Oneway Coring System
Greetings All
Now that we have recovered
from the very busy month of
May, by gaining a few pounds,
putting a few miles on our pedometers,
and socializing nonstop
with wonderful friends,
let’s review…
A big thanks to Ken and Pat
Roth for sharing a beautiful
day in their wonderful home
for our annual picnic. Thanks
also to the team for arranging
the food, the contest, contributing
to the raffle, (58 pieces)
tors, sharing their successful
and often proprietary techniques
and approaches. The facilities
at Utah Valley University are so
impressive, and the Symposium
staff of volunteers was superb!
Sadly, this year was Dale Nish’s
last symposium (35 th ), as he
passed away on 25 May! He
will be greatly missed by woodturners
all over the world, as
well as by his wonderful family!
Farewell to a dear teacher and
friend, Dale --- RIP.
Looking forward to our annual
In Design in Wood, your pieces
will be showcased, with many
receiving many well-deserved
awards. Along with the strong
competition, we have the opportunity
to share our love of
woodturning with an interested
public! Bring your own tools,
and be prepared to describe
the fun you are having making
sawdust (i.e. Sawdstmkr) and
actually finishing with a neat
usable result.
This is also one of our fund
raising events for the Toys for
by offering tops, pens, etc. for
donations. See you there!!
AAW Newsletter Contest
Results
Dear Phil Stivers,
We are sorry to inform you that
your newsletter entry to the
American Association of Woodturner’s
Newsletter Contest was
not among those selected for an
award.
The selection process this
year was particularly difficult.
Many worthy applications were
submitted and we strongly
encourage you to resubmit your
newsletter in the upcoming year.
On behalf of the Member and
Chapter Committee I commend
you for the excellent work that
you are doing to keep your
members informed through your
newsletter. I sincerely thank
you for your participation in
this year’s contest. The Member
and Chapter Committee and
the AAW Board of Directors
wish you the best in your future
woodturning activities.
Hi All,
I enjoyed putting the club’s website together and was happy to contribute
my time and efforts to making our organization as good as possible
but after 5 years it’s time for a change.
Effective immediately, Dave Heiser will be taking over my position as
the SDWT webmaster.
Dave and I will be working together for the next month or so to make
the transition smooth. So for the next few months please contact both
of us with any requests you might have regarding the website. Once
Dave is comfortable I will step away.
Dave is more than capable of managing the site and I’m confident he
will do a great job.
Dave’s contact info is: davidheiserca@gmail.com and his phone number
is 760-703-3027.
Hello SDWT Members,
As your Treasurer and Membership
Chair, I am now your
one-stop, one-point-of-contact
for everything membership and
money: membership applications,
new memberships, renewals,
renewal dates, Membership
Cards, Name Badges, Member
Directory, your contact information,
addresses, phone numbers,
email addresses, photos …
anything to do with Membership
or money. Now I can’t blame
Ken Roth anymore for missing
applications, dues, or badges!
Along the way, I changed the
SDWT P.O. Box address, which
has been updated on the application
form and website, to a
location within walking distance
from my home. If you have the
old address written down in your
personal address book, please
change it to the new address.
Also, I changed the source of
the Membership Name Badges,
sharpened the logo, and made
the badges and names slightly
larger so that they are easier to
read, and selected a brighter Olive
color and texture finish.
If you want to
- join the San Diego Woodturners
- renew AAW and/or SDWT
membership
- check your AAW member
number or renewal date
- add your photo to the
SDWT Membership Directory
- obtain a new 2013 Membership
Card for local merchant
discounts
- order a Membership Name
Badge (wear it and receive 1
extra raffle ticket!)
- have an idea for our club
…
… please see the instructions at
the end of the newsletter, just
before the membership application,
or contact me at Leonard-
Badour@roadrunner.com.
Currently, your SDWT membership
renewal date is the same
as your AAW renewal date, no
matter when you joined SDWT.
When you receive an AAW
Journal with a renewal notice,
it’s also time to also renew your
SDWT membership.
It is time to update the Membership
Directory, so please check
your contact information and if
you need to update your information
or want to add a photo of
yourself, please send a similar
photo to those in the directory
with a neutral background, but
do not crop or size it, we will do
that for you.
(For further membership instructions,
see the instructions
just before the membership
application near the end of the
newsletter).
If you have any comments or
suggestions for Membership or
our club in general, please email
them to me.
Thanks!
In Memoriam: Dale Nish
Dale Nish passed away near
midnight on the 25th of May
from complications of a blod
clot in his left lung.
Dale was one of the world’s best
known woodturners and writers.
His three books (Creative Woodturning,
Artistic Woodturning,
and Master Woodturners) have
influenced a whole generation of
turners. His broad knowledge of
turning and more than 30 years
as a teacher make him a master
of most of the tools and techniques
used today.
Nish became interested in woodworking
while in high school
in Alberta, Canada. He pursued
woodworking into a teaching
career, eventually becoming a
professor at Brigham Young
University in Provo UT, where
he taught for 28 years, retiring
in 1995. A prolific writer, Dale
authored four benchmark books,
the most popular of which was
Creative Woodturning[1]. These
books served to inspire and
instruct aspiring woodturners, as
did his lectures and demonstrations
at universities, and many
of the leading arts and craft
schools.
As a result of this book, Nish
was asked to demonstrate and
lecture at various venues, primarily
in the United States. One
of the early venues was at a
symposium organized by Albert
LeCoff and his twin brother Alan
and held at the George School of
industrial Arts in Pennsylvania,
where Palmer Sharpless was a
teacher and supervisor
In the late 1970s, Dale developed
an interest in bowls turned
from flawed wood, especially
wormy ash, which has become
a signature piece. He appreciates
the Oriental ability to accept
and enjoy natural materials and
surfaces with serenity and satisfaction
not found frequently in
Western cultures. This approach
allows him to explore in his
works the shrinkage, cracking,
and insect damage.
