The tour includes free admission to Oxford’s historic Botanic Gardens, where participants can spend time at their leisure at the end. This new walk for 2009 is led by local historian, author, and publisher Mark Davies. The route is flat and suitable for wheelchair users. Citing numerous authors of past and present, the enduring importance of Oxford’s waterways is explained by local historian, author, and publisher Mark Davies. The route is generally flat, but with some steps. Sunday 5 April Walking Tour - CS Lewis Tour With Alastair Lack Sunday 5 April Walking Tour - Literary Oxford With Alastair Lack 823 11am-1pm / Meet outside The Eagle and Child Pub, St Giles / £15.00 The poet John Betjeman described his tutor, C S Lewis as ‘breezy, tweedy, beer-drinking and jolly’ - a remarkable figure for many years on the Oxford landscape. Author of The Narnia Chronicles, The Screwtape Letters and much else besides, he was also a respected English don at Magdalen College. The tour begins outside The Eagle and Child pub, where Lewis and friends met regularly in a group called The Inklings to discuss their work and ends at Magdalen College, in between visiting locations such as St Mary’s Church, which were central to Lewis’ Oxford life and creativity. 824 2-4pm / Meet at the entrance to Magdalen College, High Street / £15.00 Explore Oxford Colleges in the footsteps of famous writers and poets. Blackwell Walking Tours at the Sunday Times Oxford Literary Festival The Famous Blackwell Literary Tour Tours take place: Tuesday 31st March, Wednesday 1st April, Thursday 2nd April, Friday 3rd April, Saturday 4th April and Sunday 5th April, at 1.45pm each day. Tour duration: one and a half hours. Conducted by our trained, experienced local guide, this takes in locations in Oxford where famous writers lived and worked. This illustrious list includes Samuel Johnson, Lewis Carroll, Dorothy L Sayers, Louis MacNeice, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Stephen Hawking, Joanna Trollope, Thomas Hardy, Phillip Pullman, TE Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), John Mortimer and many more. At the same time, the tour takes in the beauty of Oxford and the University with its historic buildings and monuments. The World-Renowned Blackwell ‘Inklings Tour’ Tours take place: Tuesday 31st March, Wednesday 1st April, Thursday 2nd April, Friday 3rd April, Saturday 4th April and Sunday 5th April, at 10.45am each day. Tour duration: one and a three quarter hours. This tour is a must for ‘Inklings’ enthusiasts. The ‘Inklings’ were a famous group of male writers which included JRR Tolkien, CS Lewis, Charles Williams, John Wain and many more. Our tour will take you to some of the places where they met and found their inspiration. This includes going into their old haunt, the ‘Eagle and Child’ pub.
