Paying it Forward 20 Years Later 

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of her kidney transplant, 

Barbara Hylinski with her husband Dr. Joe Hylinski of Blue Bell, 

PA generously “gifted back” a major contribution to the Family 

House by underwriting a family guest room. Barbara’s transplant 

took place 20 years ago on February 5, 1992 and they have chosen 

to underwrite guest room number 205 to commemorate this 

extraordinary date.

allowed me to live a full and exciting life. 

It is a gift you can never repay, you can only 

pay it forward. Our donation is our thanks 

and payment forward so that others can 

share in this modern day miracle.”

First Annual Celebration

On January 19, 2012, Gift of Life Family 

House honored its dedicated volunteers at 

the First Annual Family House Volunteer Appreciation Celebration. 

Volunteers had the chance to relax, eat and get to know their fellow 

volunteers, while looking back on the past 6 months at the Family House. 

The Family House also celebrated its 6 month anniversary of supporting 

and caring for transplant families. Throughout the evening there was 

laughter, great company and wonderful entertainment. 

Papa Carl, founder of Jam for Life Foundation, entertained the volunteers 

and staff with his amazing musical talent along with the talented Alexis 

Schulz and Pete Nagy. Thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers at the 

Family House! Your service is always appreciated.

Gift of Life Family House provides a “home away from home” for transplant patients and their families. But the Family 

House is so much more than a place to stay. Every effort is taken to lessen the burden, reduce stress, keep our families 

intact, and enhance the quality of life for transplant patients and their caregivers.

Financial support is vital to continue offering the critical resources provided by the Family House. Together, we can make a

The Family Circle is made up of meaningful philanthropic 

contributors who give gifts of $250 or more in a calendar year 

to the Gift of Life Family House Annual Fund. This yearly giving 

program is a new initiative from the Family House and is uniquely 

different from our Legacy Garden paver program and special event 

fundraising endeavors. 

The Family Circle invites contributors to give at four suggested 

levels for families, groups and individuals. Your Family Circle gift 

can underwrite several weeks’ accommodations, or sustain the 

Family House in many meaningful ways.

Fashionable Fundraising 

for Transplant Families 

In December, fashion powerhouse Nicole Miller Philadelphia 

helped support transplant families in the area by raising funds for 

Gift of Life Family House. Nicole Miller Philadelphia dedicated its 

20th Annual Men’s Night Event to the House. 

The 20th Annual Men’s Night events took place at Nicole Miller 

Manayunk and Nicole Miller at the Bellevue on December 14 and 

15, and drew in supporters of both Nicole Miller and Gift of Life 

Family House. 

Nicole Miller Philadelphia owner Mary K. Dougherty chose Gift 

of Life Family House as the 20th Annual Men’s Night charity of 

choice to help raise awareness to the organization. 

“Not only are we providing fundraising for Gift of Life Family 

House, but we are raising awareness for the organization,” said 

Dougherty. “Organ donation is something people do not like to 

discuss, so it is important to start a dialogue. The awareness 

aspect will have a long term benefit to Gift of Life Donor Program 

and Gift of Life Family House.”

1. FUNDRAISING IS TEAM-BUILDING. Yes, you read it right! 

Hosting a fundraiser at your company is a great team-building 

experience. Work together to create and plan a “fun-raising” 

event. Your event might be as easy as a car-wash, bake sale or 

pancake breakfast. 

2. GIVE A GIFT. Does your company support charities through 

a grant program or foundation Let us know if there’s an 

opportunity through your company, for us to apply for funding 

for the Family House. 

3. GET OUT OF THE OFFICE AND DEDICATE A DAY OF 

SERVICE. Close your office for a day (or a half-day) and let 

your employees use that time to work at the Family House. 

We have plenty of volunteer opportunities that also work great 

as team building activities, such as participating in our 

Home Cook Heroes program or Family Activity program. 

4. REINFORCE YOUR BRAND WITH EVERY 

CONTRIBUTION. Does the Family House naturally align with 

your business If so, contributing to the Family House will help 

build your brand. Funneling some of your advertising budget into 

a contribution instead (which you then highlight in the fewer ads 

you do run) can be even smarter than running more ads without 

the positive association. 

5. GIVE TO THE FAMILY HOUSE ON BEHALF OF YOUR 

BEST CLIENTS. Instead of fruit baskets or flowers, really make 

an impression on your customers by donating to the Family 

House in their name. You don’t need a holiday say thank you; 

recognizing your clients outside of the holiday season really 

makes you stand out from the crowd. 

6. SPONSOR AN EVENT. Friends of the Family House host 

several fundraising events throughout the year and are always 

looking for new sponsors. Get your company’s logo recognized 

while supporting our families. 

7. DRESS DOWN FOR A DAY. Everyone loves an excuse to 

wear jeans! Have your staff participate in a dress down day for 

a small donation. For a twist, you could organize a themed dress 

down day – you pick the theme! 

8. DONATE “STUFF” RATHER THAN MONEY. The Family 

House raises funds through auctions and raffles. Contributing 

your company’s product or service — a vacation package 

from a travel agent, sports tickets from your client relations 

department, or brunch from a restaurant — is an excellent way 

to spread your name in the community. 

