The<br />
<strong>Girls</strong> <strong>Active</strong><br />
<strong>Programme</strong><br />
on their needs through facilitating meetings<br />
with them.<br />
• Link with the SPHE programme - girls offered<br />
the <strong>Girls</strong> <strong>Active</strong> programme must have a<br />
timetabled SPHE class. Include a section on<br />
‘Being <strong>Active</strong>’ with participating girls in their<br />
SPHE classes.<br />
• Organise activities outside of normal PE <strong>and</strong><br />
curriculum time.<br />
• Release the co-ordinating teacher to<br />
attend training <strong>and</strong> to recruit girls into the<br />
programme.<br />
• Deliver the programme throughout the school<br />
year (a minimum of 3 activities over a total of<br />
15 weeks).<br />
• Co-ordinating teacher <strong>and</strong> a number of the<br />
girls meet with the project support personnel<br />
to feed back on the programme through school<br />
support visits.<br />
• Inform parents of their daughter’s participation<br />
in the programme.<br />
• Make a financial contribution to the programme<br />
that is consistent with school policy regarding<br />
participation in school sport <strong>and</strong> recreation.<br />
• Be willing to sustain the programme given a<br />
positive response by the girls.<br />
• Be open to providing yearly information on<br />
participation rates, feedback from the girls on<br />
their experience <strong>and</strong> feedback from principals.<br />
• Training for the co-ordinator of the programme.<br />
• Ongoing support, information <strong>and</strong> networking<br />
opportunities.<br />
• School visits <strong>and</strong> phone backup from support<br />
personnel each year.<br />
• A review of the initiative <strong>and</strong> feedback to<br />
participating schools (principals are provided<br />
with an update on the programme at the yearly<br />
principals’ SPHE meeting).<br />

during its first two phases are provided in<br />
Appendix A.<br />
Schools are selected for participation on the <strong>Girls</strong><br />
<strong>Active</strong> programme based on the following criteria:<br />
• The rationale provided is consistent with the<br />
principles of the programme.<br />
• There is a geographical spread.<br />
• There is evidence of commitment to the SPHE<br />
programme.<br />
Participating schools are awarded funding to cover<br />
the cost of an outside instructor/ tutor, training for a<br />
staff member in a particular activity <strong>and</strong> equipment<br />
required for delivery of the activity 13 . <strong>Programme</strong><br />
support agencies also agreed to provide:<br />