During the 1980s and early
‘90s, Nish traveled extensively
and demonstrated in England,
Ireland, Canada, Norway, New
Zealand, Alaska, and many of
the lower forty-eight states. In
1993 he was awarded an honorary
lifetime membership in the
AAW.[2]
Dale was instrumental in starting
the renowned Utah Woodturning
Symposium in 1979, originally
called Symposium West ’79,
in Provo, Utah. Demonstrators
included Albert LeCoff, Frank E.
Cummings III, David Ellsworth,
Dale Nish, and Bob Stocksdale.
The symposium was renamed
the Utah Woodturning Symposium
and has been held every
year since. Nish directed the
Utah Woodturning Symposium
until 1988. Initially the workshops
and symposiums were
held at various times between
April and November. By 1985
the symposium had grown to the
point that it was beginning to
interfere significantly with the
regular semester classes at BYU.
As a result, the 1985 symposium,
which was initially
planned for fall semester, was
pushed into the early summer of
1986, when fewer students were
on campus and the facilities
were available without disrupting
so many classes. Since then
the symposium has been held in
May or June of each year.
The symposium has since continued
with Kip Christensen, a
great friend and a fellow faculty
member, from 1999 until 2007.
Following the 2007 symposium,
Nish and Christensen appointed
long time friend and symposium
supporter, Mike Mahoney to the
position of Director.[3]
In addition to Creative Woodturning,
Nish has also authored
Artistic Woodturning[4], Master
Woodturners[5], and Woodturning
with Ray Allen[6].
Dale’s wife Noreen passed away
September 6, 2011.

What’s Up and Coming in the Club
By Karen Freitas
June
In June Oskar Kirsten will be
showing us the ins and outs of
using the Oneway Coring System.
I went over to Mentor Oskar’s
house with Sally and we got a
quick class on how to use it and
I think there are many others out
there who have often wondered
just how to use a coring system
and this is a great opportunity to
learn.
July
Now July is a special month
for us in San Diego. We will be
having Graeme Priddle arriving
all the way from New Zealand
to give us the demo and 2
day class. He is heading up to
Orange County the weekend
after our so the class will be on
Sunday and Monday right after
the demo. He is going to conduct
a “Turn and Burn” class.
He walks us through the steps
to turn and them shows us many
different ways to embellish,
carve and burn a creative pattern
on the turning. He says it is a
perfect beginner to intermediate
class so let us know early if you
want in. Graeme’s web site has
many things that he specializes
in and also gives some examples
of what to expect in his classes.
http://graemepriddle.com.
August
Jack Boggio will be conducting
our August demo. He hails from
Fallbrook and started out as a
carver. He has since started turning
and he adds some beautiful
carving techniques to his turnings.
He has a web site (http://
www.timberstotreasures.com/index.
html) that you can check out
and see some of his work. He is
going to show us some interesting
Christmas Ornaments early
enough we might actually get
them done before Christmas.
Well maybe not me but some of
you should have them mastered
by then. He will show us how he
adds some simple (so he says)
carvings to the center of his
ornaments. I am looking forward
to seeing how he accomplishes
the holes to see inside the ornaments.
And I don’t mean he
makes a funnel like I make.
September
September will be our Tools and
Techniques demo. This is where
you get to try out a new technique
and learn from out Mentors.
We will have stations set up
both inside and outside (if it’s
not raining) to allow you some
hands-on training. You can try
out a new tool or learn how to
use a bottom of the bowl gouge.
It’s all up to you. We have the
stations set up and you take your
pick.
Our club has lots of opportunity
to learn how to create something
new or just increase your skills
in you hobby of choice. Come
on down to the meeting and see
what you can do with the knowledge.

SDWT Annual Picnic
by Pat Saunders
SDWT held its annual picnic at
Pat and Ken Roth’s lovely home
and garden on Saturday, May 11.
For those living near the coast,
the day started out very foggy,
causing consternation in some.
But by 9 a.m. when the first
volunteers arrived to start setting
up tents, tables, and liquid
refreshments, the sun was out
in full force. The multitude of
Pat’s flowers, looking lovely in
the glittering sunshine, watched
the humans start to wilt. Tents
for the diners and Hollow Form
Competition were erected. An
umbrella shaded the raffle donations
but as the sun shifted it
became obvious another was
needed to protect the wooden
objects. As true woodturners,
Jeff Neff and Leonard Badour
gave up their umbrella over the
lunch ticket & raffle ticket table
to protect the donated wooden
objects.
A multitude of Hollow Forms
were set up on two tables to
be judged. Most of us were
delighted not to be a judge and
have to decide whose was the
best turning of the morning. The
competition was quite close.
Oskar Kirsten, Phil Stivers and
Sally Ault came in 1st, 2nd, and
3rd, judged by Tom Edwards.
Tom Edwards explained the decision
making process. Oskar’s
entry was a very complicated
vessel displaying both handles
and feet turned from a single
piece of wood. Oskar assured
us it was a very limited edition,
unique in its class, a ‘one of a
kind’ and in the interest of his
mental health, would never be
attempted again. Phil’s Hollow
Form was of medium to large
size, thin walled and showing
both height and a centered maximum
diameter, balancing well
on its tiny foot. Sally’s vessel
was a lovely miniature hollow
form. A couple of centimeters
shorter and it could have been
a pendant in her jewelry collection.