9. PARTNER UP. Double your impact in the community by 

finding another company, big or small, to join you in a volunteer 

or fundraising effort for the Family House. Share the cost of an 

ad highlighting the partnership. 

10. CREATE SOME LINK LOVE. Help the Family House by adding 

a link from your Web site to the Family House site – 

www.GiftofLifeFamilyHouse.org. It builds goodwill for your 

company, while letting your customers discover the Family House

Listed for Transplant 

Transplant caregivers experience several different emotions throughout 

the transplant process: Anxiety, fear, hope and excitement are just a few. 

Transplants can evoke similar emotions in our children—emotions they 

may have never felt before or even know how to describe. As parents, it’s 

our responsibility to support our children during the difficult process of 

a transplant by accepting their feelings and assisting them in identifying 

new coping skills. 

Your children may not speak about their feelings, but they are aware 

of what is going on and are learning how to handle tough situations by 

following your behaviors. Remember to: 

1. Express your feelings to your children, but don’t put the burden of your 

emotions on them, making them feel they need to take care of you as well. 

2. Reach out to your support systems for help. By asking for help you 

are showing your children that it is an acceptable positive action to seek 

support when needed. 

Following are additional ways for you to assist your children throughout 

the transplant process. 

FIRST: 

• Acknowledge the situation with your children by starting a conversation 

about what is happening. 

• Be open with your children and let them know that it is OK to talk about 

their feelings, ask questions, and express their concerns or fears. 

• Ask your children questions about the situation to better understand 

their feelings. 

• Don’t ignore the situation just because they aren’t asking questions. 

REMEMBER: 

• Listen to them, allow them to talk without interrupting, and allow them 

to cry if they need to do so. 

• Be honest with them. However, the information you provide must be 

age-appropriate in a way that’s understandable to them. 

• Express how much you love them and that you will always be there 

for them. 

THEY DON’T WANT TO TALK 

• Don’t force them. 

• Let them know that you are available when they need you. 

• Counseling and support groups allow them to express their feelings 

with someone separate from the situation and with whom they won’t 

feel judged. 

EACH CHILD COPES DIFFERENTLY: 

• Acknowledge and accept their coping skills, even if they are different 

from your own. 

• Introduce new coping skills. 

• Talk to the transplant social worker if you are unsure of age-appropriate 

coping skills. 

LIFE WITH TRANSPLANT: 

• Try to reduce the chaos by keeping a family schedule to so they know 

what to expect and when to expect which will help maintain normalcy. 

• Allow them to continue with their after-school activities and try to 

attend as much as possible. 

• Continue to do things together as a family system, such as having 

a weekly family night. 

Transplantation can be difficult for all family members, young and old. 

Reach out to the transplant social worker if you are feeling lost, need 

additional resources, or just need someone to talk to for yourself.

“A Family Affaire” 

Remembers Father, Husband and Entertains Supporters 

On Sunday, February 12th the 4th Annual “A Family Affaire” 

presentation of “Cats: The Musical” took place at the Ritz Theatre 

Company in Haddon Township, New Jersey. Hosted by the Bottino/ 

Petrelli family, along with the Southern New Jersey Coalition on 

Organ and Tissue Donation, this very special performance took 

place in memory of Joe Bottino, Jr. who sadly passed away five years 

ago from liver failure caused by Hepatitis C. Joe was on the waiting 

list to receive a liver transplant when he passed away. 

During the time of his hospitalization, his family would travel back 

and forth, sometimes up to two hours each way, from their home 

in New Jersey to Philadelphia, to be by his side. As a result, the 

family is passionate about Gift of Life Family House and the 

Adopt-a-Family program. 

“We feel fulfilled and blessed through our efforts,” says Dianne 

Bottino of her work with the House. “It is so rewarding to know that 

we can do something to positively impact the road another family 

will travel.” All of the proceeds from “A Family Affaire” go to the 

Adopt-a-Family program at the Family House, to help take some of 

the financial burden off transplant families. 

In addition to celebrating Joe’s life, over $12,000 was raised for the 

Adopt-a-Family Program. Special thanks to all who were involved 

in organizing this event and to the very generous event sponsors:

13 Year-Old Girl 

Honors the Family House 

with “Mitzvah” 

On February 20, 2012, the Family House received a generous 

donation from one of its youngest contributors. Thirteen year-old 

Sarah Noye recently celebrated her Bat Mitzvah and wanted to give 

back to an organization close to her heart. 

“My Dad had a cornea transplant when he was 28 years old,” said 

Sarah. “He had a disease that made him very close to being blind 

and the doctors decided that he needed a transplant. Through the 

efforts of Gift of Life and the generosity of a donor family, my Dad’s 

vision was restored.” Sarah donated $3000 to the Family House 

along with Wish List items and was previously a Home Cook Hero 

with her family. Sarah became interested in the House a few years 

ago, when her older brother Marshall also donated to Gift of Life 

after he celebrated his Bar Mitzvah. 

“When my brother, Marshall, did his Mitzvah project with Gift of 

Life, the Family House was just a dream and a blueprint. In the three 

years since then, my family has had the opportunity to be part of 

the building of the Family House and on October 2nd, I was the 

guest chef at the Family House as part of their Home Cook Heroes 

Program.” Thank you to Sarah and the entire Noye family!
