Culture of hits vs. culture of niches - cultural <strong>in</strong>dustries and processes of cultural identification <strong>in</strong> Croatia<br />

through which <strong>the</strong> public and commercial televisions provisionally comply with <strong>the</strong> quota<br />

required by <strong>the</strong> legislation. 16 What is needed is stronger regulation and control over how<br />

<strong>the</strong> legislation is followed <strong>in</strong> order to streng<strong>the</strong>n domestic production and to diversify<br />

programmes, especially <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> context of public television.<br />

As concerns <strong>the</strong> publish<strong>in</strong>g sector, when we look at <strong>the</strong> production level <strong>in</strong> 2008 <strong>in</strong><br />

Croatia, <strong>the</strong>re were 8,025 titles published (books and brochures <strong>in</strong>cluded). It has to be<br />

highlighted that <strong>the</strong> largest number of titles come from social sciences (23.9%), followed<br />

by literature (21%), and <strong>the</strong>n from applied sciences, medic<strong>in</strong>e and mechanics (13.3%), 17<br />

while <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g percentages are o<strong>the</strong>r publications. Out of <strong>the</strong>se published<br />

titles, one can only make a narrow analysis of <strong>the</strong> cultural consumption of citizens for<br />

fiction and non-fiction titles. To outl<strong>in</strong>e fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> level of cultural consumption <strong>in</strong> a<br />

specific time period, and for <strong>the</strong> area of publish<strong>in</strong>g, we shall analyse <strong>the</strong> data on sales <strong>in</strong><br />

Croatian bookstores accord<strong>in</strong>g to data from <strong>the</strong> Book Information System (KIS) for<br />

<strong>the</strong> period February-August 2007. 18 The list of top bestseller titles (with <strong>the</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>t list<br />

of fiction and non-fiction) shows <strong>the</strong> dom<strong>in</strong>ation of foreign authors: out of 26 titles<br />

that ended up on this list of top bestseller titles <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> analysed time period only 6 titles<br />

belonged to Croatian authors. Ano<strong>the</strong>r 20 titles that changed places on <strong>the</strong> list are works<br />

by 16 authors where some of <strong>the</strong>se authors have several titles. Authors from <strong>the</strong> Englishspeak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

world dom<strong>in</strong>ate, with 11 of <strong>the</strong>m com<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> US, Great Brita<strong>in</strong>and<br />

Ireland, 19 while o<strong>the</strong>rs come from Turkey, Ch<strong>in</strong>a, Brazil and Slovenia. 20 Most of <strong>the</strong> titles<br />

are fiction titles (18), while 8 titles are non-fiction – diet handbooks, self-help books,<br />

We shall be us<strong>in</strong>g data from <strong>the</strong> Book Information System (KIS) that covers data on popularity<br />

and sales of books. They <strong>in</strong>clude data from <strong>the</strong> broadest number of bookstores <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g 11<br />

bookstore houses (some of <strong>the</strong>m with more bookstore places and Internet sales). The data<br />

used here were <strong>the</strong> last published before KIS provisionally closed. As we were f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g<br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g this article KIS began <strong>the</strong>ir work aga<strong>in</strong>.<br />
