Regulars station commander’s foreword
Marham
Military
Wives Choir
Supporting Sir
Cliff Richard
The Marham
Military Wives Choir
were absolutely
thrilled to perform
as the support for
Sir Cliff Richard
at Blickling Hall,
Norfolk as part of
his ‘Still Reelin’ and
A-Rockin’ Tour.
We start another month with the Station
maintaining focus on our personnel around the
globe. I take great pride in knowing that we are
making a real difference in so many places.
31 Squadron have a few weeks before we
will see them back here after they have
handed over the reigns to our colleagues
in squadrons from RAF Lossiemouth.
We also have numerous people in the
Falklands, across the Middle East, and
a few other places in Afghanistan, and
beyond. We must not forget, of course,
3 FP Wing who continue to provide
protection to Coalition Troops.
I was delighted to see the
Queen’s Birthday Flypast at first hand
on a windy Saturday in London. The
Tornados from Marham and Lossiemouth
were working hard alongside the
Typhoons, a C-17, a Voyager, a Tristar,
VC-10, the BBMF Lancaster, a Sentry,
HS125s, a Chinook, Merlins and the
Red Arrows. A great occasion.
I wish to congratulate all those
personnel who were recognized in the
recent Honours List. You received a wide
range of well-deserved awards, and I hope
that I have the honour of presenting you
with them formally in coming months. The
rest of the Station is very proud of you.
RAF Marham personnel are constantly
helping charities and engaging with our
supportive community. As I write II(AC)
Squadron personnel are launching a cycle
ride from Farnborough to Montrose – I
hope the weather holds out for them. I am
also looking forward to joining many of you
on parade in King’s Lynn. We are exercising
our Freedom of King’s Lynn by marching
through the town bearing arms. It is an
ancient privilege that we are proud to hold.
I was also able to represent the Station at a
charity cycle event organized by Leonard
Cheshire Disability from Park House in
the Sandringham Estate – a worthy UK
charity with strong local connections.
Have a good July.
It was an experience none of the
ladies will forget and one that,
since the Marham Choir started in
January 2012, they never foresaw! It
was (especially for the Cliff Richard
fans in the choir) a dream-cometrue
and a far cry from their daily
lives at work, raising children,
and supporting their other halves
serving Queen and country.
Every song was met with rousing
applause and the set was completed
with a standing ovation! When the
ladies joined the rest of the crowd to
get ready to watch some of the fabulous
concert, there was another round of
spontaneous applause and a chorus
of ‘thank yous’ from members of the
public! It was humbling to say the least.
Choir member Vicky Smith
said, ‘I had an amazing time; loved
every minute. I’m very proud to
be a military wife and also to be in
the Marham ‘Bluebirds’ MWC.’
Rosanne Wilkinson Keates said,
‘I was particularly touched by the
warm reception from the audience,
who spontaneously applauded
when we walked out to watch Sir
Cliff. I’m still on a high now, and
it was an honour to perform with
everyone.’ Vicky Harris-Hodges added
to that it was ‘a wonderfully moving
response from the audience.’
Christina Tuckwell added, ‘It
was an amazing experience I will
remember for the rest of my life.’
A charitable donation made by
the promoter will go to the Military
Wives Choirs Foundation which brings
women in the military community
closer together through singing.
The New Eccles
Hall School, in rural
Norfolk accepts children
of mixed ability, some
with specific learning
difficulties for whom
special educational
facilities are available.
The school provides
a broad curriculum in
which all pupils are able
to fulfil their potential and
where possible achieve
excellence. The school is
small (150 on roll) and this
is an important factor in
being able to address the
needs of each individual
pupil.
They are encouraged
to hold a sense of selfrespect
addition it is hoped that
when a pupil leaves Eccles
well equipped to accept
the responsibilities in the
trophies to the
winners of the
10k run which
the Sqn took
part in as part
of the King’s
Lynn GEAR.
It was a chance encounter
by OC 31 with OC CSF that
gave the idea to the Sqn
taking part in the Great East
Anglian Run, which has now
become a firm community
fixture in the West Norfolk
diary. Of course with the
Sqn deployed in Kandahar
the Sqn would have to run
its own race in theatre,
where conditions were
never going to be same as
those in West Norfolk.
Nevertheless,
undeterred, OC 31 went back
to rally his troops to take part
and in the end managed to
get 38 members of the Sqn
signed up to run the race, all
of which had to take place
during their off duty hours.
While this was going on,
Community Support liaised
with Roger Partridge, the
event organiser, who offered
up his support by providing
goodie bags, medals and
trophies for the winners.
In the end the race
took place at the same time
as that in King’s Lynn but in
much hotter temperatures,
which were topping 38°C at
the time and at a height of
3500ft above sea level with Flt
Lt Bicknell coming in first in a
very credible time of 43.34.
At the time of going to print, eight intrepid cyclists and
their support team will be setting off on a bike ride to
commemorate the first ever deployment of aircraft to a
purpose built aerodrome and to mark the Centenary of
Montrose Air Station.
One hundred years ago,
personnel from No II (AC)
Sqn made the historic flight
from the Royal Aircraft
Factory in Farnborough,
Hampshire to their new home
in Montrose, Scotland.
The team are hoping
to cycle the distance in less
than half the time it took their
forebears to make the flight 100
years ago. Although in today’s
aircraft the journey would take
just under an hour, 100 years
ago it took two weeks, due to
the inclement weather and
fragile aircraft. The team have
planned the ride to follow the
1913 route as much as possible
and it is intended to engender
skills in leadership, teamworking,
planning, navigation
and physical stamina.