As Tom commented, sometimes
it is more difficult to turn
an object in miniature than to
do a big piece. A hummingbird
would have found it impossible
to enter and crowded to occupy
her vessel.
Karen Freitas and Sally Ault
coordinated lunch from El Pollo
Loco. The food was delicious.
The desert table selections,
provided by enterprising individuals,
displayed an incredible,
bountiful collection of wonderful
confections. The only
healthy choice was a huge bowl
(turned, of course) filled with
ripe cherries. Many of us, attempting
to balance gluttony and
health piled plates with cookies,
brownies, pies, and candy which
(Continued on page 10)

San Diego Woodturners Page 10 June 2013
(Picnic - continued from page 9)
we counteracted with a huge
mound of cherries!
next year would be “our turn”.
A quick, rough estimate was that
besides having fun and redistributing
some interesting and/or
impressive items, the club raised
at least $1800.
After we were all in a sugar
stupor, the raffle began. Nan
Bushley, as she so diligently and
persuasively does, persuaded
friends, neighbors and business
acquaintances and possibly
strangers to purchase raffle
tickets to aide our club. She,
therefore, took home lots of
prizes for distribution to those
Finally, it was time to disassemble
tents, drop and load tables,
and gather up everyone’s various
belongings--chairs, plates,
Hollow Form entries, and new
winnings. The Roths were most
gracious welcoming us into their
midst, lending us their home for
the day, contributing suddenly
needed items from their own
kitchen. It was a large effort on
their part and is appreciated with
great pleasure.
who donated money at her urging.
Some club members had a
lots of luck and were awarded
multiple opportunities to select
from the tables. Some of us sat
and watched the lucky ones trot
back and forth from their chairs
to the winner’s rectangle, hoping

June Program:
The Oneway “Hisway” Coring System
by Oskar Kirsten
MULCH. That’s what good
wood turns to if you just remove
the center layer after cutting
layer. Imagine a big nice piece
of bowl wood with grain up the
wazoo and color to match. The
center of that goes away in chips
to a flower bed. But, now there
is a way to salvage that center
wood without the frustration of
the McNaughton Nightmare. I
know that from experience since
I have had two McNaughtons
over the years. I made lots of
niece bowls with unplanned
drain holes. The flowers I planted
in them liked them anyway.
Mike Mahoney can wiz us with
what he can do, but we mortals
have been saved by the OneWay.
So for the June demo I will try
to show how I am now a much
more calm person since I have
developed the confidence to
make several nested pieces out
of a single piece of that “special”
wood. The demo will include
the important set up and the options
it allows. There are ways
to avoid that bottom hole every
time. Really. Included will be
the methods of properly grabbing
the pieces for the methods
of nest progression. As time permits,
I will show how I changed
the stock OneWay mounting
plate to be able to do more that
hemispherical sections and see
the options.
Set of nested 4 pieces from a
Eucalyptus burl that I had for 10
years not wanting to McNaughton
Safari Park Wood!
By Dan White
What Does Safari Park and the
San Diego Wood Turners Have
in Common
Well, we have started a new adventure
with Safari Park in San
Diego. It seems that a new tiger
exhibit is under construction
and there was a need to remove
some trees. Two Monkey Puzzle
trees had to be cut down. Our
connection with the park is to
take the wood which we did on
March 2nd and turn bowls for
the donors of this worthwhile
project. Several million dollars
in donations will breathe life
into a new exhibit for the enjoyment
of the public.
bowls for the exhibit donors.
You too need to join with us
in turning bowls for this Safari
Park/San Diego Wood Turner
connection. The exhibit should
be finished in January and we
need your completed bowls
before that date (I will let you
know of the exact date when it
is determined). For your turning
efforts there is a piece of wood
for you and one for the bowl you
are turning for the cause.
Please see me at the wood area
for your wood. We need 20 or
more bowls so don’t be shy.
Some of you might want to even
turn a couple of bowls for the
park.
We hope to create some positive
press for the San Diego Wood
Turners and further our efforts in
encouraging others to appreciate
and collect pieces of turned
wood. There is also a good
possibility that this gesture on
our part will open the door for
possibly other wood at the park
or zoo as it becomes available.
to Safari Park this
past Saturday and
met with Catherine
Osborne, project superintendent,
to load
several trucks with
Monkey Puzzle wood
that had just been
fallen. The wood
was taken to the Nottingham
Center and
sealed/covered. We
took a piece or two
of the wood to begin
the process of turning
Upcoming CLASSES!
Mike Jackofsky classes
2 day bowl basics class $200
This is a class for turners at any
level. Mike will go over basic
bowl turning techniques, design,
tool handling, wood choice, how
to cut blanks, etc. Mike will
work with each turner at their
own level so this is an excellent
choice for those new to bowl
turning as well as those who just
need some improvement.
June 17-18 (class full)
June 19-20 (only a few spots
left)
If we have enough interest I will
try to talk Mike into an additional
class.
3 day Hollow Form class $300
This is a hollowing class. All
skill levels are OK but you
should have some bowl turning
experience. Mike will cover the
basics and will then work with
each turner at their own level.
You can bring any hollowing
tools you have and Mike will
help you with those. He will
also have some of his tools at the
class for you to try.
There is 1 space left in the
Mike Jackofsky 3 day class . If
enough people sign up we will
consider holding a second one
on July 30-Aug 1.
July 27-29
July 30-Aug 1 (TBD)
Graeme Priddle
2 day workshop $250
This is a chance to work with
an amazingly creative turner.
Graeme will show how to turn
a piece using multiple centers
and then show how to change
the surfaces using branding and
pyrography. It will be a fun
class that will move you out of
your rut.
