NEWS ABOUT FR. RANJAN—Fr. Ranjan has
received a new assignment. He will join his
Franciscan brothers in Moundsville, where he will
serve as associate pastor at St. Francis Xavier Parish in
Moundsville and St. Jude Parish in Glen Dale.
Efffective June 22, 2011
NEW APPOINTMENT—Father Rey D. Landicho is
appointed associate pastor of St. John University Parish
effective June 22, 2011.
VINO ET VERITAS Update—The May 25th session at
St. Mary’s Peace Hall is entitled An Evening in France
and is a benefit dinner for the high school youth mission.
Begins at 6:30 pm. Cost: $20.00 a person. Child care is

SPECIAL MEMORIAL DAY MASS—A Mass for
those who have died in service to our country will be

PRESBYTERAL ORDINATION—On Saturday,
June 4th at 11:00 am at the Cathedral of St. Joseph
in Wheeling, Bishop Bransfield will ordain to the
priesthood Jose Manuel Escalante, who served as
a “summer seminarian” at St. Francis de Sales, and
Andrew Switzer of St. Mary Parish, Morgantown.
Andy will preside at his first Mass at St. Mary’s on
Sunday, June 5th at 11:00 am. Keep Jose Manuel
and Andy in your prayers, and give thanks for their
“Yes!” to serve the people of our diocese.

Southern WV Ecumenical Mission Trip
Planned— An Ecumenical Work Team Mission Trip
is planned for July 3rd - July 8 th . The team will be traveling
again this summer to southern, West Virginia to
work in the communities of Oceana and Kopperston in
Wyoming County.
Participation will be open to all people of faith from
the area. All participants must be at least 14 years of age
and those age 14-18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Each participant will need to be in good health and have
a recent tetanus shot. The fee for each participant will
be $90 and we encourage those wishing to participate to
petition their local congregation for assistance in
meeting the cost if necessary. This fee will help cover
transportation, food and lodging for the duration of the
trip. Those interested in coming for part of the week are
welcome and the fee will be prorated, but they must
arrange their own transportation. The group will be
working Monday July 4 th through Friday the 8 th and
returning late Friday night.
The needs of the group are as follows:
1. Participants for the cooperative work team -
skilled & unskilled labor.
2. Monetary donations to purchase materials
(Goal is $3,000 to spend on building
materials) to incorporate into the homes,
and to help pay the majority of the work
team’s expenses (Cost per participant
estimated at $250/person).
3. Prayers of the community to help support
the work team’s mission.
As in the past those participating can expect each day
to include: a daily work assignment, morning & evening
prayer devotions with song, time for recreation each
evening, and shared responsibility for food preparations
& cleanup.

sent by mail after inquiry with applications accepted
until June 24th. Donations & participant fees can be

Diaconal Ministry
“Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men,
filled with the Spirit and wisdom…” Acts 6: 3
The deacon is ordained by the local bishop for the service
of the diocesan Church. In communion with the bishop
and priests, deacons are ordained for a distinct ministry,
which is indicated by their title: they are ordained, says
the ancient tradition, repeated at Vatican II, "for service."
The word "diakonia" means to serve.
Ministry of Charity or Service
Deacons in the United States have a variety of special
ministries such as serving the aged, battered women,
abused children, the bereaved, the blind, the deaf, the
divorced, drug addicts, the dying, the handicapped, the
poor, the people in the street etc. Deacons are meeting
these people in the name of the Church and representing
the care of Christ, the servant.
Ministry of the Word
The deacon's role includes the proclamation of the
Gospel at the liturgy, preaching and catechetical
instruction. Other forms include formal teaching,
counseling, RCIA, evangelization and outreach to
alienated Catholics. Deacons are involved in marriage
preparation courses, and other sacramental preparation
programs.
Ministry of Liturgy
The deacon can solemnly administer Baptism, witness
marriages, and preside at wakes and funerals. He assists
the priest at the Eucharistic liturgy. He distributes
Communion and brings the Eucharist to the sick. He may
lead prayer services and engage in liturgical planning and
coordination.
Other Functions
In addition to the specific ministries of Charity, Word and
Liturgy, the deacons may have other functions. They may
use their talents in performing administrative duties in
diocesan or other Church related offices and agencies or
in parishes to which they are assigned.
A vital and significant responsibility of a deacon is to
"enable" others, by their example and encouragement,
especially lay people, to become effective ministers.
Deacons who have secular jobs also bear witness to the
Gospel in the marketplace, where they meet the demands
of their work as committed Christians and ordained ministers.
They use their work as an opportunity to bring the
Gospel to bear on everyday circumstances in individual