Squadron Leader ‘Dutch’
Holland, the team leader of the
cycle said, ‘The team are really
looking forward to the challenge,
everyone has been out training
hard, although some of the hill
climbs we will experience may
be a bit more dramatic than
we find in Norfolk! We relish
the opportunity to recreate this
historic journey and would like
to thank both Farnborough Air
Sciences Trust and the Montrose
Air Station for their continuing
support in commemorating
the Squadron’s history.”
En route the team will lay a
wreath at the grave of Lt Desmond
Arthur, the first fatality recorded by
II (AC) Sqn, before completing the
journey at Montrose Air Station.
In addition to the bike
ride, the Squadron will donate a
commemorative engraved ‘brick’
to the Farnborough Air Sciences
Trust (FAST), for the museum’s
Cody Statue Project. The
Squadron who were originally
part of the Royal Flying Corps
were formed in the building in
Farnborough where the museum
stands today, bringing particular
historic significance to this event.
Look out in next month’s
issue where we will cover
the event in more detail.
II (AC) Sqn have
chosen the Royal Air Force
Association (RAFA) as their
charity for the year. While the
Centenary Cycle is not a charity
event, the Squadron will be
fundraising throughout the
year and donations can be
made at mydonate.bt.com/
fundraisers/shinytwo.
Socially the school’s
intention is that pupils
should accept each other
and learn to live easily
RAFCulinaryCompetition
Service catering personnel from RAF Marham recently took part in the
RAF Culinary Competition, which was held at the Catering Training
Sqn (RAF), Worthy Down. This annual competition is held to select the
RAF Culinary Team that competes in the Combined Service Culinary
Competition (CSCC), which is held at Shrivenham during September 2013.
The CSCC is a prestigious event, which attracts Michelin starred chefs to
judge competitors to exacting standards.
Written By: SAC Louise Lyon
RAF Marham’s Catering Flight has enjoyed
great success at both competitions in
the past and the hunger and interest to
compete this year was as high as ever.
Unfortunately, as the dates clashed with
the Annual Formal Reception in the
Officers Mess, a slightly smaller team than
normal, consisting of eight personnel
was selected. The team of seven highly
skilled chefs and a caterer was expertly led
and mentored by Sgt Jason Woollett and
consisted of Cpl Andy Hanson and SAC’s Dan
Scott, Liam Grime, Dan Cook, Paul Kelly, Chris
Woodcock, Louise Lyon and Mike Salmon.
Two weeks prior to the competition,
the competitors worked relentlessly to
practice and refine their trade skills, mostly
in their own time. Dishes and Silver Service
skills were practised, critiqued and refined
during the 3 run through each individual/
team is allowed. This was turbulent time as the
competitors trade skills, time management
and confidence suffered a rollercoaster ride,
which I have to say is perfectly normal.
On arrival at Worthy Down, competitors,
under the ever watchful eye of Sgt Woollett,
unpacked the vehicles of equipment and
ingredients in readiness for the two days
of exceptionally competitive cooking and
serving. Equipment was checked and rechecked
prior to departing RAF Marham
and prior to each event to ensure it had
not been ‘mislaid’, by other teams!
First to brave the judges was SAC
Dan Scott, a novice who was relatively
new to competition cooking; however, his
skills would soon prove otherwise. Dan
won a Silver Medal ‘Best in Class’ in the
Junior Fish category, producing a Sole
Bonne Femme; delicately poached Sole
Fillets served with a fish veloute, enhanced
with lemon juice, white wine and slices of
mushroom. This was a brilliant achievement
and set the stall for others to follow.
The Cook and Serve category was
next. Cpl Andy Hanson and SAC Liam Grime
prepared a three course meal consisting
of a Sea Bass starter, a Wood Pigeon main
course, and a Dark Chocolate Mousse. The
meal was served by SAC Louise Lyon to two
guests, one of which included the drafter
from Manning (good to keep him happy!)
As the Caterer she had to inform the guests
of the complex menu, Silver Serve each dish
and put the finishing touches to the dessert
by flambéing cherries. Timing was critical
throughout and their excellent teamwork
was rewarded with a Bronze Medal; narrowly
missing out on a Silver Medal by two points.
Newly promoted SAC Paul Kelly
competed in the Open Lamb category. Paul
had competed previously in junior categories;
however, this time he opted to challenge
himself further by competing at a higher
and more competitive level. Paul produced
a seared Canon of Lamb, served with a Rich
Red Wine Jus, Fondant Potato, Carrot Puree
and Braised Red Cabbage. Although he
earned a respectable Certificate of Merit
for his dish, the experience gained was
of great benefit and will undoubtedly
prepare him for future competitions.
SAC Chris Woodcock was next in the
Open Game category, where he cooked Pan
Fried Grouse, accompanied with a Grouse
Bon Bon, Celeriac Puree, Wild Mushrooms,
Baby Kale and a Poached Saffron Potato
served with a Rich Grouse Jus. Chris was
the back bone of the team throughout
and could always be seen assisting his
fellow competitors. Considering his lack
of sleep, he performed very well and
achieved a very credible Bronze Medal.
Next to perform was SAC Dan Cook.
