Personal Safety
The first step to staying safe is being aware that you are a
potential victim of personal crime. Your best protection is
awareness. Be suspicious - too much trust in human nature
can make you an easy target for a criminal.
• Stay alert to your surroundings and trust your instincts. If
something or someone makes you feel uncomfortable, take
action and do something to get out of the situation.
• If you can, stay on busy well-lit streets where there are
other people.
• Do not carry a purse unless you have to. Criminals always
associate a purse with money. Consider using a beltpack,
fanny pack or wallet that can be concealed on your person.
• Opening the door of your house to a stranger can be dangerous.
Place a peephole in your door and do not open the
door to anyone you do not know without some kind of verification
or identification. If someone claims to need help -
offer to telephone for help on their behalf.
Search Engines
Search engines refer to a
special class of programs
that enable the retrieval of
electronic information.
More commonly we use the
term to refer to a WWW
based resource that allows us
to search the Web for information.
This is the type of
search engine I will discuss
in this article. There are
many popular search engines
available to Web users.
Google, Altavista, All the
Web are just some of the
hundreds of search engines a
person can choose from. I
will try to give a basic
understanding of how they
work and some techniques
people can use to optimize
their searching.
Web search engines must
first create a database on
pages. Running a type of
program called a “spider”, it
grabs as many web pages as
possible from web servers.
The information collected is
then organized using an
“indexer” to create an index
of the words contained in the
web pages. Lastly, the
search engine will use some
type of algorithm to search
these indices for relevant
results. An algorithm is
basically a set of rules for
completing a task. For a
search engine this is very
important for providing useful
and well-organized
results. Generally, both the
size of the index and the
I will be away visiting
relatives and friends for a
portion of this month of
May. I see Barbara has a
very fine variety of entertainment
arranged for the
first part of May. We also
had Mother’s Day in May.
Isn’t it so very nice to be
coddled and pampered We
are forever children at times.
We are never alone when we
have children and grandchildren.
Let us say a prayer for
Mothers who raised us. They
algorithm’s ability to sort for
relevancy will dictate a
search engine’s usefulness.
Search techniques can
also be helpful in finding the
information you want.
Some basic rules to keep in
mind are:
1. Be specific. Too
general a search term can
yield far too many search
results.
Use the advanced search
feature in most search sites.
This will bring up more
options and allow you to
modify searches to be more
effective.
Use search engines to
find other resources. While
a search engine may not be
good for finding a person’s
phone number it would help
find a phone directory site.
Google ( HYPERLINK
“http://www.google.com”
www.google.com) is one of
the best search engines
available. It has a large database,
excellent algorithm,
many advanced features and
a clean, easy to read interface.
Both beginners and
experts will find it an excellent
search tool.
People with some WWW
experience who would like
to improve their searching
skills may consider taking
We have been enjoying
the blossoms on the lilac
bushes. Such an old-fashioned
shrub and we are still
entranced with its beauty and
perfume.
Several residents are busy
with balcony flowers and
garden plots. it is so nice to
be able to move easily in and
out of the fresh air.
I will not be writing again
until the latter part of
August.
