Welcome from the World Cup Committee Chairs
On behalf of the Olympic Oval, Speed Skating Canada, the Alberta Amateur Speed
Skating Association and the Organizing committee we would like to extend a warm
welcome to the Samsung ISU Short Track World Cup #1 held at the Olympic Oval in
Calgary, October 19-21, 2012.
We are welcoming the world to Calgary, and anticipate twenty-eight countries
participating in this weekend’s event. The Olympic Oval has a tradition of excellence
in both long and short track speed skating and we are excited once again to host a
Short Track World Cup on “The Fastest Ice in the World TM”.
With the Olympic Oval celebrating our 25 th anniversary and it also being the
anniversary of short track’s Olympic debut as a demonstration sport at the1988
Winter Olympic Games in Calgary, it seems only fitting that we celebrate these two
milestones and 25 years of short track as an Olympic sport.
We are also celebrating the raising of a tribute banner to short track speed skater
Alanna (Kraus) Handley on to our Olympic Oval Wall of Champions. The tribute
ceremony to mark this special occasion takes place on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
During your time in Calgary we hope you have an opportunity to enjoy what the city
of Calgary has to offer, as well as our Olympic Oval facility as a destination for future
training and competition opportunities.

The following is available to members of the media who have been approved for media accreditation for the

Your accreditation allows access to the following:
‐ The Samsung ISU World Cup #1 Press Conference , Oct. 17 at 12:30 p.m. at the Olympic Oval
‐ The Samsung ISU World Cup #1 event, from Oct. 19‐21, 2012
‐ The Media Mix Zone at ice level during the event. This area is for media activities only (interviews, cameras,
photographs, etc.). No loitering.

Things to remember:

Highlights
This is the first World Cup short track event held at the Olympic Oval since 2003.
This season is the 25 th anniversary of both the opening of the Olympic Oval and the 1988 Calgary
Winter Olympic Games. This year we give a nod to the ’88 Games with this short track event ‐
short track speed skating debuted as demonstration sport (at Max Bell) during these Olympics.
We also give a nod to the future – the Olympic Oval School of Speed presented by Intact
Insurance on Friday, Oct. 19 will see 847 students filling the stands to watch the best in short
track compete. Some of these children could be future champions.
The Olympic Oval is world‐renowned for its “Fastest Ice in the World”, with a total of 280
world records in long and short track set in the building since 1988. In short track, the
combination of tight corners and speed means that skaters sometimes crash during races.
Because of this, the rink is surrounded by cut‐resistant protective mats to protect the athletes if
they fall. This state‐of‐the‐art boardless pad system was developed at the University of Calgary
as a result of research and testing at the Olympic Oval.

We have had an amazing response to our School of
Speed Program presented by Intact Insurance, and
our bleachers are full for the morning of October 19!
We are ready to receive over 850 students, teachers
World Cup Short Track #1.
As part of the Samsung ISU World Cup Short Track #1,
Calgary and area schools are invited to participate in the
Olympic Oval School of Speed (SOS) presented by Intact
Insurance on Friday, Oct. 19, 2012.
This World Cup short track competition is a rare chance
to see the world’s best speed skaters compete on “The
Fastest Ice in the World” at the Olympic Oval. In this
pre-Olympic season the competition level will be high, as
athletes are focused on achieving strong results leading
up to the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.
This program offers grade 4, 5 and 6 students and their
teachers:
Oval and back (one chartered bus);
panying
adult supervisors;
2 curriculum including; geography and cultures of the
participating countries, history of speed skating, Olympic
values, healthy lifestyle and nutrition, the science and
mathematics of speed skating;
Oval Program high-performance speed skating athletes;
short track event.

SHORT
TRACK 101
Long track speed skating has been an
Olympic sport since 1924 and has been
featured in international competition
at the Oval since 1987, the year the
Olympic Oval was built. Short track speed
skating made its Olympic debut as a
demonstration event at the 1988 Calgary
Winter Olympic Games at Max Bell
Arena. Full medal status was awarded to
the sport in 1992 at the Albertville Winter
Olympics. In August of 1992 the short
track program at the Olympic Oval was
to be a national short track training centre
to this day.
The Track
Short track speed skating takes place on a
111.12-metre oval track on a rink measuring
30 metres by 60 metres. The corners are
tight and skaters sometimes crash during
races. Because of this, the rink is surrounded
by cut-resistant protective mats to protect
the athletes if they fall. This state-of-the-art
boardless pad system was developed at the
University of Calgary as a result of research
and testing at the Olympic Oval.

Starter
The Races
Instead of racing in pairs as in long track,
short track skaters mass start with four to
eight skaters on the starting line. Positions
are drawn and the competition pits skater
against skater. Strategies and tactics are
very important in a race. Races are often
won by strategy rather than speed.
The World Cup circuit uses 500-metre,
1000-metre, 1500-metre and relay races to
determine a champion for each distance
over the course of the season. Each
individual distance is raced eight times,
with the top six results for each athlete
Races are skated counter clockwise.
Overtaking is allowed but the skater who
overtakes is responsible for any collision
or obstruction that results. If a skater is
lapped, they may be moved to the outside
track by the referee, and if lapped twice,
must leave the race.

Athletes to Watch!
Jessica Gregg: Based in
Calgary, Jessica Gregg is the
hometown girl to watch! She
has won 17 world cup medals
since her debut on the world
cup circuit in 2008. She also
won a silver medal in the relay
at the 2010 Winter Olympic
Games in Vancouver.
Valérie Maltais: 2012 World Champion
in the 3,000-m and 1,000-m.
She also won a silver and 2 bronze
in the relay at the World Championships.
On the world cup circuit
she has won a silver medal and 2
bronze individual medals; 2 silver
and 8 bronze in the relay over her
career. She began speed skating
when she was six and competed
Marianne St. Gelais: Won a silver
medal in the 500-m and was a
member of the silver medal relay
team at the 2010 Winter Olympics.
She competed in the 2010
World Championships, winning
bronze in the 500-m and silver in
the relay. On the world cup circuit
she has won 9 gold, 3 silver and
3 bronze individual medals, as
well as 3 silver and 8 bronze in
the relay.
Charles Hamelin: Charles
competed at the 2006 and
2010 Winter Olympic Games.
He won gold in the 500-m
and in the relay in Vancouver
in 2010, and earned a silver
medal in the relay in 2006.

Olympic Oval Wall of Champions
There are two short track speed skaters on the
Wall of Champions at the Olympic Oval – Derrick
Campbell and Alanna Kraus Handley (Alanna will
be inducted on Oct. 20 at 5:00 p.m.). Both skaters
were national team members, Olympic medalists
and trained at the Olympic Oval.
Short track speed skaters are required to wear
more safety gear than long track speed skaters
because they race in packs with close contact
to other skaters. Required safety gear includes:
a hard shell helmet, ankle protection, cut-resistant
gloves, knee pads, neck protector, eye
goggles, and shin guards. Skin suits must also
be made of a cut-resistant material, often kevlar,
to enhance safety and reduce injuries.
Deionized water is used to make the long track
speed skating ice on the 400-metre oval. This
water reduces impurities and friction with the
skater’s blade. Regular tap water is used for
short track speed skating ice as the minerals allow
skaters more grip on the tight corners.
To maintain “The Fastest Ice in the World TM ”
are not permitted in the Oval.