Dan competed in the Hot Dessert category,
possessing the nerve and strength of
character to produce an Apple Soufflé
accompanied with a Calvados Crème
Anglaise. A soufflé in an incredibly difficult
dish to perfect using equipment you are
familiar with; however, he was now working
in an unfamiliar environment. Despite
his sterling efforts, the harsh judging
resulted in a Certificate of Merit, missing
out on a Bronze Medal by two points.
Our penultimate competitor was
SAC Mike Salmon in the Junior Chef
category. Mike, the Catering Flight’s
answer to Lewis Hamilton, both inside and
outside of the kitchen, produced a Main
Course and a Dessert. His Main Course
consisted of Tournedos of Beef, garnished
with tomatoes, mushrooms, Parmentier
Potatoes, Lamb’s Lettuce and served with
a Chasseur Sauce. His Dessert Course,
which was built around the textures
of pineapple, consisted of a Pineapple
Sponge, Coconut Sorbet, Coconut Crumb,
Pineapple, Kiwi and Chilli Compote,
Pineapple Crisp and served with a Vanilla
Anglaise. The judges were very impressed
with his organisation, trade skills and overall
menu, awarding him a Silver Medal.
Last, but by no means least was
SAC Grime in the Senior Chef category.
Liam, a current member of the RAF Buffet
Team and Combined Service Culinary Arts
Team, has been heavily involved in the
planning and mentoring of all competitors
in the run up to the competition. Liam
had not planned to enter this category;
however, Sgt Jason Woollett had other
ideas. With only 12 hours notice, Liam
‘volunteered’ to enter what is arguably
the most prestigious and competitive
category of the competition. Liam did
not disappoint. He received his box of
unknown ingredients, compiled a three
course menu, which entailed a butter
pan fried crab for starter and for the
main pan seared breast of wood pigeon
accompanied with wilted spinach, fondant
potato, and a game jus, and for dessert a
dark chocolate mousse, vanilla soil, cherry
compote, finished with a vanilla ice cream.
Liam had to produced these beautiful
dishes within 2½ hours without the aid of a
recipe book. Under unbelievable pressure
his performance was truly remarkable. He
achieved a Gold Medal, Best in Class!!!
Without a doubt, Sgt Woollett and
his team performed exceptionally, doing
both themselves and the Station proud.
The judges’ constructive feedback will
undoubtedly provide a solid platform for
those selected to represent the RAF at the
CSCC later this year. Roll on September!
Team
Katy
Team Katy is riding
2,000+ miles
around the UK to
raise money for the
Alzheimer’s Society
after his mother,
Kate, was diagnosed
with Early Onset
Alzheimer’s last year
at just 56 years old.
We will be doing the ride on motorcycles
as Kate has had a passion for them from
an early age. She will be with us for the
duration of the ride, coming along in the
sidecar of a classic Triumph Bonneville; the
side car is moulded from the drop tank of
a Mosquito. We will be starting the ride
from the Tri Anglia Wheels Sidecar rally in
Bedfordshire before heading around the
UK, taking in the Four Corners of Britain -
Lizard Point in Cornwall, Ardnamurchan
Point and Dunnet Head in Scotland
form the Southerly, Westerly and most
Northerly corners. The epic ride will end at
The Federation of Sidecar Clubs National
Rally at Selby. Just for good measure we
will include Land’s End and John O’ Groats
Prestigious
Award for
RAF Marham
Warrant Officer
WO Honour was recently
awarded a Diocesan Medal by
the RC Bishop to the armed
forces, Bishop Richard Moth.
This prestigious medal is
awarded to approximately
seven people a year and
usually to members of the
25,000 Roman Catholics within
the armed forces. For WO
Honour to be awarded one as
non catholic is testament to
his community, charity and
youth work over many years.
The award was presented in
the Basilica in Lourdes in front
of approximately 300 people.
Warrant Officer David
Honour will be retiring from
the RAF in March 2014 after
38 years of faithful service.
His contribution to the RAF
has been rewarded by the
appropriate authorities, but the
integrity which has been at the
heart of his service is rooted in
This is a charity dedicated to
supporting the children of men
and women who have fallen
whilst serving with the British
Armed Forces. As parents
ourselves this is a subject
that is close to our hearts.
In preparation we ran three
times a week (a minimum of six
support of his local church
chaplains of all denominations.
In recent years he has been
manifest in his dedicated
support to the International
Military Pilgrimage to Lourdes.
David Honour is a living
witness to the Christian way
is fitting that the Bishop of the
Forces has agreed to reward
his example and dedication
to have finished it and raised a
ISS GEMS Awards for RAF Marham Personnel
The quarterly GEMS awards were held in the
Officers’ Mess Ante Room with ISS Defence
Director, Aiden Murphy & OC BSW Wing
Commander Neil Tomlin presenting eight
recognition certificates and the GEMS award
winner with a gift voucher and certificate.
This is the third time that GEMS
certificates have been awarded, and by
far the most hotly contested. The nine
nominees were Jill Arthur, Angela Ware
and Leigh Williams from the Bull Café
Lounge Bar, Corporal Andy Hollingsworth
from the Officers’ Mess kitchen, Anna
Dowsing (former winner), Lindsay Leonard
& Keith Appleyard from the ISS Main Office,
and second time nominees Elizabeth
Thompson from the SPAR Convenience
Shop & Denise McLean from Louis’ Bar.
The winner of the GEMS award was
Angela Ware, the head chef in the Bull
Café Lounge Bar. Angela was part of the
team that first produced the menu with
Executive Chef Shane O’Connor at the
Spotlight, RAF Brize-Norton in January.
