San Diego Woodturners Page 15 June 2013
I was invited to demo my jewelry
at the Channel Islands Club
(in Ventura) May 25, 2013.
Tom Benham (program chair)
and his wife Andrea were gracious
hosts. They have a lovely
home in Santa Barbara. Tom
has a really nice shop (of course
we toured the shop) and had just
received a HUGE load of very
large pieces of beautiful black
acacia which I drooled over.
The club meets at a Middle
School which has a very complete
shop. The meetings are in a
classroom but they have access
to the tool room.
Each of their meetings feature a
show and tell. The club asked
me to be “guest critic” and review
their work.
I had my choice of a Powermatic
or a Delta like we use
for our classes. I picked the
Delta because it works fine for
my small stuff and it was much
easier for them to move into the
classroom.
They have a good AV setup with
a monitor for the demonstrator
which was really nice…I could
see what they were seeing and it
helped me put things in the right
place for the camera.
A number of spouses attended…
probably to make sure the
husbands learned so they could
make some jewelry for their
wives. I think there were about
45-50 in attendance.
It was a really nice group and
they had good questions. I
am looking forward to seeing
some nice pieces come from the
group. I anxiously await seeing
photos of their work.