July 21-22
Tom Edwards
We are looking into the possibility
of bringing Richard Raffan
to San Diego for some hands-on
classes the week before next
years Utah Symposium. Utah
will be May 15-17, 2014 (Super
Wednesday is the 14th and we
will have an evening party on
the 13th) so classes would probably
be held between May 6 and
11.
I need some feedback as to how
many members would be interested.
As most of you know
Richard is a legend in woodturning.
He is not traveling as
much as he used to so I would
like to take advantage of the
opportunity if we have enough
interest. He probably would not
be doing a demo since he was
here 2 years ago….just some
hands on workshops.
Class With Richard Raffan - 2014
shop would cost @ $275-300
and a 3 day would be @ $400-
$425 and would as usual include
wood and lunch.
Richard is more expensive
because he is worth it. This is
an opportunity to get up close
and personal instruction from
the best instructor I know (and
one of the nicest people you will
ever meet).
I have worked with him and
watched him a number of times
and I learn a lot more every time
about tool handling, design, etc.
Just as a comparison when Richard
teaches at Craft Supplies
each of 11 students pays $900
for 4 ½ days (plus transportation
to Provo, hotel and meals).
Our classes are a bargain. Only 8
people, close to home and lunch
I was invited to demo my jewelry
at the Channel Islands Club
(in Ventura) May 25, 2013.
Tom Benham (program chair)
and his wife Andrea were gracious
hosts. They have a lovely
home in Santa Barbara. Tom
has a really nice shop (of course
we toured the shop) and had just
received a HUGE load of very
large pieces of beautiful black
acacia which I drooled over.
The club meets at a Middle
School which has a very complete
shop. The meetings are in a
classroom but they have access
to the tool room.
Each of their meetings feature a
show and tell. The club asked
me to be “guest critic” and review
their work.
I had my choice of a Powermatic
or a Delta like we use
for our classes. I picked the
Delta because it works fine for
my small stuff and it was much
easier for them to move into the
classroom.
They have a good AV setup with
a monitor for the demonstrator
which was really nice…I could
see what they were seeing and it
helped me put things in the right
place for the camera.
A number of spouses attended…
probably to make sure the
husbands learned so they could
Sally Ault - Demonstrator
by Sally Ault
make some jewelry for their
wives. I think there were about
45-50 in attendance.
It was a really nice group and
they had good questions. I
am looking forward to seeing
some nice pieces come from the
group. I anxiously await seeing
photos of their work.

Classes Update
by Karen Freitas
Get ‘em while their HOT!!
There are some great classes
coming up and I think if you
have thought about it, you need
to save a few bucks and learn a
new skill. We all should learn
something new every year.
The first class coming is Joe
Fleming’s Air Brush class. Joe
will devote 2 days to just doing
the latest air brush techniques
and how to use is in your work
from the lathe. I am taking this
one to refine my skills for the
fall leaves I like to make inside
some of my bowls. I know Pete
Campbell uses it for his Fire
Bowls which I would like to incorporate
into my turnings. They
definitely enhance the appearance
if used correctly. I believe
there is one spot left and it could
be yours for only $100 per day.
The next class is Mike Jackofsky’s
bowl turning class. He uses
his skills at design and bowl
gouge finesse work to show
you how to shape the bowl and
get the least amount of tear out
possible. A good hollow form is
basically an enclosed bowl. If
you can’t use your bowl gouge
in the best orientation then all of
your work will suffer. Learn how
to pick a piece of wood for good
grain orientation and just what
you are looking for in a hollow
form blank. His bowl classes
will be for 2 days and are coming
up on June 17, 18 and June
19 and 20th. One class is full
and the other is almost there. If
you need some skilled practice
with the bowl gouge just give
Sally and email and she will sign
you up. Again all of this including
lunch is $100 per day.
Mike will be conducting a
hollowing advanced class on
2 separate occasions. His first
class is almost filled on July 27-
29. (An interest list is forming
for a second class on July 30 to
August 1.) If you’re interested in
putting those new design skills
from the bowl class to good use
you should definitely sign up
for the advanced class. Or if you
have done a few hollow forms
and want the secret to not going
through the bottom or the shoulder
then it’s a must to try it out.
It is $300 for all three days.
The travelling demonstrator we
have in July is Graeme Priddle.
He comes to us all the way from
New Zealand. (Just tell him he’s
got an Australian accent…he really
loves that☺) He is planning
a 2 day demo only on July 21
and 22. His turn and burn demo
consists of turning several different
items and all of the ways you
can embellish them. His techniques
can be used on bowls,
hollow forms, and boxes or just
about anything else you want to
turn. After you’ve turned a few
hundred bowls you will want to
dress them up and this is the guy
to show you how. He is an amazing
guy and tons of fun to work
with and I’m extremely sorry I
will have to miss his class but
a family trip to Portugal was
already in the works for me.
His class is a little more expensive
than some of our other
classes since he is coming from
such a great distance to get here.
It will cost $125 per day for
the 2 day class including lunch,
wood and burners to use.
On August 24th and 25th, we
have another class given by
our own Tom Edwards using
his resin techniques. I don’t
think there is a piece of wood
out there that Tom can’t figure
out something to make with it.
He even uses all of those pesky
little pieces we cut off our bowl
blanks and through in the corner
since they are so pretty. I know
many people wonder what could
they do with a piece of wood
with a bark inclusion or hole
going through the exact wrong
place. Tom can sho you how to
enhance that hole or make sure
the bark doesn’t come flying off
the lathe right into your face.
Have you ever wanted to turn
a pine cone He can show you
how. The cost of this 2 day class
is a bargain at $160. Give us a
call or email and we will sign
you right up.