Since the introduction of the new menu
in February there has been a three fold
increase in food sales, attracting many
new customers. The attraction of the
choices on the menu and the professional
approach in which Angela leads her
team has made the Bull the most sought
after venue for a meal at lunchtimes
constantly attracting positive comments
whether it be Service personnel or
families from the local community. Well
done Angela, keep up the good work.
Long Service Award
Christine Callaby was presented with her 15
Funny Fokker’s
at RAF Marham
May 15th saw the arrival of The
Funny Fokker’s Comedy Tour at The
Grafton Club RAF Marham, a lot of
preparation & publicity would hopefully
see a full house for the evening.
Very much the unsung hero of the
Comedy Tour compere Chris Gilbert
arrived with Phil Nicol and they were given
a tour of the venue, prior to setting up
the Funny Fokker’s unique backdrop. The
second comedian Rob Rouse arrived later
and met a few of the gathering audience
in Louis’ Bar. Limited seating saw about
180 people in the audience with a great
cross section of Officers’, SNCOs’, Junior
Ranks, Civilian workers and Wives from
married quarters, plus ISS Defence
Director Aiden Murphy & Regional
Director Andy Hunter in the audience.
From the moment Chris took the
stage it was the start a terrific night
of entertainment, his banter with the
audience was supreme, and enabled
a fantastic atmosphere for the whole
evening, climaxing with Dave from the
audience performing a duet with Phil
Nicol towards the end of the show.
Feedback from everyone was positive,
with the most frequently asked question
being, “When is the next one”
The whole event, as with at all the
ISS Units, showed that ISS can throw
a party. It was all hands on deck to
produce the show on the night, including
volunteers from Catering Core Manpower
providing and selling the food.
The Comedy tour has now
performed at all RAFCRL Units and has
been so well received that planning
is currently going ahead for a second
tour in September/October, so look
out for details of another fun night.
Written By: The Chaplaincy Team
July is typically the time of the year
when minds are turned to holidays and
time off. Long days and hopefully good
weather whets our appetite for a change
from the normal routine of life and
space to rest and refresh ourselves.
Whether your idea of a holiday is an
extreme sports adventure, or tasting
the culture of a new place at home
or abroad, or just chilling by the
poolside, everyone needs a break.
Recent psychological research
confirms (what we already know – but
it’s useful to hear it again) – that rest,
relaxation and stress reduction are
very important for people’s well-being
and health. This can be accomplished
through daily activities such as
exercise and relaxation, but holidays
are an important part of this as well.
Some medical professionals go even
further and say that a decreased risk of
heart disease and improved reaction
times are some of the benefits from
taking time off. The mind is very
powerful and can help with healing,
so a rested and relaxed mind is able
to help the body heal better.
The research also points out
that most people have a better life
perspective and are more motivated
to achieve their goals after a vacation,
even if it is only a 24-hour time -out.
A popular online travel agency
surveyed holiday makers in 2010, and
reported that it is rare for people to use
all the holiday that they have earned.
Nearly all European countries showed a
growing trend of people losing days or
having to carry over days to the following
year. France topped the list, identifying
Force Development Courses
For professional
enhancement of Service
Personnel. Courses
led by the Padres.
Mind of the Believer: Understand
people and cultures. 25th July
Soldier, Freedom Fighter, Terrorist:
A look at the ethics of armed conflict with
reference to ‘Just War Theory.’ 29th August
that most French people take all but
two days of their entitlement. The UK
falls further down the list with only 42%
of people taking all of their leave.
It goes without saying that although
family life can be stressful at times, time
spent away with the family and away
from the work situation is invaluable in
regaining perspective on life and helps
to build stronger relationships with each
other. Families that spend time together
on holiday, return to the normal routine
feeling better, rested, rejuvenated
and reconnected to personal issues.
When returning to the work situation,
employees generally feel better about
their job and feel more productive.
The researchers would give one last
warning: those who don’t take enough
time to relax may find it harder to relax in
the future. Without time and opportunity
to do this the connections in our minds
that produce feelings of well-being and
contentedness become progressively
weaker, making it actually more difficult
to shift into less stressed modes.
So before you send the next
email or book the next appointment
in your diary, consider this, have you
had or planned enough down time
needed for your body to go through
the process of restoration If not, why
not Only when you are away from
external stresses can the body relax
enough to activate restoration.
The Marham Community Library Undergoes Reorganisation
The RAF Marham Community Library is currently undergoing a
period of reorganisation, this involving the restocking of books,
reissue of membership cards and changes to the internal layout.
In order to assist in the
collection of outstanding
books a fines amnesty was
introduced which resulted
in a number of books that
had been absent from the
library being returned.
However, there are still a
number that have not been
returned and all those with
RAF Marham Adds New Centre
on to its List of Station Charities
Bridge For Heroes, is a drop in Contact Centre based in
King’s Lynn for serving, ex service and dependants, providing
help and advice on a whole range of issues.
The Bridge for Heroes Charity
was formed in September 2010
and in 2011 opened its Contact
Centre in King’s Lynn, at the time
all run and funded by volunteers.
The veterans in Norfolk
alone totals 7,825, including war
parents, disablement, widows,
unmarried dependants and
child allowance. When the
serving community is added
the total increases considerably,
the Centre providing its
services to all who seek it.
