The Dangerous Act
of Worship
by Mark Labberton
Too often worship has become a
place of safety and complacency,
a narrowly private experience in
which solitary individuals only
express their personal adoration.
Even when we gather corporately,
we often close our eyes to those
around us, focusing on God but
ignoring our neighbor. But true
biblical worship does not merely
point us upward--it should turn us
outward as well.
From beginning to end, worship
must pursue justice and seek
righteousness, translating into
transformed lives that care for the
poor and the oppressed. Labberton
shows how to move beyond
the comfort of safe worship to
authentic worship that is awake
to the needs of the world.
Where everyone’s welcome, nobody’s perfect, and anything is possible.
Today in Worship, MARCH 21, 2010
This morning, Dr. Vic Pentz will preach at 8:45, 10:00 and 11:15 a.m. as we
continue our sermon series Hot Topics in the Corinthian Letters. The scripture
for today’s sermon, “Let’s Call A Truce In The Worship Wars” is I Corinthians 14.
At the 8:45, 10:00, 11:05 and 11:15 services, we celebrate the sacrament of
baptism. Baptism of infants is one way we look to the future. As we welcome
these children into our fellowship, we also pledge that we will nurture their faith
trusting that they will one day profess their own faith in Jesus Christ.
today is the FIFTH sunday in lent
A 40-day journey toward the cross that culminates in the celebration of Christ’s
resurrection. Lent is a prayerful season. Throughout Lent we pay attention to our lives
and the particular demands we face as we seek to walk daily with Jesus. We need help
doing this. Today, we join with those first disciples in asking Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray.”
Connect With Our Community
Come down to “Take 10” in the Williams Center immediately after the service.
You’ll find coffee, lemonade and a cookie waiting.
As we prepare to worship we ask that all cell phones and beepers be turned off and that food and
drinks remain outside the Sanctuary. Parents, we want this time of worship to be a meaningful
experience for you. If, during the service, your child needs attention, the Parlor (Room 3319)
is available to you. The room is equipped with comfortable furniture and closed-circuit TV so
you can continue to participate in the worship service while tending to the needs of your child.
Welcome to worship!
If you are reading this
you are holding our
worship “bulletin”
in your hands. This
sets forth the content
and order of today’s
worship service.
The situation in
Corinth was very
different – unruly
and out of control.
What makes a
worship service true
worship We’ll look
to Paul’s letter for
some answers today.
Based on Psalm 103,
Praise, My Soul, the
King of Heaven offers
us multiple reasons
to praise God.
Which lines resonate
with you How have
you been ransomed,
healed, restored,
forgiven How has
the Father tended
you and spared you
For what blessings
do you praise God
this morning
Prayer of Confession
Merciful God, week after week you gather us to this place
of worship and invite us to enter your presence with singing
and joy. In the words of Isaiah, we often honor you with
our lips while our hearts remain far from you. Confusing
worship with entertainment, we are passive observers rather
than thoughtful participants. Forgive us for our distant
hearts and our preoccupied minds. Help us to worship you
in spirit and truth, with mind and heart. We worship you
even now, giving thanks for your mercy and love as we
continue our confession in silence…
Family Life: Building and Strengthening
Healthy Family Bonds
Our families are often the most influential
people in our lives, from the families in
which we were raised to the families we
establish as adults. While the influence
can range from healthy to unhealthy, it
is God’s plan that families nurture their
members and provide a reflection of
God’s love for each person. Let’s talk
about the common issues we face as
we navigate family relationships as well
as suggestions for strengthening our
relationships with those we love.
“Faith, Hope and Love: A Study
For Couples Facing Infertility”
Sundays at 10:00 a.m. in Room 4309,
March 14th to April 25th.
This six week Bible study explores how
Biblical couples dealt with infertility issues
and how to apply their stories to couples
today. The class discusses and experiences
lessons from the newly published book
Pregnant with Hope, by Susan Radulovacki.
This dynamic book captures 10 inspiring
stories combined with Biblical lessons,
featuring couples who have openly shared
their stories to help shine a light on an
emotional and challenging journey. An
estimated one-in-six American couples
of child bearing age experience infertility,
including couples who already have been
blessed with a child.
Come to discuss various topics including
adoption, meet alumni and special guests
and grow in faith together. We welcome
couples within and beyond our church
family to join us.
