BCC Research and IMCOA forecast TREO demand in 2014 to be in the range of 175,000
tonnes to 180,000 tonnes, increasing to 197,000 tonnes in 2015. This is a significant increase
from the 2008 level of approximately 125,000 tonnes. Demand fell in 2009 due to the global
economic down-turn, however, BCC forecasts (BCC, 2009) increases of 8% to 9% per year for
the period of 2009 to 2014.
The projected demand for rare earths by application in 2014 is illustrated in Figure 18-12.
