Technical information 

Film Duplicating 

To duplicate a film in your darkroom, using the Universal Duplicator you 

will need an original film (to be duplicated), unexposed duplicating film, 

and your Rinn duplicator. 

To duplicate a film in the Mini-Ray duplicator, in either a darkroom, the 

daylight loader of an automatic processor or in a Rinn Chairside 

Darkroom you will need an original film (to be duplicated), an unexposed 

piece of duplicating film, and your Mini-Ray duplicator: 

1. Prepare your darkroom, daylight loader or Chairside Darkroom. 

2. With mode switch on ‘view’, position films to be duplicated on 

the plate, raised dots facing down. 

3. Set the mode switch to ‘Duplicate’. 

4. Press the black button on the side of the unit once. The Mini-Ray 

comes pre-set to expose between 6 and 8 seconds. Do not hold down 

the button. 

5. When the light goes off, your new duplicate is ready to process. 

Troubleshooting 

- Duplicating film is the opposite of regular film in exposure time. If your 

duplicate is too light, decrease the exposure time. If your duplicate is 

too dark, increase the exposure time. 

- Films that appear hazy could be caused by: expired film, variable 

developing temperature, insufficient fixation, or inappropriate 

safelighting. 

- Films that appear black could be caused by: an inactive duplicating 

bulb, starter or timer; using X-ray film instead of duplicating film; 

placing duplicate accidentally in fixer before developer; or expired 

duplicating film. 

- To replace a bulb in a Slimline or Universal duplicator, the glass plate 

must first be removed. Then unscrew and remove the white diffuser 

plate from the body. The bulbs are now accessible - the long, black 

tube is the UV bulb (part number R53-3203) and the red Christmas 

tree-shaped bulb is the safelight for viewing (R53-3201). 

- The Mini-Ray Duplicator runs on a 9V Alkaline battery. 

If your duplicates become inconsistent, replace the battery.

Chairside Darkroom 

For complete details on the use of the Rinn Chairside Darkrooms, please 

see the instruction manual that accompanies each unit. 

Processing Film in the Chairside Darkroom 

For successful developing of your radiograph, you will need: the 

Rinn Chairside Darkroom (R53-0102) or Mini-Darkroom (R53-0108), 

Developer and Fixer, and your undeveloped film. 

1. Fill the 8oz. beakers with appropriate chemistry or water (marked on 

inside of unit). Place all needed items inside the Chairside and close 

the light filter top. 

2. Place your arms through the sleeves on the front of the unit. 

Unwrap the undeveloped film and place the film on a processing 

hanger (included). 

3. Dip the film into the developer beaker for 10 to 15 seconds. 

Then rinse in the water and place in the fixer for 10 to 15 seconds. 

Wash the film thoroughly. For archival quality radiographs, the film 

must be returned to the fixer for at least 4 minutes, and then rinsed in 

running water for 30 seconds.

Assembling your XCP-DS Instruments 

The XCP-DS features standardised components and an easy-to-follow colour coding system to make 

assembly simple. There are baskets (holders) for horizontal and vertical X-rays and for each size 

sensor a manufacturer provides. 

1, Pull a protective sleeve over the sensor and stretch it out along the cable. It is usually helpful to 

twist the sleeve around the cable to

keep it in place. 

2. Slip one edge of the sensor into the 

basket (A) and gently pull the cable 

through the base. Be sure the flat 

surface of the sensor faces the 

gripping edges and the back surface 

sits in the ‘window’ of the basket. 

3. Snap the second edge of the basket 

over the sensor. (B) 

4. Slide the basket into the bite-piece. (C) 

5. Attach the arm and ring. For posterior and endo radiographs, which side of the bite-piece the arm 

is inserted into is determined by the area to be radiographed. A correctly assembled instrument will 

have the sensor centred when viewed through the ring.

Rinn XCP ® Instrumentation 

The XCP (Extension Cone Paralleling) technique 

produces radiographs with minimal distortion 

and presents the objects being radiographed in 

their true anatomical relationship and size. 