In addition, as the Centre
it is the only one of its kind in
the area it has found itself also
serving surrounding areas of
Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and
Lincolnshire. It delivers direct and
immediate frontline support to
RAF Marham Contact Houses
Receive Face Lift
The final work on the revamp of the RAF
Marham Contact/Welfare Houses has now been
completed with the last two lodges located
opposite the main gate having been handed
back to Community Support during the week.
books outstanding are in the
process of being contacted.
The updating of the
membership register is also being
undertaken and those wishing
to remain a member or to join
the library are being asked to
complete a new membership
application form, after which
members will be issued with
serving, ex service and families and
contains a café, museum, respite
area, support area and a shop.
The Centre has proved its
need many times over, not only
with the original target group of
the Armed Forces community
(past and present) but also the
local Norfolk community. The
support ranges from respite breaks,
pension’s advice, compensation
claims, housing advice, service
records, military historical research,
veteran’s advice and guidance.
In one month alone it
provided over 300 individual
support sessions, ranging from
one-to-one therapy sessions to
group therapy, model making
and other hobby type activities.
The Centre relies almost solely on
All the houses now have new
bathrooms and kitchens
and have been decorated
throughout. In addition they
have all been refurnished
with new appliances and soft
furnishings thereby ensuring
that the Lodges, for those
who require emergency
accommodation, are of
the highest standard.
The funding for the
refurbishment was provided by
RAF Central funds and RAFA,
without which it would not
have been possible to bring the
houses up to their current state.
Whilst the prime
purpose of the Lodges is to
barcoded membership cards,
thus simplifying the issue and
return of books. Membership
forms are available from the Hive
or the Marham Hub site where
they can be completed on line.
The revamp also envisages
a new information facility, with
access to DII and JPA, Wi-Fi and a
reading area being set aside where
voluntary contributions and
volunteers to support it and
was chosen as a Station Charity
because of all the valuable help
and assistance it was providing
the local service community.
ensure emergency welfare
accommodation is available
for those who require it, they
are also available for routine
use by Station personnel.
With the upgrade to the
properties complete we also
felt it was time to review the
general hire charges, which will
show a modest increase from
the 1st October 2013. In addition,
it was also recognised that the
current deposit was set at an
amount that was inadequate
for dealing with any damage
or cleaning costs that might be
incurred and this will also be
increased but will, of course,
still be fully refundable, if the
individuals can relax with a
newspaper, magazine or book.
Although it has been necessary
to close the library during the
reorganisation, it is still possible
to loan or return books, with the
Hive providing access. In addition,
the external courses – Story
Sacks and Children’s Reading
Groups are continuing, with
more courses being planned.
Volunteers are still
being sought to assist in the
reorganisation and future
running of the library and
anybody wishing to provide
voluntary support to the
Library should contact Flt Lt
Gary Walker, OC Community
RAF Marham Thrift Shop
Re-opens Following
Refurbishment
The installation of new shop
frontages, fire systems and disabled
access to the Marham shopping
arcade area, it was decided to use
the opportunity to refurbish the
interior of the Thrift Shop, which
had not had any work done to it for
a number of years.
Funding was
secured for new
shop fittings
and with the
workmen present
changing doors
and knocking
out walls, Karen
Medley, the Thrift
Shop Manageress
and her deputy,
Mary Wanbon
got started on
removing all of
the old fixtures
and fittings. With new carpets
laid and decorating complete
the major task of assembling
and fixing the new shop fittings
got underway. The task was
made easier with the help and
assistance of the SWO and SAC
Chris Medley who devoted a
great deal of their spare time
in getting everything in place
for the grand reopening.
It was hoped that it
would only be necessary
to shut the shop for two
weeks but as is the nature
of these things, this, in the
end, stretched out to four.
However, the wait was
worthwhile and both account
holders and customers
all agree that the layout
and display area is a vast
improvement on before.
The Station Commander
kindly agreed to interrupt
his busy schedule to cut
the ribbon at the opening
which was well supported,
with tea and cakes being
provided by the shop and
Community Support staff.
Anybody wishing to
open an account should call
in to the Shop for details or
Mini chill News
Ever Fancied Building Your Own…
Mini
Well the education team at the, soon to be formed, North
Suffolk Skills Academy (NSSA) decided that doing just that
would be the pinnacle of their BTEC Diploma in Aeronautical
Engineering. Their next problem was how to go about
such a project: Where to get the kit from Where to build
the aeroplane How to build it Where to operate it from
Oh, and how to fund it And how long will it take
However, before answering those
questions, some more details about the
NSSA. The NSSA is a new venture that
sees Bungay High School taking over
the running of the former North Suffolk
Skills Centre, based at the old Halesworth
Middle School, which will see, in addition
to the rebranding, the establishment of
an Aeronautical Engineering Department
and the establishment of a number of new
courses. The Academy will take students
from a number of partner schools and will
offer education and vocational training
for students at L2 (GCSE) and L3 (A Level).
Work is already under way to upgrade the
IT facilities and to equip the aeronautical
engineering workshop with new tooling
including centre lathes, sheet metalwork
tools and TIG welding equipment.
Now that the educational and
support structures are in place, what
about actually building that aeroplane
First of all, where do you get the kit
from Well the Academy has decided that
they will build a Sherwood Ranger aircraft,
as shown in the photo. This aircraft comes
in a number of forms and the one the
Academy have selected is the fully aerobatic
version. The kits are made by The Light
Aircraft Company at their headquarters
in Little Snoring – a local company.
