Heat Exhausti<strong>on</strong><br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to state records, greyhounds were raced at Southland Park <strong>on</strong> days of extremely high<br />

temperatures. For example, <strong>on</strong> July 26, 2008 races were held despite a reported temperature of 100<br />

degrees. 25 Additi<strong>on</strong>ally, five greyhounds suffered from heat exhausti<strong>on</strong>/stress after rac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> hot days<br />

<strong>in</strong> May 2008, February and July 2010, and August 2011. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the <strong>in</strong>jury report for <strong>on</strong>e of these<br />

greyhounds, the temperature that day was “90+ with heat <strong>in</strong>dex of 99, and over 70% humidity.” 26<br />
