Wanda-Sue to make
voyage into history
planning and preparation.
Owners Gail and Gunnar
Slack are excited at the
prospect of being able to offer
this unique passage and hope
to make it an annual event.
The last time this trip was
made by a commercial passenger
vessel was well over
half a century ago. The
Wanda-Sue was built by the
late George Slack, a wellknown
Kamloops resident. It
was his dream to reprise the
days of the river steamers.
The trip will run in two
stages with the trip from
Kamloops to Chase being
offered as a separate passage
departing the city at midmorning
with passengers
being returned to Kamloops
by highway coach on June
20th. The second stage will
see a different group of passengers
bused to Chase June
21st and departing for a voyage
on the Shuswap Lakes
and into Salmon Arm.
Passengers will overnight at
the luxurious Prestige Inn
Resort in Salmon Arm and
depart June 22nd for the
return to Kamloops.
Capt. Dave Tyre, a seasoned
ship’s master from
large cruise ships will command
Wanda-Sue and says he
is looking forward to the
challenge. “This will allow
the crew to show their
colours.” While the Captain
and 1st Mate will concentrate
on navigation and safety the
rest of the crew will be there
to ensure the passengers are
comfortable and enjoying the
trip. The scenery during the
voyage will be spectacular
and wildlife watchers will
have the chance to view a
wide variety of species.
The 108 ton MV Wanda-
Sue is fully equipped for long
voyages and is Transport
Canada certified to handle
100 passengers. On this voyage,
however, she will be limiting
space to 50 guests to
improve passenger comfort
and meet the requirements of
the resort in Salmon Arm.
Anyone interested in making
either stage of the voyage
can contact Wanda-Sue
offices at 374-7447 for
details.
Siberian
Tiger Dies
BY ROB PURDY
The Kamloops Wildlife
Park Board of Directors, staff
and volunteers were saddened
by the loss of Czarina, the
Amur (Siberian) tiger, who
passed away on May 6, 2003.
Czarina was a personal friend
to many at the park and in the
community.
Czarina, at 18 years of age,
was an elderly tiger. She had
been on medication for
Chronic Renal Failure for the
past half year. Park veterinarian,
Dr. Dave Sedgman,
explained that many cat
species, including domestic
cats, are prone to CRF.
Tigers are known to have a
life span of approximately 20
years. Czarina had also been
receiving treatment for arthritis.
Staff had constructed a
heated sleeping platform for
her that consisted of a circulating
hot water heater.
Czarina was a registered
member of the Amur Species
Survival Program (SSP),
which oversees breeding for
captive Amur tigers in accredited
zoological facilities
throughout North America.
Before coming to the
Kamloops Wildlife Park,
Czarina contributed to conservation
of her species by breeding
at the Granby Zoo in
Quebec and successfully raising
two young who are also
registered in the Amur SSP.
The Kamloops Wildlife
Park had provided a retirement
home for Czarina. The
park is still home to Zef, a registered
male in the Amur SSP,
who is now 16 years old and
in good health.
There are less than 400
Amur tigers remaining in the
wild.