- A long cone, or PID (position indicating 

device), of 12-16” should be used for the 

most accurate radiographs 

- To position the film parallel to the tooth and 

without distortion, the film holder and film 

should be moved away from the tooth being 

radiographed, into the centre of the mouth 

Helpful Hints 

Follow these tips for patient comfort and 

operator success. 

- When positioning the PID (cone), make sure 

it is parallel and flush to the metal arm and 

flush with the aiming ring of the XCP. 

The ring does not attach to the PID; it merely 

helps align it 

- Instruct the patient to close slowly when 

placing a film holder. 

This allows musculature to relax and the 

patient will find the positioning more 

comfortable 

- For patient comfort, corners of film packet 

may be softened by slightly rolling edges; but 

creasing or bending a film packet may cause 

cracking of the emulsion and distort the 

image. 

If necessary, use a smaller film to ease 

placement 

- Place all films in the bite-blocks with the dot 

on the film toward the occlusal or incisal 

edges, to make mounting consistent and to 

prevent the dot from interfering with 

diagnosis 

Taking Care of Rinn XCP 

instruments 

Rinn XCP instruments are designed to be used 

in a steam autoclave. Other forms of 

sterilisation are not recommended. 

Plastic Bite-Blocks and Aiming Rings 

The plastic pieces are porous and have a 

limited life. It is possible they will absorb the 

chemicals used in sterilisation and react to 

temperature variation. Your plastic pieces 

should be replaced periodically. 

- NEVER bleach your plastic pieces. 

Serious harm could occur to a patient or 

office staff from these fumes upon 

sterilisation or use 

- Always disassemble the arm from the aiming 

rings and bite-blocks. Because metal and 

plastic react differently to temperature 

changes, expansion and contraction of the 

plastic around the metal arm may cause 

permanent damage 

- The temperature in the autoclave should 

never exceed 270˚ F (132˚ C) 

- Do not use ultrasonic cleaners or cold 

sterilising solutions before or instead of the 

steam autoclave process 

Stainless Steel Aiming Arms 

- Always disassemble the arms and block in a 

straight or parallel motion. Unusual pressure 

may damage the arm 

- When sterilising, always disassemble the arm 

from the block and the ring. Do not bag the 

arm with the ring or bite-block 

XCP Endodontic Instrument/ 

EndoRay II ® Film Holder 

- The whole EndoRay II and parts of the XCP 

Endodontic Instrument are manufactured 

from a porous plastic material and have a 

limited life. They must be replaced 

periodically 

- For a longer-lasting instrument, always 

disassemble the three pieces before 

sterilising 

- The instruments should be sterilised in a 

steam autoclave. 

Other methods of sterilisation are not 

recommended 

Recommended Cleaning and 

Sterilisation Procedure 

1. Disassemble instrument(s). 

2. Remove debris from components with hot 

water and soap or mild detergent. 

3. Load instrument(s) into the autoclave and 

cycle per autoclave manufacturer’s 

instructions (sterilisation conditions are listed 

below). Do not exceed 270˚ F (132˚ C).

Bite-wing Radiographs 

To avoid overlapping of the contact areas, it is 

recommended that the film be positioned 

perpendicular to the 

interproximal spaces. 

To place the film holder, 

the bite-block rests on 

the same arch as the 

teeth being 

radiographed. 

Use the line on the bite 

surface to help align the 

interproximal spaces. 

Edentulous Technique 

The XCP instruments can be used in a partially 

or totally edentulous mouth by substituting a 

cotton roll for the space normally occupied by 

the crowns of the missing teeth. 

The thickness of the cotton rolls, or similar 

radiolucent material, will determine the amount 

of film coverage of the edentulous ridges. 

The XCP Endodontic Instrument and the 

EndoRay II, employ the paralleling technique, fit 

over endodontic files, rubber dams and clamps, 

and are securely held by the patient’s bite. 

To assemble and use, follow these simple 

instructions: 

- With a film centred 

in the basket 

(see illustration), place 

the assembly over the 

tooth (with files and 

clamp) and rest it on 

adjacent teeth. 

If you are using a rubber dam, release the 

top or bottom half from the frame. 

There is no need to completely remove the 

rubber dam and frame. The film should be 

adjacent to the tooth being radiographed and 

behind the rubber dam. The patient should 

then bite lightly until the instrument is 

secure.