Next, where to build the aeroplane
This is slightly easier. The Halesworth Middle
School is currently empty and the County
Council have agreed that the Aeronautical
Department can use a complex of buildings at
the back of the school opposite the Academy’s
main building. The plan is to set up: a tool
store; a ‘goods in’ and parts store room; a
manufacturing and assembly area; and a
storage area for completed components.
Now, how to build the aeroplane This
may seem an easy question, but the Academy
have decided that, in a first for this type of
build, that the aeroplane will be built using
industry methods and to industry standards.
That means, full control of all parts received,
formal tool control procedures, ‘skill of hand’
tests for the students before they are able to
start work on the aircraft and adherence to
industrial working practices. This then lead
to the supplementary question – ‘how do
we get hold of these industry standards and
practices’, which is where the BAE Systems
team at RAF Marham come in, as, following an
approach from the Academy, the Company
has agreed, in conjunction with the RAF, to
support the project by providing details of the
procedures and practices it uses within CMU
and by providing mentors, under the Education
Ambassador Programme, to supervise and
help the students with the build and provide a
‘real life’ input to the project, along with a visit
or two to RAF Marham, the first of which took
place in May and the photos show the students
being shown around CMU, where they were
able to see the tool control and piece part
spares control measures being implemented.
Ok, so the aircraft gets built, where to
operate it from Again the Academy have
already sorted this and, in conjunction with
the Flying Club at RAF Honington, have
agreed that the aeroplane will be housed
and operated from RAF Honington. In
addition, members of the Flying Club
will also provide specialist support and
the formal ‘sign off’ of the aircraft during
the build and air experience flights
once the aeroplane is completed.
Now to the thorny subjects of funding
and how long the project will take. The
Academy has already secured ‘seed funding’
which will be used to purchase the airframe
so the project can be started, but more
funding will be required to buy the engine
and instruments. In addition, BAE Systems
have been approached to buy the tools to
set up the workshop. As to the timescales,
the Academy is working on establishing the
facility so that it is ready in time for the start
of the new academic year in September,
with a formal opening ceremony to be
held in October. The students will start
their course in September and complete
an element of the academics and skill
of hand training before Christmas, after
which the build phase will start in parallel
to their continued academic studies. It
is intended that the aeroplane will be
completed and ready to fly before the
students sit their exams in 2 years’ time.
In addition to receiving a formal
Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Aeronautical
Engineering, it is intended that the students
will also receive a Royal Aeronautical
Society (RAeS) Aviation Studies Certificate
and the Academy is working with the
RAeS to ensure this is available.
If you would like to know more about
the project, or wish to get involved as an
Education Ambassador, please contact
either Euan Lucie-Smith on Ext: 7490 or
Baz Reed on Ext: 7385. There will also be
the opportunity to meet some of the
students and see a Sherwood Ranger
at the Families’ Day on 22nd August
and we will try to keep you updated
on progress with the project through
regular articles in Marham Matters.
Chill
During the first
weekend of August
(2nd-4th) 2013
Cambridge Mini Club
are holding the ‘2nd
Cambridge Mini Chill,’
the venue for this
event is the Eternity
Sports & Social Club,
Whaddon Road,
Royston SG8 5RL.
Whilst Flying the SSAFA banner at the
Enfield Pageant of Motoring we at
MiniForce were approached by Trevor
Knowles who runs the Cambridge
Mini Club who wanted to know more
about SSAFA and the work they do
at RAF Marham. The outcome was
that he wished to donate the profits
of the ‘chill’ to SSAFA and this money
is to be spent at RAF Marham.
The ‘2nd Cambridge Mini Chill’
is set in 14 acres of camping, there are
on-site toilets and hot showers, plus
a children’s play area. A local band is
performing on both Friday and Saturday
nights. Saturday night is fancy dress
night so it’s hoped lots of people will
dress up for the occasion. Rumours
say there could be prizes to be won!
Spend the daytime relaxing at the
venue or visit the local attractions.
Any auto-jumble gathering dust
in the garage Then bring it along
and sell it! The cost of attending
the whole or part of the weekend is
just £5 per vehicle. Great value for a
weekend of family camping. Bring some
spending money with you though!
Cambridge Mini Club are hoping
to attract as many interesting vehicles
as possible so if you own a classic,
custom, hot rod or something unusual
(it doesn’t need to be a car) then bring
it along for all to see, if not come along,
and admire what others have brought.
As previously stated the profits of
this event are going to SSAFA (Marham)
so it will be great to see lots of people
from the Marham community. Further
event details can be found on the
Facebook (Cambridge Mini Chill), contact
The coldest Spring
on record did not
stop Marham’s
Air Cadet Flight
from any of their
planned activities.
They started at the end of March with
the annual Norfolk and Suffolk Wing
Field competition. Held at Bodney Camp
on STANTA, a team of eight cadets
braved the wind and snow to compete
against the rest of the Wing in Fieldcraft,
Orienteering, First Aid and Archery,
among others. They were creditably
placed in the top half of the final table.
April started with a visit to the RAF
Museum at Cosford to add a practical
element to their study of RAF History.
The following weekend saw four cadets
take part in a Duke of Edinburgh’s
Award expedition in the Peak District by
camping out for two, rather cold, nights
and covering a distance of over 40km.
