WESTERN REGION EMERALD MOMENTUM YOUTH CAMP 2011 The next day was a day full of outdoor adventures with the high ropes and the flying fox which pushed some of the campers to face their fear of heights. Participants were pushed to their limits but were able to set their own goals and achieve them. One participant said “It was a challenge but was the best feeling to achieve the goal that I set”. There was a lot of laughter with participants doing the splits, swinging upside down and some great facial expressions. The participants all worked well together, learnt to trust each other and learnt communication skills. That afternoon they took on some team building exercises from the pipe line to the spider web which was a great time for these young people to build on their skills. Night time came and so did the stories around the camp fire which added some entertainment for all. After watching a movie it was off to bed or so we thought so…….sleep at this stage soon become something that we had forgotten about. The last day arrived and it was time to do some cleaning and packing up which all campers helped with. Once done the day was filled with presenters from around the Highlands. Presentations from Department of Communities – Child Safety, Lifeline Coral Coast, Domestic Violence Service of Central Queensland, MRAEL, Get Set for Work, Central Queensland Rural Division of General Practice, Central Highlands Regional Council and the Queensland Police Service. These presentations helped young people to be able to gain skills that they would be able to use within their lives, employment, home and school. These skills help the young person to be empowered, engaged and encouraged. “I have new skills and a better understanding of what a healthy relationship looks like now and also a great understanding of different types of violence” said a participant. To finish off the weekend we had a presentations afternoon with presentations made to all participants and mentors finishing with a slideshow of the weekend. This was a great camp had by all participants and mentors. The next camp is on the 22 nd – 24 th July which is targeting years 8 – 12‟s. 28
WESTERN REGION EMERALD Below are some reflections from some staff that attended the Momentum Youth Camp as mentors. “It is always wonderful to see the young people having fun at the camp, making new friends from other schools and stepping out of their comfort zone in the adventurebased activities. In the second camp, I appreciated very much for their effort in cleaning up the cabin, kitchen, toilet and entertainment room. I look forward to the next camp coming” – Roland Chan “It was great to see all the young people coming together and connecting with each other and building new friendships. Being able to support them to be able to set their goals and to achieve them while, pushing through some of their fears and also gaining new skills that will help them throughout their lives. Receiving phone calls the next week from parents thanking Anglicare for the camp and the difference we are making, adds to the reason these camps are being provided” – Hayley Gardner “As this was my first Momentum Camp it was a positive and fun experience. I was able to see young people from around the Central Highlands that may not have connected otherwise to come together to overcome challenges and new experiences in a supported environment. I was able to see young people from when they first arrived to when they left making new friendships and accomplishing goals. The guest speakers also gave opportunities for young people to reflect on personal experiences in their lives in a supportive environment and make links with other community workers.
