<strong>Ormoc</strong> <strong>City</strong> has done it again!<br />

For the fourth time in the row<br />
vegetable producers in <strong>Ormoc</strong> <strong>City</strong> bag<br />
the most outst<strong>and</strong>ing vegetable farmer<br />
award conducted by Visayas State<br />
University. Mr. Amelito C. Aragon,<br />
from Brgy. Curva this city, astonished<br />
the group <strong>of</strong> evaluators from VSU<br />
chaired by Pr<strong>of</strong>. Efren B. Saz with<br />
his method <strong>of</strong> producing vegetable<br />
using organic fertilizer (vermin<br />
cast) <strong>and</strong> other cultural management<br />
which is environment friendly <strong>and</strong><br />
economically sound. His organized<br />
<strong>and</strong> complete farm records help him<br />
come up a sound farm management.<br />
It is in this that Mr. Aragon outscored<br />
other contender. The finalists <strong>of</strong> this<br />
category were Mr. Dante Nasario <strong>and</strong><br />
Fidel Cabale <strong>of</strong> Brgy. Cabintan <strong>and</strong><br />
Bagong respectively. The three are<br />
members <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Ormoc</strong> Federation <strong>of</strong><br />
Vegeable Producers, Inc.<br />
On the other h<strong>and</strong>, the search<br />
for the Outst<strong>and</strong>ing Farmer-<br />
Entrepreneur was won by Mr. Juan<br />
Gilbert E. Vertulfo, closely trailed<br />
by our own Brgy. Valencia Chairman<br />
Hon. Alfredo Roble. The awarding<br />
ceremony was held at the Convention<br />
The Four (4) days surgery <strong>and</strong><br />
operation conducted by Operation<br />
Smile Foundation at the <strong>Ormoc</strong> District<br />
Hospital was very successful as they<br />
were able to operate 48 children with<br />
cleft lip <strong>and</strong> cleft palate with eight<br />
other patients being assessed for a<br />
substitute palate for a total <strong>of</strong> 56.<br />
The four day operation <strong>and</strong><br />
surgery was a joint project <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Operation Smile Foundation, the<br />
Local <strong>Government</strong> Unit headed by<br />
Mayor Eric C. Codilla <strong>and</strong> Vice Mayor<br />
Nepomuceno P. Aparis, St. Stephens<br />
Mission Outreach Foundation, <strong>Ormoc</strong><br />
District Hospital <strong>and</strong> Operation Smile<br />
Foundation.<br />

highlight event <strong>of</strong> the Farmers’ <strong>and</strong> Other activities/event during the<br />
Fisherfolk Day during the university’s celebration were: Indigay sa Abot,<br />
87 th anniversary celebration. Farmers’ Parade, Farmers’ Forum,<br />
<strong>Ormoc</strong> <strong>City</strong> thru Research, PO’s, Viewing <strong>of</strong> Exhibits, Synposium on<br />
<strong>and</strong> Marketing Division <strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong> Science & Technology Business<br />
Agricultural Services Office put Initiatives <strong>and</strong> Livelihood Caravan<br />
up a booth where <strong>City</strong>’s products <strong>and</strong> the Dulan Pinoy/Farm Skills<br />
Competition.<br />

56 children benefits from “Operation Smile”<br />
Before operation<br />
day activity. He said that LGU will<br />
spend for the accommodation <strong>and</strong><br />
transportation <strong>of</strong> the Operation Smile<br />
personnel from Manila to the city<br />
vice versa. While the <strong>Ormoc</strong> District<br />
Hospital will cater the operation/<br />
surgery <strong>and</strong> the St. Stephens Mission<br />
Outreach Foundation are trusted to<br />
listing <strong>of</strong> the patients.<br />
Luz D. Cuesta, <strong>of</strong> the St. Stephens<br />
Mission Outreach Foundation based<br />
in Brgy. Maticaa said that they had<br />
already listed 87 patients as the<br />
operation started last Aug. 23 <strong>and</strong><br />
the list is still growing. But she said,<br />
those that were on the list are still<br />
subject for screening by the Operation<br />
Smile Foundation. She added that<br />
they are accepting patients not only<br />
from <strong>Ormoc</strong> <strong>City</strong> but anybody whose<br />
children has cleft lip <strong>and</strong> cleft palate<br />
problem.<br />
After operation<br />
Mayor Beboy Codilla <strong>and</strong> <strong>City</strong> Councilor Payling Omega talked to the<br />
guardians <strong>of</strong> the patients with cleft palate.<br />
<strong>City</strong> Mayor Eric C. Codilla in a<br />

expressed gratitude for conducting<br />
their project here. He told them that<br />
he has been hoping that such activity<br />
will be held here since he assumed<br />
<strong>of</strong>fice in 2004 <strong>and</strong> he was so thankful<br />
that it happened before his term ended.<br />

The mayor also expressed gratitude to St. Stephens Mission Outreach<br />
all the people who made the project Foundation, the <strong>Ormoc</strong> District<br />
possible.<br />
Pediatric Intensivist Dr. Arm<strong>and</strong>o<br />
Sayao M.D <strong>of</strong> the Operation Smile<br />
Foundation said that they started<br />
to operate five children during the<br />
first day <strong>of</strong> their operation here at<br />
the <strong>Ormoc</strong> District Hospital. It was<br />
Hospital under Dr. Boboy Jervoso,<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>City</strong> Mayor Eric C. Codilla Vice<br />
Mayor Nepomuceno P. Aparis <strong>and</strong><br />
the rest <strong>of</strong> the city council for their<br />
warm acceptance. Dr. Sayao revealed<br />
that their next mission will be done in<br />
November this year at Makati <strong>City</strong>.<br />
