Working with Colleagues
Being Considered for Authorship
To be considered for authorship, a colleague must -- in a cumulative
sense -- make a professional contribution to the project that:
is creative and intellectual in nature
is integral to completion of the paper
makes a conceptual or substantive contribution to the work
Examples:
developing the research design
writing portions of the manuscript
integrating diverse theoretical perspectives
developing new conceptual models
designing assessments
contributing to data analysis decisions
interpreting results
[Bridgewater, et al, 1981; Spiegal & Keith-Spiegal, 1970]
NOTE:
Fulfillment of one or two of the professional tasks essential to
the completion of the collaborative publication does not necessarily
justify authorship. Neither does the amount of time spent on the
project justify authorship. All participants must decide what
COMBINATION OF TASKS warrants a given level of authorship credit,
if any at all.