(Continued on page 17)

San Diego Woodturners Page 17 June 2013
(Classes - continued from page 16)
The last class we have planned
is King Arthur Tools demonstrator
Maverick Jalliett. He
will be doing a 1 day class on
October 13. He may be able to
do a second class on the 14th if
there is sufficient early interest.
He is travelling out here to do
a demo on Saturday and a bowl
class without the use of a lathe
on Sunday. The way he does that
is with the King Arthur Lancelot
tool. This is similar to the
Proxon mini chainsaw tool. You
can take an unusual shaped piece
of burl cap that you could never
figure out how to use and carve
a beautiful bowl out of it. I have
added some photos of his latest
class and his biography to this
newsletter so you can see one
of the many uses for this tool.
They also have the Guinevere
sanding system which is simply
amazing. It is a flexible sanding
tool attached to a motor that will
accept many different sanders
to get into the smallest areas or
carvings.
Maverick can only accept 4
people in this class so there is
tons of one-on-one time for each
person. This will cost $100 for
the day including lunch.
Take advantage of the many opportunities
to learn new techniques
and new skills You’ll be
glad you did.
San Diego Woodturners Mentors
Our mentor program is one of the unique benefits of our club. Our mentors can help with basic to complex
turning and teach safety along the way. This is a great way to start out or hone your skills with complex
tasks taught by turners skilled in specific tasks. Our mentors are volunteers and are dedicated to sharing
information on all facets of woodturning.
Our mentors are matched one-on-one with members seeking instruction in specific or general topics. Mentors
have a variety of expertise and we attempt to match skill levels with applicants. Realizing that some
new turners may feel intimidated by more experienced turners, our club has a variety of skill levels within
the mentor group. Rest assured however, that all of our mentors are easy to work with. Most often the mentor
opens his/her shop to the applicant at a mutually agreed upon time and schedule. In addition to our oneon-one
mentoring sessions our club offers “open turning” after club meetings about three times each year.
Mentors are available at these sessions to provide basic instruction or answer specific questions on most any
subject.
So how does the mentoring program actually work The program is flexible but in general this is how it
works.
*All you need to do is call a mentor from the list and then discuss schedules and normally meet in the
mentor’s shop. You need to bring their own tools, face shield, sanding/finishing supplies and in some cases
wood to turn.
*If you do not have equipment this should be discussed with the mentor during first contact.
*There is no limit to the number of sessions so long as the mentor and you agree on the progress.
Contact a mentor directly to discuss your needs and desires A list of current Mentors their specialties is listed
on our website. Please feel free to contact me on my cell phone @ 619-384-3183 or my e-mail jneff1@
Turn Around For Vets (TAV) Update
By Tom Lightner
As most of you know, SDWT
has been sponsoring the Turn
Around for Vets (TAV) program
for some time. In fact, we are
going into our fourth year since
Nan Bushley, Ken Roth, Allen
Driver and others conceived
and then began a small program
at the Naval Medical Center
(NMC) San Diego. At that time
the mission was defined: to provide
woodturning as a means of
mental and physical therapy for
our Wounded Warriors. Further,
the program would be of no cost
to our Nations’ heroes nor to the
government.
In it’s infancy, the program at
NMC, championed by Ken Roth,
consisted of 5 Delta midi lathes
with stands, including one specially
modified for wheelchairs.
The equipment was stored in the
Armed Services YMCA offices
at the NMC and had to be transported
each week to the courtyard
near where the troops were
receiving their physical and
occupational therapy. SDWT
members provided the manpower
(our instructors!) to move
the equipment via elevators and
hallways-a very labor intensive
task to say the least! Weather
was always a concern and the
courtyard was also used for
other types of therapy causing
scheduling difficulties. Nonetheless,
the program was underway
with sessions once a month.
Shortly after the program began,
it became apparent that many of
our heroes had difficulty mastering
the use of conventional
woodturning chisels given the
nature of their injuries as well
as the time made available for
woodturning activity. It became
clear they must be able to complete
a simple project such as a
pen or bottle stopper in an hour
or less. At this point, we introduced
the use of Easy Wood
Tools (carbide tipped tools) and
found that the vets could master
their use quickly with minimal
instruction and supervision,
complete a product in the time
available, resulting in an almost
instantaneous feeling of accomplishment.
The therapeutic
affect of woodturning became
apparent as big smiles returned
to their faces, and at least temporarily,
relieved some of the pain
and stress of healing from their
injuries. And all of us were filled
with great joy from making such
a significant contribution to their
recovery. But the challenge of
conducting woodturning in the
courtyard continued.
Space is at a premium at NMCa
very large, multifunctional
hospital but hemmed in by Balboa
Park and a series of freeways.
However, after making an
urgent plea with the Commanding
Officer of NMC, space was
finally found where we could not
only store our lathes and equipment
but also use it as a “Woodturning
Center”. After moving
into the facility, we added more
Delta Midi lathes, up to five at
one point, had storage space for
wood and tools, and perhaps
most important, in an area easily
accessible by our warriors.
Three more lathes were modified
for wheelchairs. We were
able to expand our operation to
two days a week to best accommodate
patients schedules and
free time. We currently operate
the center every Wednesday
from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM but
remain flexible to the needs of
various treatment programs. Recently,
the number of wounded
admitted to the hospital has declined
significantly with the war
winding down in Afghanistan,
however a large number of vets
continue to come to NMC for
treatment. We also started offering
woodturning to the spouses
of the wounded, rather then have
them sit in waiting rooms watching
TV while their wounded
mate received treatment. This
turned out to be very popular!
