NATIONAL YOUTH WEEK 2011
National Youth Week was held 1 st to 9 th
of April to celebrate young people age 12
to 25. In the Central Highlands there
were many free events held such as
Blackwater :Movie Marathon, Capella
:Arts Council performance and Breakfast
Clubs in High Schools with the Main
event the „Y-Carnival‟ an Alcohol and
Drug free event held at the Emerald
Skate Park on Saturday 9 th of April.
There were free buses from Capella,
Teiri, Blackwater and Springsure which
brought other young people from the
region to celebrate National Youth Week.
The Y-Carnival commenced at 3pm with
free rides, lots of youth engaging stalls
from community organisations and an
interactive youth forum was also
conducted to find out the needs for
young people in the region.
The Y-Carnival hosted many events such
as Mini-Cook which is similar to the
popular channel 10 show Master Chief in
which we had 3 local judges a local
Kitchen business owner, a Chef and
Woolworths Manager who had the hard
task to judge 2 different cook offs to
become this year Mini Cook and won
prizes worth $100.
The Y-Factor is similar to popular
channel 7 show X-Factor in which and
young person with any talent can
showcase
them and 3 Local judges decided on who
has the Y-Factor. The three judges were
NRL Legend Stephen Bell, Hot FM Radio
Manager and Local LGBT Police Officer
who had the tough task of finding the inner
in which was young person from
Springsure who wrote, sang and played
guitar and won Prize worth $150
Skate Display had many gasping their
breath as local young people use scooters,
BMX and skate boards to entertain the
crowd with jumps, 180 turns and even back
flips.
The Mob Dance with collaboration from
young people over the Central Highlands
Region had the crowd rubbing their heads
when they preformed. Mob Dance is a
craze on the popular You Tube Website in
which a group of people with music just
start dancing in a public place. The
Emerald State High School created the
performance and the Youth Development
Officer‟s taught young people over the
region so that this performance would one
to remember. This will be uploaded on to
the Youth Tube Channel in the near future.
Anglicare Momentum Youth Leaders and
the All Abilities Program were involved in
the Y-Carnival by running many youth
games and activities with lots of young
people joining in through out the day.
The Y-Carnival finished at 8pm with young
people having a fun afternoon of fun,
interactive games, access to youth
information in our region and also to be
involved in the Youth Forum. It was a
fantastic week which had over 1000
community members come to help
Celebrate National Youth Week in the
Central Highlands Region to recognise how
valued young people are in our community.
