TOURISM & ATTRACTIONS O’Fallon is not only a great destination but also a fun side-trip. With great shopping, fun attractions and lots of tasty restaurants, O’Fallon is the perfect location for travelers to stop and stretch their legs for a while. Visitors and residents alike are fascinated with O’Fallon’s plush parks, magnifi cent homes and a friendly community. Many visitors find O’Fallon the place to stay. O’Fallon’s attractions run the gamut from historic preservations to modern, sports facilities. If you looking for it, you can probably fi nd it within our city limits. Below are a few of O’Fallon’s most frequented attractions. HISTORY Darius Heald Home Fort Zumwalt Park Built by Darius Heald, son of War of 1812 veteran Nathan Heald, this two-story brick house was completed circa 1885. In 2001, the City restored the house, which is open for tours by appointment. O’Fallon Historical Society Log Cabin Museum Civic Park Built in the 1870’s, the Historical Society Log Cabin contains a display of photographs, relics, memorabilia, rustic furniture and items from the old Wabash Railroad depot. The Museum is open for tours by appointment. O’Fallon Municipal Centre 100 North Main Street Formerly a novitiate for women entering the Sisters of the Most Precious Blood convent, and then later, a private high school and college, this 1930s building was purchased by the City and re-opened in 1999 as the O’Fallon Municipal Centre. Zumwalt’s Fort Fort Zumwalt Park The City purchased Fort Zumwalt State Park in 1978, acquiring 47.5 acres and the ruins of a frontier home fort, marked by a limestone chimney. Of the 30-plus forts in Missouri, Zumwalt’s Fort is the only War of 34 www.ofallonchamber.org
1812 fort site in Missouri owned by a municipal government. MEMORIALS 9-11 Memorials O’Fallon Municipal Centre WingHaven Boulevard Remnants of steel from the September 11, 2001 destruction of the World Trade Center in New York were used to construct two memorials in O’Fallon – one is located on the grounds of City Hall and the Spirit of Freedom monument is located in the median at WingHaven Boulevard and Highway 40-61. O’Fallon Veterans Memorial Walk 800 Belleau Creek Road The Veterans Memorial Walk, which opened in 2001, honors all U.S. Military, past and present. A platoon of cast bronze boots is positioned as though marching, and an eternal fl ame burns continuously. Omer J. Dames War Memorial Dames Park Among the fi rst in the nation to honor U.S. soldiers killed in the Vietnam War, the Omer J. Dames War Memorial, named for World War I veteran and Missouri legislator Omer Dames was erected by the O’Fallon Jaycees in 1969. RECREATION Alligator’s Creek Aquatic Center 403 Civic Park Drive | (636) 272-1626 Open from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend, Alligator’s Creek offers two swimming pools, water slides, a lazy river, vortex, a water playground for youngsters and a padded toddler pool.
