ZIRCONIUM Zirconium Market Avalon will produce a hydrated zirconium dioxide (ZrO 2 ) product at the hydrometallurgical plant for Thor Lake in either of two forms: zirconium oxychoride (ZrOCl 2 .8 H 2 0), also referred to as ‘ZOC’ or zirconium basic sulphate (ZBS). ZOC and ZBS are used in a wide variety of end use applications, detailed in Figure 18-13. Demand for zircon in chemicals manufacture and zirconium metal production is projected to increase to approximately 250,000 tonnes out of a total zircon demand of approximately 1.4 million tonnes by 2012. Changes in end use demand patterns in recent years are illustrated in Figure 18-14.
