The conference entitled “Question<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Transitional</strong> Dynamics <strong>in</strong> Re-def<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>Cultural</strong><br />
Identities <strong>in</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>astern Europe” was held on 15 and 16 January 2011 <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> CityHotel<br />
<strong>in</strong> Ljubljana, Slovenia. The conference was organized by <strong>the</strong> Peace Institute as part of<br />
<strong>the</strong> project f<strong>in</strong>anced by <strong>the</strong> Austrian Science and Research Liaison Office Ljubljana on<br />
behalf of <strong>the</strong> Austrian Federal M<strong>in</strong>istry of Science and Research. Toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> Peace<br />
Institute, <strong>the</strong> partners of <strong>the</strong> project are <strong>the</strong> Institute for International Relations <strong>in</strong> Zagreb,<br />
Croatia, <strong>the</strong> University of Vienna, Austria, and <strong>the</strong> University of Arts <strong>in</strong> Belgrade, Serbia.<br />
The event ga<strong>the</strong>red toge<strong>the</strong>r 30 participants from partner and o<strong>the</strong>r research <strong>in</strong>stitutions<br />
<strong>in</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>astern Europe, and provided an excellent platform for an <strong>in</strong>tense discussion of<br />
<strong>the</strong> case studies prepared by <strong>the</strong> project partners for this conference.<br />
The conference was opened with a welcome speech by Lev Kreft, <strong>the</strong> director of<br />
<strong>the</strong> Peace Institute, who highlighted <strong>the</strong> chang<strong>in</strong>g nature of cultural identities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Sou<strong>the</strong>ast European region. Follow<strong>in</strong>g his speech <strong>the</strong> conference work began with <strong>the</strong><br />
first panel that was devoted to “<strong>Identity</strong> construction <strong>in</strong> an economic and historical<br />
perspective”, chaired by Aldo Milohnić from <strong>the</strong> Peace Institute. The first speakers were<br />
Andrea Komlosy and Hannes Hofbauer from <strong>the</strong> University of Vienna who presented<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir paper entitled “<strong>Identity</strong> construction <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Balkan region – Austrian <strong>in</strong>terests<br />
and <strong>in</strong>volvements <strong>in</strong> a historical perspective”. Their presentation consisted of two parts:<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first part Hannes Hofbauer gave a historical outl<strong>in</strong>e of Austrian <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Balkan region, while <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> second part Andrea Komlosy gave fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>sights that<br />
