Emotional Resilience<br />

“<strong>Self</strong>-harm is a response to underlying emotional <strong>and</strong> psychological distress. The full<br />

extent is unknown but more than 7,000 people are tre<strong>at</strong>ed in hospital every year in<br />

Scotl<strong>and</strong> following non-f<strong>at</strong>al deliber<strong>at</strong>e self-harm.”<br />

Adults should be aware th<strong>at</strong> children or young people who self-harm or <strong>at</strong>tempt<br />

suicide may have underlying problems within the family/social environment which<br />

require to be addressed.<br />

This list is not conclusive, nor should one or more indic<strong>at</strong>or be taken, <strong>of</strong> themselves, as<br />

‘pro<strong>of</strong>’ <strong>of</strong> risk <strong>of</strong> self-harm or suicide. R<strong>at</strong>her, the factors need to be woven into a proper<br />

assessment <strong>of</strong> the child or young person’s circumstances.<br />

Please bear in mind th<strong>at</strong> many <strong>of</strong> the factors are also symptoms <strong>of</strong> normal adolescent<br />

development.<br />

2.1 Influencing Factors<br />

Influencing factors may include:<br />

❏ family problems;<br />

❏ feeling stressed;<br />

❏ having boy/girlfriend problems;<br />

❏ exams/school work;<br />

❏ self-esteem issues;<br />

❏ bereavement;<br />

❏ feeling lonely;<br />

❏ feeling guilty;<br />

❏ not having someone close to talk to;<br />

❏ bullying;<br />

❏ difficulties associ<strong>at</strong>ed with sexuality;<br />

❏ feelings <strong>of</strong> being rejected;<br />

❏ mental health issues;<br />

❏ reaction to trauma or abuse;<br />

❏ peer pressure;<br />

❏ poor body image;<br />

❏ substance misuse (drugs <strong>and</strong> alcohol).<br />
