Prophets, Muses
and Inspirations
5 March – 19 April 2009 /
Christ Church Picture Gallery
For the The Sunday Times Oxford Literary Festival
a selection of drawings will be on show at Christ
Church Picture Gallery, fashioning connections
between fine art and the written word. The
group of drawings, chosen from Christ Church’s
internationally renowned Old Master collection, will
show a varied and playful selection – contrasting
drawings depicting ‘old men with books’ (prophets)
and ‘young women who might have inspired them’
(muses). Admittedly, prophets may not have been
inspired by scarcely-clad dancing muses, but in a
world of inspiration and fiction everything is possible.
The display includes works by the famous Baroque
artists Guercino and Giovanni Lanfranco.
Picture Gallery open Monday – Saturday
10.30am – 1.00pm and 2.00pm – 4.30pm
