<strong>Needham</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> Bullying Prevention and Intervention Plan<br />
B. Development of the Bullying Prevention Plan<br />
An Anti-Bullying Steering Committee was formed in September. This Plan has<br />
been developed in the period between September and December 2010, and the<br />
process involved significant parent, student, and community input and planning.<br />

The Anti-Bullying Steering Group reviewed the requirements of the new law and<br />
the current status of practices in the <strong>Needham</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> (NPS) regarding<br />
anti-bullying curriculum, professional development, student handbooks,<br />
procedures, and special education provisions. The Anti-Bullying Steering Group<br />
members and the district’s Principals led the following activities:<br />
• Drafted a proposed School Committee Policy (adopted October 2010)<br />
which includes incident reporting and investigation procedure for all staff<br />
and parents; shared the proposed policy broadly with parents, students,<br />
staff, and the community for input and comment.<br />
• Updated Handbook documents outlining process, procedures and<br />
disciplinary responses to bullying, cyber-bullying and retaliation.<br />
• Reviewed draft Handbook bullying policies and procedures at each<br />
building’s School Council meeting.<br />
• Developed reporting, investigation and follow-up procedures and forms.<br />
• Organized faculty meeting presentations of definitions, reporting<br />
requirements and staff responsibilities.<br />
• Met with <strong>Needham</strong>’s Director of Youth Services to compile community<br />
resource list.<br />
• Organized a Community Bullying Forum (November 2010) at which 60<br />
parents, students and community members provided input through small<br />
focus group discussions.<br />
• Met with Parent Teacher Council presidents and Special Education Parent<br />
Advisory Council (SEPAC) representatives to identify parent and family<br />
educational opportunities.<br />
• Developed process for addressing student needs at special education team<br />
meetings.<br />
