BY DR. PAUL WARREN
As you get older, the
chances are that your gums
will start to recede. This
process will start to expose
the root of the tooth, which
can cause an increased risk
of tooth decay. A thorough
daily oral care routine,
which includes brushing
and flossing, plus regular
fluoride treatments, administered
by your dentist, can
help make your teeth more
resistant to decay and can
help alleviate the pain associated
with sensitive teeth.
To help ensure healthy
teeth for life, consider the
following six-month “training”
plan:
Month #1: Make the
Commitment.
• Schedule a full dental
exam, thorough cleaning
and oral cancer scan. Ask
for an evaluation of the state
of your gums.
Month #2: Choose Your
Tools and Use Them
Wisely.
• Choose a clinically
tested toothbrush, such as
Oral-B CrossAction
Vitalizer. The proprietary
CrissCross bristles are positioned
to lift and remove
plaque between teeth and
along the gum line. Studies
show it removes 90 per cent
of plaque between teeth
after one brushing, and
removes twice as much
plaque along the gum line
than the leading manual
toothbrush. A row of soft
gum stimulators massages
gums and increases circulation.
• To make the most of
your oral care routine,
remember to:
• Brush at least twice a
day, for two minutes each
time.
• Position your brushhead
at a 45-degree angle to
your teeth, and brush in a
circular motion with gentle
pressure.
• Floss at least once
daily, in a C-shaped motion
against the tooth.
Month #3: Stay
Motivated.
• Focus on the improvements
to your smile and the
way your mouth feels to
stay on track with your new
oral health regimen.
Month #4: Time For A
Change.
• It’s time to switch your
toothbrush for a fresh one,
be sure and get a new brush
every three months. Oral-B
toothbrushes feature a row
bristles to serve as a
reminder, when they fade
halfway down, it’s time for
a new toothbrush.
Month #5: Watch out for
“Smile Sabotagers.”
• Make sure you’re not
defeating your best efforts
with bad habits. Sugary
snacks promote tooth decay,
smoking can increase the
risk of gum disease and
chewing tobacco raises the
risk of oral cancer.
Month #6:
Congratulations!
• You’ve completed six
months of your regimen,
and it’s time to visit the dentist
again for a six-month
cleaning. This visit is far
more likely to be pleasant
than the last.