We currently have 8 - 10 patients
each week visit our Woodturning
Center and some have advanced
to making small bowls and weed
pots. Five to eight volunteers
each week are needed to support
this program with Ken Roth as
Chairman.
As woodturning became more
popular and “the word” spread
through the Wounded Warrior
community, Nan Bushley and
a wounded Marine, Sgt Jesse
(Continued on page 19)

San Diego Woodturners Page 19 June 2013
(TAV - continued from page 18)
James, whom Nan had given
woodturning instruction, took
the initiative to start a program
at the Wounded Warrior Battalion,
Camp Pendleton. This unit
had recently moved to a new
facility built especially for the
treatment of the wounded. In
June 2012, a demo was held at
the facility. Almost immediately,
the Marines were “hooked” and
requested a weekly woodturning
session and provided suitable
space for storage of our equipment
as well as a woodturning
area on the patio of the main
barracks building. Demand continued
to grow and more lathes
and volunteers were added.
Currently, we have nine lathes
at Pendleton and just recently
started operating twice a week
on Tuesday and Thursday from
noon to 3:00 PM.
We are averaging about 15 warriors
each session making pens,
bottle stoppers, basting brushes,
etc. Again, some have acquired
skills to start making bowls,
small platters, etc. but pens continue
to be most popular.
A recent visit by the USMC
Inspector General hailed the program
as an outstanding contribution
to aiding in the recovery of
our wounded Marines!
From the start, it was determined
that TAV should be supported
through donations of money
and equipment. Donations have
come from churches, civic
organizations, individuals and
vendors of equipment and supplies.
Several vendors provide
significant discounts for purchases.
Rockler has been one of
our great supporters! However,
as the program grew, so did
the need for additional funding.
A donation of $1,000 was
used to purchase a lathe with
the name of the donor placed
on a small brass plaque on the
lathe. So most of the lathes were
purchased through sole donors.
Pens have been made and sold at
Gallery 21, the San Diego Fair
and other places. But additional
funds were needed to help pay
for pen kits, ice cream scoops,
finishing supplies, etc.
In May of 2012, I made contact,
together with my son, Jeff, with
the owner of the Torrey Pines
Lodge Gift Shop, Mrs. Susan
Evans. Together, we thought the
Gift Shop could sell items made
by our club members using
Torrey pine wood gleaned from
fallen trees and limbs around the
Torrey Pines Golf complex. Mrs
Evans was excited about the program
and designated a shelf in
her shop for the sale of our items
with a small sign indicating the
proceeds from the sale of such
items would be used to support
our TAV program. I was given a
source for the wood and solicited
volunteers to make pens,
bowls, bottle stoppers from the
Torrey pine wood I gave them
and place them for sale in her
shop. Initially, Mrs. Evans was
to keep a small amount of the
sales proceeds but she decided it
was for such a great cause, she
gives the club ALL the proceeds
from the sale of our items.
A number of Club members
have stepped up to the plate to
make items from Torrey pine
wood and the demand is increasing!!!
As of this writing, the
Club has received over $3,000
to support TAV in just one year
from Gift Shop sales! TAV is in
great financial shape!
Like all our programs, much
depends on volunteers from
our membership and TAV is no
different. You do not need to be
a “veteran” or have any military
experience-just know how
to turn wood and be willing to
teach these most worthy, and
deserving men and women!! We
also have a continuing need for
items made from Torrey pine
wood to make bowls,weed pots,
small boxes, etc. for sale in the
Gift Shop!! Just ask Tom Lightner
for some wood and he’ll get
it to you!!
In summary, TAV is a program
for which the members of
SDWT can be justly proud--and
I am so proud to be a part of it!!
San Diego Fair
SDWT Booth Update
The San Diego Fair is just
around the corner, June 8 th
through July 4 th . I thought it was
about time to give a heads up on
what you as a volunteer turner
needs to know.
You will need to bring your turning
tools and personal protective
equipment. Now remember we
will be turning small objects
such as tops, pens, egg cups,
bottle stoppers, boxes and small
bowls. Your whole arsenal of
weapons will not be needed.
The fair has asked us to keep
the sanding to a minimum. All
finishes and child safe felt pens
will be provided. Two inch hard
maple stock will be available.
Wear your protective equipment
at all times while you are turning.
We are there to ask for donations
for Toys for Tots and Turn
Around for Veterans. So no personal
projects. Arrive about 30
minutes early, just to get things
ready. At the end of the day one
of the volunteers will count the
donations and take all but $20.00
(leave the 20.00 in small bills
for the next day) home and then
write a check to SDWT and mail
it to P.O. Box 23093, Encinitas,
CA 92023. We will try to have
pre addressed envelopes at the
back of the booth for you to use.
Write the date you volunteered
& collected the donations on the
check.
The parking passes and fair tickets
should arrive in mid May. If
for some reason you can’t make
your time give as much notice as
possible and try to find a replacement.
Get your fair passes
and parking passes to me so that
I can give it to your replacement.
Your green lot parking pass is
good at the Solana (back gate)
gate of the fair only. If for some
reason you have to park at the
horse park which is due east of
the fair about 3 miles a shuttle
will bring you to the Solana
gate. Go to the left as you face
the gate and there will be a golf
cart with a driver to take you in
the fair and to Design In Wood.
Our booth is inside the door on
the right. There will be a volunteer
list on the counter in the
back of our booth. Please call
the next day’s volunteers and
remind them of their time slot.
If there are questions feel free to
call me – Tom Edwards at 619-
423-2778.
I will need 3 or 4 helpers for
setup o the 20 th of May and the
5 th of July for take down. Give
me a call in you are interested or
available and I’ll add you to my
list.

