Introducti<strong>on</strong><br />

Between 2004 and 2012, GREY2K <strong>USA</strong> submitted multiple public <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> requests to the <strong>Arkansas</strong><br />

Rac<strong>in</strong>g Commissi<strong>on</strong> request<strong>in</strong>g data <strong>on</strong> greyhound <strong>in</strong>juries. In February 2012 the state released<br />

prelim<strong>in</strong>ary data, cover<strong>in</strong>g January 2008 through December 2008. For this period, we received full<br />

page reports for each <strong>in</strong>dividual <strong>in</strong>jury susta<strong>in</strong>ed by a rac<strong>in</strong>g greyhound.<br />

Two m<strong>on</strong>ths later, GREY2K <strong>USA</strong> received additi<strong>on</strong>al 2009-2012 <strong>in</strong>jury data. For the period of<br />

September 2009 through March 2012, however, we were not provided full page reports for each<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual <strong>in</strong>jury. Instead, we received summary spreadsheets. Unlike the actual <strong>in</strong>jury reports received<br />

for 2008 and part of 2009, these spreadsheets did not list the cause of the <strong>in</strong>jury or any medical<br />

treatments provided to the greyhounds. These spreadsheets also did not specify whether or not dogs<br />

were “retired from rac<strong>in</strong>g” 7 or euthanized. A third series of summary spreadsheets was obta<strong>in</strong>ed by<br />

the <strong>Arkansas</strong> Times for its June 20 article <strong>on</strong> Southland. 8 A sample of the different <strong>in</strong>jury report forms<br />

can be seen <strong>in</strong> Appendix A.<br />

Additi<strong>on</strong>ally, it is worth not<strong>in</strong>g that the number of reported <strong>in</strong>juries is far greater for the time period <strong>in</strong><br />

which actual <strong>in</strong>jury reports were provided than for the period <strong>in</strong> which <strong>on</strong>ly a spreadsheet is available.<br />

For example, the spreadsheets report no <strong>in</strong>juries for the m<strong>on</strong>th of November 2010, <strong>in</strong>stead assert<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that “no <strong>in</strong>juries seen or reported to me for the m<strong>on</strong>th.” 9 In total we received 182 <strong>in</strong>jury reports for<br />

2008, 101 reports for 2009, 58 reports for 2010, 88 reports for 2011, and 47 reports for 2012 (January<br />

through June).<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to legal counsel for the <strong>Arkansas</strong> Rac<strong>in</strong>g Commissi<strong>on</strong>, this represents “all of the <strong>in</strong>jury<br />

reports that exist <strong>in</strong> the files of the <strong>Arkansas</strong> Rac<strong>in</strong>g Commissi<strong>on</strong> or its Veter<strong>in</strong>arian.” 10<br />

From January 2008 through June 8 2012, there were a total of 476 reported rac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>juries susta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

by 463 different greyhounds at Southland <strong>Greyhound</strong> Park.<br />

The most comm<strong>on</strong>ly reported <strong>in</strong>jury was a broken leg. Specifically, 229 or 48% of all reported <strong>in</strong>juries<br />

<strong>in</strong>volved broken legs. Other comm<strong>on</strong>ly reported <strong>in</strong>juries were tears, lacerati<strong>on</strong>s, and other broken<br />

b<strong>on</strong>es.<br />

The m<strong>on</strong>th with the greatest number of reported <strong>in</strong>juries was July, with 56 <strong>in</strong>juries. The fewest number<br />

of reported <strong>in</strong>juries occurred <strong>in</strong> November and December, with 20 reported <strong>in</strong>juries each m<strong>on</strong>th.<br />

There were 13 greyhounds that were <strong>in</strong>jured multiple times from 2008 through June 8 2012 at<br />

Southland <strong>Greyhound</strong> Park. For example, Nimby Magic, a four-and-a-half-year-old dark br<strong>in</strong>dle<br />

greyhound, was <strong>in</strong>jured twice <strong>in</strong> fewer than 30 days. 11 She suffered a seizure <strong>on</strong> December 28, 2011<br />

and then broke her right leg and tore a muscle <strong>in</strong> her foot <strong>on</strong> January 16, 2012. 12 Accord<strong>in</strong>g to two<br />

different databases ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed by gamblers, Nimby Magic has not raced s<strong>in</strong>ce suffer<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>jury <strong>on</strong><br />

January 16, 2012. 13<br />

Eighteen greyhounds (4%) were reportedly “retired from rac<strong>in</strong>g” after suffer<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>jury. 14<br />

Thirty-Two <strong>Greyhound</strong>s Suffered Fatal <strong>Injuries</strong><br />

From January 2008 through June 8 2012, 32 greyhounds (7.3%) either died or were euthanized after<br />

suffer<strong>in</strong>g a rac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>jury accord<strong>in</strong>g to Southland reports. 15 For example:<br />

• A three-and-a-half-year-old<br />

black greyhound named Bow<br />

Rockabilly died after he fell <strong>in</strong>to<br />

the rail dur<strong>in</strong>g a race <strong>on</strong> February<br />

24, 2011. 16<br />

• A two-year-old br<strong>in</strong>dle<br />

greyhound named B<strong>on</strong>afide<br />

Player was euthanized after<br />

break<strong>in</strong>g her leg dur<strong>in</strong>g a race <strong>on</strong><br />

May 30, 2009. 17<br />

• A <strong>on</strong>e-and-a-half-year-old red<br />

fawn greyhound named Braska<br />

Jodi was euthanized after<br />

break<strong>in</strong>g her neck dur<strong>in</strong>g a race<br />

<strong>on</strong> February 12, 2009. 18<br />

• A three-and-a-half-year-old white and black<br />

greyhound named Kumba was euthanized after<br />

he broke his leg dur<strong>in</strong>g a race <strong>on</strong> January 14, 2009. 19<br />

Heat Exhausti<strong>on</strong><br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to state records, greyhounds were raced at Southland Park <strong>on</strong> days of extremely high<br />

temperatures. For example, <strong>on</strong> July 26, 2008 races were held despite a reported temperature of 100<br />

degrees. 25 Additi<strong>on</strong>ally, five greyhounds suffered from heat exhausti<strong>on</strong>/stress after rac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> hot days<br />

<strong>in</strong> May 2008, February and July 2010, and August 2011. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the <strong>in</strong>jury report for <strong>on</strong>e of these<br />

greyhounds, the temperature that day was “90+ with heat <strong>in</strong>dex of 99, and over 70% humidity.” 26<br />