Their insight into RAF history continued
in May with a visit to the newly opened
Aviation Heritage Centre, kindly arranged
by WO Steve Roberts. This visit proved a
big hit with the cadets, telling them the
story of military aviation in the area, all the
way from World War I to the coming of the
F-35. This month also saw a team of four
cadets take part in the Griffin Challenge,
organised by 2620 Sqn for cadet units in
Norfolk. They acquitted themselves well
and despite not being in the top three,
enjoyed every minute of the day. Especially
the excellent barbecue afterwards.
More exciting activities are in store for
the summer, including a visit to CMU, Annual
Camp at RAF Coningsby, orienteering,
off-road cycling, the Wing drill competition
and an NCO selection day. The whole unit
is also training for their first aid qualification
and one lucky cadet is off to Gibraltar for an
overseas camp in August. Cadets will also
be assisting at Friends and Families Day.
‘There is
about the
outside of a
horse that
is good for
the inside
of a man.’
Sir Winston Churchill
Saddle Club is
Riding High
Following considerable interest
within the community, RAF Marham
has restarted their Saddle Club with
several successful Taster Sessions.
Riders of all abilities joined in these
introductory group sessions which
were held at Blackborough End
Equestrian Centre, near East Winch.
As people strive to lead
healthier lifestyles their
minds invariably wander
back to the days when they
enjoyed an outdoor sport.
Horse riding offers a
great workout for both the
mind and body, physically
boosting the cardiovascular
system, conditioning muscles
and mentally easing stresses
on the mind. Although it may
seem as though the rider is
not engaging in any physical
exercise, an hour’s activity can
burn similar calories to that
of a 30-minute jog or cycle
ride. Furthermore, developing a
relationship and sense of trust
between yourself and your horse
is highly rewarding. Learning to
control and care for an animal
much larger than yourself can
have a profound affect on your
confidence and is a great feeling.
The Physical Benefits
of horse riding
• Improved balance and
muscle strength.
• Improved eye-hand
coordination.
• Increased range of
motion of joints
• Improved respiration
and circulation
• Improved coordination,
faster reflexes and increased
motor planning
• Stretching of tight or
spastic muscles
• Stimulates the integration
of all senses
• Improved distance and
visual perception
Socio-emotional
benefits of
horse riding
• Improved self-confidence
• Improved risk-taking abilities
• Development of patience
• Emotional control
and self-discipline
• Development of respect
and care for animals
• More control over
ones environment
• Development of respect
and care for animals
The Saddle Club is open to serving
members of HM Forces, NATO
Forces, MoD personnel, and their
dependants over the age of 16,
but partners and local civilians may
also be offered membership at
the discression of the committee.
Supported by the Royal Air Force
Equitation Association (RAFEA)
the aim is to promote equitation
throughout the RAF and encourage
participation in equestrian
activities from grass roots level up
to Inter Services competitions.
We provide regular riding
for those without their own horse,
from the complete beginner to
• Junior riding taster
session on Sunday 7th
July at Blackborough
End Equestrian.
• Junior theory session on
Sunday 28th July at 3pm in
the Sandringham Centre.
• The Blue Cross Welfare
talk on Sunday 28th July at
3pm in the Sandringham
Centre - friends and
family welcome.
• Adult riding sessions held
fortnightly on Tuesday
evenings from 7-9pm
at Blackborough End
Equestrian Centre.
All abilities catered for
more details available
from Tommie Gross
the more experienced rider.
Regular sessions are held on
Tuesday evenings from 6pm and
we currently have three ability
groups, with a maximum of six
riders in each. Blackborough End
Equestrian Centre is approved by
the British Horse Society offering
high standards of training and
tuition. The facilities are fantastic,
the atmosphere is very relaxed
and they have horses suitable
for all ages and ability of rider.
For those with their own
horse we are a point of contact
for information about equestrian
facilities and opportunities in the
local area and within the RAF. We
also hope to create opportunities
to develop equine knowledge,
and put forward a team to
compete in the Inter Station
League. The ISL is designed to
encourage all members of the RAF
to give horse riding a go. Anyone
with a nerve to sit on a horse and
tackle a riding test followed by a
course of small fences can join in.
We have also recently
started a Junior Saddle Club
offering monthly Theory
Sessions in The Sandringham
Centre for ages 5-16. There
will also be a Riding Taster
Session on Sunday 7th July
offering formal lessons and
pony rides for the over 3’s.
TIW’s Charity
Anthony Nolan
The Anthony Nolan charity is the chosen
charity of Tactical Imagery-Intelligence
Wing. The charity funds vital work in
research and donor matching for people
in desperate need of a life saving bone
marrow transplant.
Currently, they can only find a
matching donor for half of the people
in desperate need of a lifesaving
transplant. The charity aims to provide
a transplant to every person with a
blood cancer who needs their help.
Janet Qualters (previously Janet Short)
is the Wing Charities Coordinator and each
year organises a clinic at RAF Marham,
where a simple test can be undertaken and
the results put on the bone marrow register
to identify potential donors. Janet is hoping
to organise clinics at other RAF bases and
on the 24th April this year held the first
one at RAF Halton, soon to be followed by
a clinic on the 18th July at RAF Cranwell,
which Janet and SAC Becky Bateman from
TIW will help to organise with the Trust. The
next RAF Marham Anthony Nolan Clinic
is to be held at the Chaplaincy Centre on
the 19th September from 11am till 2pm
where there will be homemade cakes
and refreshments on sale, raffles and of
course, where you can register to become
a potential bone marrow donor, it is hoped
that the clinic will be well supported.