Kirsten EV Tool Post by Oskar Kirsten
This new tool post design allows you to not only register a fixed pivot location, but still easily slide in and
out. The Kirsten Tool Post is very simple; providing an inexpensive tool support with a known pivot as a reference.
Now you can concentrate on what you think is happening inside the EV and knowing exactly where
you are.
The Kirsten Tool Post is composed of a rigidly welded “L” bar inserted into the lathe banjo and leveled just
under the centerline of the Enclosed Vessel by adjusting the locking collar and fixing it tight.
Now available from
HOLLOW-PRO “ROCKET” Tools
blast the wood out of small hollow vessels!
Designed by professional woodturner Mike Jackofsky and manufactured in the USA by the Hunter Tool
Company, these tools feature a unique negative angle built into the tip. They have been specifically designed
to use the Hunter carbide cutters; the negative angle makes the carbide less aggressive and easier to control.
HOLLOW-PRO ROCKET tools are professional, fast and efficient hollowing tools for making hollow vessels
up to about 7" high x about 7" diameter. These 8" tools have 3/8" shafts to allow hollowing through very
small, restricted openings. The tools use replaceable #1 size carbide cutters and are designed to fit into any
large handle with a 3/8" or ½" opening. (Tip: place the screws from these handles on the side or top of the
tools, so the bottom will slide smoothly on the tool rest)
The round shafts of these tools can be rotated slightly to make clean “shear” cuts and the bent tool is also very
useful for undercutting the openings on larger hollow vessels.
Set of one straight and one bent tool includes replaceable Hunter #1 carbide cutters for clean cuts and durability,
and a Torx wrench for rotating and replacing the cutters as needed.
Notes On Use of Hollow-Pro Tools
STRAIGHT TOOL:
The Hollow-Pro Tools 3/8" ROCKET straight tool is a very versatile and efficient tool that can be used to
remove wood quickly and easily from hollow vessels and open bowls. It also works very well for hollowing
out boxes.
BENT TOOL:
The Hollow-Pro Tools 3/8" ROCKET bent tool was designed to hollow vessels up to about 7" in diameter,
but is also intended to be used on larger pieces as well. By using the smaller tool to undercut the first portion
of larger vessels the tool rest is closer, resulting in a cleaner cut and greater control. The larger Hollow-Pro
Tools bent tools can then be used to continue hollowing pieces up to about 14-15" diameter.
IMPORTANT: The tool rest height should be adjusted so that when the tool is held straight (parallel to the bed
of the lathe) the tip is cutting at the center line of the turning. For less aggressive cuts, raise the handle slightly.
Avoid lowering the handle, as that will raise the cutter tip and could result in a very aggressive angle of cut.
Mike recommends holding the handle against your body and practicing with the tools on an open bowl before
using them on a hollow vessel.
TIP: To avoid stripping out the Torx screws, make sure you clean them out before tightening or loosening
them, so the wrench can seat properly. An airgun and/or a sharp pointed object like a dental pick or a
safety pin, works well.
For more info e-mail Mike at: info@mikejackofsky.com or Visit Mike’s Web site: www.mikejackofsky.com
Please wear safety glasses and follow all safety rules of woodturning.
These tools are aggressive hollowing tools and should be used by or under the supervision of experienced turners.
HOLLOW-PRO Calipers
A. B. C.
These Hollow-Pro Calipers provide accurate measurements in crucial areas of hollow
vessels and open bowls.
A. Top wall—inside opening
B. Lower side wall
C. Bottom thickness—This is the important measurement to enable you to re-chuck the
bottom and KNOW how much wood you have to work with. This works equally well on
open bowls!
Hollow-Pro Calipers are precision made from steel and aluminum for maximum
strength while maintaining a comfortable light weight. The Small size
will work for hollow forms up to about 8" in diameter and up to 6 1/4" deep.
The Larger size works for hollow forms up to about 18" in diameter and up to
11 3/4" deep.
For more info e-mail Mike at: info@mikejackofsky.com or Visit Mike’s Web site: www.mikejackofsky.com
Please wear safety glasses and follow all safety rules of woodturning.
Empty Bowls
A Thank You

San Diego Woodturners Page 27 June 2013
Empty Bowls
Each year potters, glass blowers and woodturners donate bowls to be part of a wonderful fundraiser to feed the
hungry. We are all fortunate to have enough to eat every day and we sometimes forget that there are people in
our own city who go hungry.
TACO (Third Avenue Charitable Organization) is a local organization running the San Diego version of the
national Empty Bowl initiative. At the event (in the spring) supporters pay $20 for a bowl of their choice and
some soup. The soup is donated by a number of really great restaurants. (The bowls don’t have to be used to
eat the soup).
In 2012, 600 people attended and many bought more than one bowl. The event raised over $15,000 to help
feed those in need.
I would like to collect bowls all year so that we have a nice selection to donate. Please bring your donations
to any meeting and I will keep them safe until it is time to pass them on for the event.
Thanks for your generosity.
NEWS FROM THE DVD LIBRARY
From the DVD Library
The library has added Jimmy Clewes “Turn It Up” DVD’s available for checkout.
The DVD Crew
Please return your DVD’s so other members can check them out and enjoy them as much as you did. Look for
Mike Hosaluk’s DVD in the next couple months along with Jimmy Clewes Turn It Up.
Please remember as a member of the club you can check out 3 DVDs each month. Return them at the next
meeting and owe nothing, it’s a club perk! But….. if they are not returned the charge is $5.00 per month per
DVD. If you have any questions or comments please let us know. If you have suggestions on other DVDs
for the library we’d like to hear that too. Thank you for your support!
