Violet
Bank an ideal base from which to explore.”
With so much on offer, it’s not hard to see why
Reflect have awarded this stunning Park with
a Certificate of Recognition for Retirement
Investments. John said: “We tend to attract the over
50s, mainly because we’re such a tranquil and relaxing
site, situated in the heart of some of England’s most
breathtaking scenery. New holiday caravans can
cost as little as £24,990 or as much as £79,000 – it
all depends on what you want from a holiday home
and how much you have to spend. Our pre-owned
caravans start from £6,990. Finance facilities are
available. Our luxury lodges, which really are like
another home, cost from £98,780 which come fully
furnished, centrally heated, double glazed and have a
stunning kitchen and bathroom, as well as an en-suite
shower room. I think they’re well worth the money and
each lodge comes with 50 years tenure.”
Reflect Editor, Elaine Ellis, who nominated Violet
Bank for our Certificate of Recognition, said:
“Choosing where to retire and how to spend your
twilight years takes a lot of consideration. However,
finding somewhere as tranquil and picturesque as
Violet Bank doesn’t happen too often, which is why I
had to select this stunning park for our Certificate of
Recognition for Retirement Investments. John and
Dianna are worthy winners and I hope more people
from the Reflect region chose to buy a retirement
home, or even holiday home there.”
As well as our award, John and Dianna are very
proud of the David Bellamy Gold Shield Award for
conservation, which they have received
for the past 10 years; which they feel,
makes Violet Bank a wonderful place to
relax.
A selection of new and pre-owned holiday homes
are available at Violet Bank, including the latest
12ft wide, and up to 38ft long, models. Any new
make or model of holiday home can be ordered.
All homes are connected to mains services and are
sited on hard standing. Each home has space to
park a car thanks to generous distances between
each caravan; this also gives owners privacy and
individual views of the surrounding countryside.
The holiday homes area, which covers seven of the
nine acres at Violet Bank, is open from 1st March
until November allowing home owners to make the
most of the warmer weather from spring through
to autumn.
As well as luxury holiday homes, this four-star site
has Scandinavian pine leisure lodges, designed to
offer the ultimate get-away holiday experience.
This landscaped area of Violet Bank is accessed
by electronic gates, offering privacy, security and
a peaceful atmosphere. Each lodge has a corner
dining area and lounge with French doors opening
onto the veranda (fitted as standard). Open for 11
months of the year, each lodge also boasts doubleglazing
and domestic central heating for those
colder days and nights.
The Lake District offers an abundance of
opportunities for exploring the great British
outdoors. Nearby you will find forestry and nature
trails, climbing, salmon and trout fishing, golf,
sailing, swimming, pony trekking and limitless
fell walking. The charming town of Cockermouth,
the birthplace of William Wordsworth, is just five
minutes from Violet Bank, whilst Bassenthwaite
Lake, home of the nesting Ospreys, is just six miles
away, and the delights of Derwent Water in Keswick
is only a 20-minute drive; all this makes Violet Bank
an excellent base for exploring everything the Lake
District has to offer.