Fundraising continues to go from
strength to strength, with personnel
using their own time to find new and
exciting ways to support the charity.
SAC John Stride raised over £275 from
participating and coordinating a Para’s
10 event, a test of physical stamina and
fitness. This was followed by the annual
GEAR run in King’s Lynn, where SAC James
Potter organised the Wing’s team.
To counter all of the fitness and
running Cpl Dan Ferry organised a
Marham Bake-Off which was a great
success, highlighting some great baking
talents around the station - it also raised
a good deal of money for the charity.
A wedding themed Summer Ball
is being planned by two of the wives
from TIW, Caroline Dobson and Laura
King, the date is the 05 July and all
proceeds will go to the charity – tickets
are available from the HIVE. This is the
first time anyone outside of the wing has
done this and it is greatly appreciated.
As usual, there will be an Anthony
Nolan tent next to the TIW display at
Families Day, where you will be able
to buy raffle tickets and also find out
more about the charity and even join
the volunteer bone marrow register.
On the 28th September there is
also a charity night with a Burlesque
theme at the Sandringham Centre
with all proceeds going to the
charity. Tickets for this evening will
soon be on sale and if you wish to
find out more you can contact Janet
on Ext: 6292 or visit the HIVE.
On 13th May Janet was invited by
the Chief Executive of the Anthony Nolan
to their Annual Reception at Carlton
House Terrace in London where she was
accompanied by SAC Anna Hutchinson,
where the Trust thanked the Wing for
their continuing contribution to the
charity, This was a great honour and
one which was thoroughly enjoyable
for the two people lucky enough to
go. Whilst at the reception, Janet was
invited to attend a laboratory visit
to see how the work is carried out
with regard to ongoing research.
Finally, a huge thank you to everyone
who continues to support us; to date
TIW have raised in excess of £65,000 and
recruited nearly 350 onto the register
for the Anthony Nolan Trust. This charity
helps anyone who needs it and is not
targeted to a specific minority. Please
look out for the clinic details and check
the Anthony Nolan website at www.
anthonynolan.org for more information.
Anthony Nolan saves the lives
of people with blood cancer.
Every day we match remarkable
donors willing to donate their
blood stem cells to people who
desperately need lifesaving
transplants. Come along to
the clinic and find out more.
Fire Safety
ElectricalAppliances
Electrical appliances, plugs and cables that are old or
poorly wired can be a real danger. Just because there’s
no flame does not mean there’s no fire risk. Find out
what to check for to ensure your appliances don’t put
you, your family or housemates at risk from fire.
What to check for
on your electrical
appliances
There are particular danger
signs to look out for on all
electrical items you have
around your home. If you think
something needs fixing or
changing, do it straight away.
Plugs and Sockets
For plugs and sockets, keep
an eye out for the following:
• hot plugs or
sockets, scorch marks,
fuses that often blow,
or flickering lights -
they are all are signs of
loose wiring or other
electrical problems
• badly wired plugs –
any coloured wires
sticking out could come
loose and debris could
also get into the plug
• overloaded sockets
– plugging too many
electrical appliances
into one socket can
lead to overheating
Cables and Leads
The risks with cables
and leads include:
• getting frayed and
damaged – make sure the
outer covering of all power
leads is in good condition
and replace if necessary
• being badly positioned –
they shouldn’t be anywhere
that they could be tripped
over, or near water, cookers
or other sources of heat
Fire Safety electrical appliances Regulars
• running them under
rugs or carpets where
they can wear through
without anyone noticing –
position them elsewhere
Appliances
For electrical appliances,
you should never:
• get them wet – this
includes plugs and
sockets, so don’t put a
vase of flowers on top
of the TV, for example
• leave them on at
night – unless they
are designed to be
left on, like freezers
• put anything in the
microwave that is
made of metal, or has a
metallic finish or parts.
Keep electrical items in
good working order
Follow the guidelines below
to make sure your electrical
items are safe to use.
Maintenance
Electrical appliances,
especially ones that run at
high speeds and contain
motors, like washing
machines, should be
serviced once a year by
a qualified electrician.
Plugs, Sockets
and Cables
Plugs, sockets and cables
also need to be used
correctly, you should:
• make sure you can’t
see any coloured wires
between the plug and
the power lead – change
the plug properly
• make sure the wires
are held firmly in place
inside the plug
• use sockets safely
– it’s better to use a
bar adaptor (multi
board) on a lead than
a block adaptor
• only use one adaptor
per socket – don’t
plug one adaptor into
another and try to keep
to one plug per socket
Fuses
When you’re fitting
or replacing a fuse, it’s
important to use the right
fuse for the appliance
to make sure the fuse
doesn’t overheat.
Check the manual or
look for a sticker on the
appliance to find out
its wattage and then
use the correct fuse:
• for appliances up to 700
watts, use a 3 amp fuse
• for appliances between
700 and 1,000 watts,
use a 5 amp fuse
• for appliances more
than 1,000 watts,
use a 13 amp fuse
Extension leads and
adaptors have a limit on
how many amps they
can take, so be careful
not to overload them, to
reduce the risk of fire.
Dealing with an
electrical fire
If there is an electrical fire, pull
the plug out, or switch off
the power at the fuse box - if
it’s safe to do so. Sometimes this
can stop the fire immediately.
Never use water on an
electrical fire, and don’t take
any risks with your safety - get
out, stay out and call 999.
