Utah Welcomes SDWT

The San Diego contingent
converged on the little town of
Orem, Utah recently to attend
the 34th annual Utah Woodturning
Symposium. One much
beloved activity was to be missing
this year; the pre-symposium
dinner at Mike Mahoney’s.
Mike and his wife Jenni recently
moved to California. We were
going to miss the tour of the
shop, the bowl basement, and
the favored Bowl-B-Q.
We still missed Mike’s old digs,
but this was a nice get together
and a fun way to start our Utah
adventure. Next year’s symposium
will be held May 15-17,
with the Craft Supplies Super
Wednesday event on May 14.
And hopefully another welcome
get together on May13th.
All was not lost though.
Through the efforts of Art
Bolic, Marshall Chapman, Sally
Ault and Mike Mahoney the
San Diego contingent met in
Mike’s favorite little park, Nelson
Grove Park, in Orem, close
to the Utah Valley University.
We met late in the afternoon of
May 14th, the day before the
Craft Supplies Super Wednesday
event. Several of the symposium
demonstrators and regulars
joined in…Gorst DuPlesis, Pat
and Peggy Bookey, Paul Chilton,
Clinton Biggs, Vic Wood , Ken
Wraight and others.
We had a great time listening
and sharing stories of life, turning,
and travel. The food was
catered by Mike’s favorite Mexican
restaurant. (and there was
a discrete selection of BYOB
adult beverages). We now know
why it was his favorite; the food
was excellent.
