CALL FOR NOMINATIONS<br />

2007 Community Catalyst, Community Stewardship, Welcome to the Neighborhood,<br />

Outst<strong>and</strong>ing Partnership & Mollie Beattie Awards<br />

On November 6, 2007 we will celebrate VHCB’s 20 th anniversary with a conference in Montpelier,<br />

Towards a Shared Vision: Challenges for the Next Decade. At the conference we will present awards in the<br />

following categories: John Nutting Community Catalyst, Community Stewardship, Welcome to the<br />

Neighborhood, Outst<strong>and</strong>ing Partnership, <strong>and</strong> the Mollie Beattie Award. We invite award nominations in<br />

each category, as further described below.<br />

To nominate an individual, town, or municipality for one of these awards, please return six copies of the<br />

nomination package, consisting of the attached form, together with your nomination letter <strong>and</strong> two<br />

letters of support postmarked by October 12, 2007 to: VHCB, 149 State St., Montpelier, VT 05602.<br />

The awards will be presented in the College Hall Chapel (second floor) at Union Institute & University in<br />

Montpelier. Honorees will receive a certificate of commendation <strong>and</strong> acknowledgement on VHCB’s web<br />

page, in publications <strong>and</strong> press releases. Following the presentation, award recipients <strong>and</strong> their guests are<br />

invited to a reception at the Wood Art Gallery on the ground floor of College Hall. (Cash bar.)<br />

JOHN NUTTING COMMUNITY CATALYST AWARD<br />

Recognizes <strong>Vermont</strong>ers who have provided inspiration in their communities, providing hundreds of<br />

hours of effort <strong>and</strong> determination to improve the lives of <strong>Vermont</strong>ers. The award is presented in honor of<br />

Reverend John Nutting, an original member of the <strong>Vermont</strong> <strong>Housing</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Conservation</strong> <strong>Board</strong>, a United<br />

Church of Christ minister <strong>and</strong> long-time advocate for low-income <strong>Vermont</strong>ers. Past recipients of the<br />

award are Kirby Dunn, Beverly Major, Sister Lucille Bonvouloir, Tom Yahn <strong>and</strong> Jeff Meyers.<br />

COMMUNITY STEWARDSHIP AWARD<br />

Presented to a town or municipality in recognition of balanced efforts to revitalize a downtown or village<br />

center, conserve agricultural <strong>and</strong> recreational l<strong>and</strong>, natural areas <strong>and</strong> historic properties, <strong>and</strong> to create<br />

affordable housing. Past recipients are the towns of Newbury, Wells River, Brattleboro <strong>and</strong> Swanton.<br />

WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD AWARD<br />

Presented to a town or municipality for supporting the development of new affordable housing,<br />

demonstrating leadership in promoting diversity <strong>and</strong> in welcoming workers from all sectors of our<br />

economy. South Burlington received this award in 2000.<br />

OUTSTANDING PARTNERSHIP AWARD<br />

Recognizes individuals, municipalities <strong>and</strong>/or organizations that have combined their expertise <strong>and</strong><br />

collaborated to complete a project with multiple goals (housing <strong>and</strong> conservation; historic preservation<br />

<strong>and</strong> housing; etc.).


MOLLIE BEATTIE AWARD (1 AWARD)<br />

Recognizes a <strong>Vermont</strong>er who has provided statewide leadership in housing <strong>and</strong> conservation. The award<br />

is presented in honor of Mollie Beattie, former Commissioner of the <strong>Vermont</strong> Department of Forests,<br />

Parks <strong>and</strong> Recreation, who was appointed Director of the U.S. Fish <strong>and</strong> Wildlife Service in 1993. Mollie’s<br />

work in housing, while limited to her term as a founding VHCB board member, inspired her colleagues<br />

because of her commitment to social equity <strong>and</strong> the common principles of permanently protecting l<strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> housing. Bob Klein <strong>and</strong> Rick Carbin are past recipients of this award.