How to clean your DVD
Use a soft cloth ~ lint free ~(an old clean T-shirt works great)
Put a little water on the cloth
Wipe the disc from the center to the outside edge ~
DO NOT WIPE IN A CIRCULAR MOTION!
If the water does not solve the problem put some Isopropyl (rubbing) Alcohol on the cloth and wipe from the
center to the outside edge. Again, do not wipe in a circular motion.

Utah Welcomes SDWT
by Phil Stivers
The San Diego contingent
converged on the little town of
Orem, Utah recently to attend
the 34th annual Utah Woodturning
Symposium. One much
beloved activity was to be missing
this year; the pre-symposium
dinner at Mike Mahoney’s.
Mike and his wife Jenni recently
moved to California. We were
going to miss the tour of the
shop, the bowl basement, and
the favored Bowl-B-Q.
We still missed Mike’s old digs,
but this was a nice get together
and a fun way to start our Utah
adventure. Next year’s symposium
will be held May 15-17,
with the Craft Supplies Super
Wednesday event on May 14.
And hopefully another welcome
get together on May13th.
All was not lost though.
Through the efforts of Art
Bolic, Marshall Chapman, Sally
Ault and Mike Mahoney the
San Diego contingent met in
Mike’s favorite little park, Nelson
Grove Park, in Orem, close
to the Utah Valley University.
We met late in the afternoon of
May 14th, the day before the
Craft Supplies Super Wednesday
event. Several of the symposium
demonstrators and regulars
joined in…Gorst DuPlesis, Pat
and Peggy Bookey, Paul Chilton,
Clinton Biggs, Vic Wood , Ken
Wraight and others.
We had a great time listening
and sharing stories of life, turning,
and travel. The food was
catered by Mike’s favorite Mexican
restaurant. (and there was
a discrete selection of BYOB
adult beverages). We now know
why it was his favorite; the food
was excellent.

San Diego Woodturners Page 29 June 2013
Yes, there is May gray and of
course June gloom but summer
is coming! Hot days will drive
many of us into our shops during
the earlier or later part of the
day. Finishes will dry faster so
hopefully we will be working on
many projects.
In order to best prepare for a
summer of turning one must
have a sufficient supply of wood.
Of course the Nottingham Center
is the best place to stock up
on summer wood to turn. The
prices are not just good but great
and there is a variety of wood
to choose from as always. Our
last acquisition was liquid amber
and the pieces are small enough
for smaller lathes. Other choices
include redwood, monkey paw,
monkey puzzle, ash, olive,
carob, citrus, norfolk island
pine (large), avocado, sticks of
hardwood for lamination, and of
course mystery wood.
Summer is coming!
During your summer turning
please make sure you pick up
a couple of pieces of monkey
puzzle wood from our very
own Safari Park in the Escondido
area. This is a great deal
for you. Take two pieces of
monkey puzzle and turn both
pieces. One of the pieces is
yours to keep and the other one
goes to donors of the new “Tiger
Exhibit” at Safari Park. These
bowls or platters should come
back to me by January when the
Park plans to hold its dedication
of the new exhibit. We hope that
this effort/partnership will provide
some interesting new exotic
woods in the future.
If you are in need of anchor
seal I will as usual bring some
to each club meeting. You are
welcome to call or e-mail me
concerning your specific need
for anchor seal and/or wood. I
come to the meetings approximately
one hour early and stay
for a few minutes afterwards for
any last minute purchases.
Terry Sullivan has requested that
we move all wood (except for
the fire wood pile) to the North
side of the trailer. I am looking
for a few turners to join me in
purging our inventory and moving
the little bit of wood that is
on the South side of the trailer
to the North side. We will also
be cutting up some of the larger
pieces of ash, etc. into more
useable pieces. As always those
who help will be able to take a
piece or two home with them.
Please e-mail (bldewhite@
gmail.com) me or call (619-403-
0377) me if you can help. Let
me know what days are best.
Thanks,
Dan
Well, who is looking for Torrey Pine Look no longer as we came
across a large Torrey Pine in the Del Mar area. Mark Jacobson has the
wood at his place. The pieces are big so Mark is willing to make the
necessary cuts for you to take a few pieces home. Of course, there is
our modest charge but we know there is one else you had rather give
your money too! Please don’t
forget to make a few pieces for
the gift shop at Torrey Pines
Lodge while you are at it….all
the proceeds from sales of our
pieces at the Lodge go directly
to support our wounded warrior
programs at Balboa and Camp
Pendleton.
You can contact Mark Jacobson
at mark.pamj@yahoo.com
or call him at 858-449-5669 to
make arrangements to get some
of this wood.

As members of the San Diego
Wood Turners you might come across an opportunity for us to add to our wood inventory. The following
are among the types of wood we have an interest: olive, black acacia, fruit wood, ash, Norfolk Island Pine,
maple, walnut, liquid amber, alder, carob, eucalyptus, oak, avocado, and wood burl.
You might wonder about our guidelines for acquiring wood.
“Access” to the wood is important
“Chipping and/or hauling away material” are left to the owner of the property
“Wood” needs to be fallen and of manageable dimensions for transport
“Property lines and power lines” are respected
“Safety” is paramount and every effort is made to keep our volunteers safe
“Building relationships” and having a good time with other turners is important
If you hear of anyone needing
to move wood off their property
please give me a call.
In order to be a member of
the San Diego Woodturners,
member of AAW and only need
to renew your SDWT membership,
read the section below “To
renew your SDWT membership
To sign up or renew online
with AAW
Go to the AAW website, www.
the correct amount (normally
$80 for general membership)
