WFMT Internships
Thank you for your interest in becoming an intern at 98.7WFMT, Chicago’s Classical Music
Experience. The program is designed to provide meaningful hands-on experience in radio
broadcasting while accommodating the needs and wishes of the participants.
General Information
1. WFMT offers internships year-round. Length of internship and hours per week are
negotiable, but we prefer that an intern be able to spend at least two days per week in the
office.
2. This is an unpaid internship. WFMT will work with schools for student interns receiving
credit, but receiving credit and/or being a student are not required.
3. Interns at WFMT are assigned an internship coordinator who will structure the internship
according to the needs of both the station and intern. Our internships are very flexible
and allow for a wide range of experiences. However, we’d prefer interns that are open to
working on a wide range of projects.
Suggested Deadlines
Applications are considered throughout the year as need arises. For best consideration,
candidates are urged to apply by the below dates. Actual start dates are flexible and will be
discussed with candidates during the interview. We make every attempt to interview and select
interns by the end of the below-listed months.
For Fall Internships (which generally begin in August or September) apply by mid-July. (Tip:
many students apply before leaving school in May/June for internships starting the following
fall.)
For Winter Internships (which generally begin in January) apply by mid-November.
For Spring (March) Internships, apply by mid-February. (Note: because school calendars vary,
there are usually fewer openings in March.)
For Summer Internships (which begin in May or June) apply by mid-April.
Requirements
Students of any major are encouraged to apply but an interest in classical music is a must. Good
written and verbal communications skills are essential, and familiarity with editing web sites and
particularly with HTML is helpful. The ability to read music is also helpful for certain
production tasks but not required.

Application Process
All interested applicants should complete the attached application in addition to submitting a
resume and cover letter. If the applicant is a student receiving credit for the internship, a
signature from the internship coordinator is required. In the cover letter, applicants should
express their qualifications, why they would like to intern at WFMT, and areas of interest at the
radio station.
Internship Description
Possible tasks include, but are not limited to: Web site content, copywriting and researching for
the web, writing/editing scripts, editing audio (for broadcast, the website or for podcasts), field
recording, archive updating, music library maintenance, assisting with on-air pledge drives, and
helping with press releases, sales and marketing. The most successful interns will be interested
in working on many different projects in different departments; however the staff at WFMT will
mold an internship to meet the applicant’s interests and desired skills. Interns are also
encouraged to shadow producers, on-air hosts and other staff.
