B. David Rowe, Ph.D.
An ordained United Methodist minister, President Rowe holds a
Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Southwestern University,
a Master of Divinity degree from Emory University and a Certificate in
Ecumenical Studies from the World Council of Churches and the University of
Geneva. He earned the Ph.D. from Georgia State University where his research
led to the dissertation entitled Cultural Leadership and Peace: An Educational
Response to Religious Violence.
With more than 18 years in higher education administration, and with extensive planning, fundraising,
and institutional marketing experience, Dr. Rowe has served Wesleyan College, Oxford College of Emory
University, and the Candler School of Theology. His professional interests, which include organizational
transformation and global sustainability, complement his research specialization in leadership development and
social change. He is the co-founder of a non-profit organization, Oikos (oý-kos), which focuses on systemic
solutions for global sustainability.
Dr. Rowe joins Centenary at a time of transition for the College and looks forward to helping to find ways
to propel Centenary into the future. Against the backdrop of the nation’s faltering economy, a new vision is
emerging for Centenary College: to define church-related liberal arts education for the 21st Century.
The challenge will be to create such a program while optimizing the use of shrinking resources.
With these moves, Centenary is charting a bold new course into this century and beyond. A renewed focus
on undergraduate arts and sciences programs will set the stage for complementing these programs with graduate
professional programs, and to investigate the creation of more opportunities for students to engage global
cultures through sustained and well-crafted international study experiences.
A native Texan, Dr. Rowe is married to the former Jodi Hyde of College Park, Ga. They have two sons –
Carter (8) and Philip (6).
College Maces
The Centenary College Seal
The official seal of Centenary College states the motto of the institution. Translated,
the Latin phrase “Labor Omnia Vincit” means “Work conquers all.” It is through this
commitment to hard work that Centenary College, and the entire Centenary
family, has
distinguished itself in many fields of endeavor since its founding in 1825.
A mace is a highly ornamented staff of metal or wood, carried before a sovereign or other high
official in civic ceremonies by a mace-bearer, intended to represent the official’s authority.
Processions often feature maces, as on parliamentary or formal academic occasions. casions.
Centenary College’s academic processional maces were requested by President
Emeritus Donald A. Webb in 1989 and designed in collaboration with Professor
Emeritus Willard G. Cooper. The maces incorporate the symbols of Centenary
College of Louisiana; the College Seal and the Yoncopin flower.
The Charter
The Presidential Medallion & Chain of Office
The bronze presidential medallion was first given to Dr. John Horton Allen at his
inauguration on October 21, 1970 by George D. Nelson, Chairman of the Board of
Trustees and the first to be used in the history of the College. The medallion is in the
form of the College Seal and carries the Latin inscription “Sigillum Officiae Praesidie,”
which translated means “The Seal of the Office of the President.”
It is part of the president’s academic dress for all ceremonial occasions, casions,
and has been handed down through the years to succeeding presidents.
Centenary College of Louisiana adopted its charter in 1848. It was adopted after the
merger of the College of Louisiana and Centenary College. The 1848 charter was
reproduced several times and has had a series of amendments added over the years.
President Rowe will be presented with a handwritten reproduction of the charter
made sometime after 1871 (and likely before 1900).
Academic Regalia
The academic attire of today has a history of
nearly eight hundred years, first in the church
and then the guilds. In Medieval Europe, men
and women typically wore gowns or robes that
had a great deal of variety in color and material,
depending upon the position and wealth of the
wearer. Gradually there developed distinctive gowns
for various professions, trades and religious orders.
Students and teachers in many medieval universities
organized themselves into guilds. Gradually the
academic attire became distinctive for Bachelors
of Arts (the apprentices), Masters of Arts (the
teachers), and Doctors (teachers who had completed
postgraduate studies).
Principal features of academic dress are the gown,
the cap and the hood. Early, it became necessary for
universities to set rules and standards to preserve the
dignity and meaning of the academic attire. In 1895,
the United States set for its universities a uniform
academic costume code, which is reflected in most
of the regalia worn today. Meanwhile, European
universities maintained their right to variety. The
vivid diversity of regalia for European degree holders
brings to the American commencement such visual
pleasures as sable berets, cardinal robes and other
distinctive garb.
THE ROBE OR GOWN: Originally worn as
protection against the cold of unheated buildings,
the gowns used in American academic ceremonies
today vary according to the highest degree awarded
to the wearer. Bachelor’s gowns have pointed sleeves,
and are worn closed. Master’s gowns have oblong
sleeve, open at the wrist, with the base hanging
down, and rear part of the oblong cut square while
the front arc cuts away. These robes have fasteners so
they can be worn open or closed. The doctoral gown
is a more elaborate costume faced down the front
with black velvet and across the sleeves with three
bars of the same; these facings and crossbars may be
of velvet of the color distinctive to the field of study
to which the degree pertains. The doctoral gown has
bell-shaped sleeves and may be worn open or closed.
All three gowns are usually black, though some
colleges and universities use the color of the school.
THE CAP: The mortarboard cap is standard,
although soft square-topped caps are permissible.
Recipients of doctorates may wear a gold tassel
fastened to the middle point of the top of the cap;
all others wear black. The color of the tassel denotes
the discipline.
THE HOOD: The hoods are lined in silk with
the official color or colors of the institution which
granted the highest degree held by the wearer; more
than one color is shown by division of the field color
in a variety of ways, such as by chevron or chevrons.
The binding or edging of the hood is in velvet, with
widths of two inches, three inches and five inches
for the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees
respectively; the color of the border indicates the
field of study to which the degree pertains.
About Centenary College
Centenary College is the oldest chartered liberal
arts college west of the Mississippi River and is
accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges
and Schools. With a student body of about 1,000,
Centenary is a private, coeducational, residential,
four-year arts and sciences college affiliated with the
United Methodist Church.
The College traces its proud lineage and tradition
of preparing students for their futures back to its
founding in 1825 when the College of Louisiana
opened in Jackson, La. The College of Louisiana had
established itself as one of the leading educational
institutions in the country, rivaling even Harvard’s
enrollment, as nearly 300 students attended the
College. But, as was the case with many schools
during this time period, even though the school
enjoyed early success, it struggled and in 1845
merged with Centenary College in Clinton, Miss.,
creating Centenary College of Louisiana. A Mississippi
Methodist institution, Centenary College was
originally founded to celebrate the 100th Anniversary
of John Wesley’s organization of the Methodist
Societies of England. Centenary too was struggling
financially and the newly merged Centenary College
of Louisiana remained in Jackson, La.
The incorporation of the two schools proved to
be a good move for both institutions. Before the
Civil War, the College enjoyed many productive
years, including the construction of a magnificent
classroom/administration building, flanked by two
residence halls, one of which is still standing as a
museum and relic. But for all the growth the College
enjoyed during the pre-Civil War era, the war in
effect, dealt another blow to Centenary and Jackson,
La. The College closed during the conflict, and six of
the 10 seniors were killed in battle or died of wounds
and illness. The College was used as a hospital and was
captured and recaptured by Union and Confederate
forces. The campus itself was the scene of more
than one battle. The campus at Jackson never really
recovered from the War. However one of the best
things that can be said of the postwar years in Jackson
is that finally in 1895, 70 years after its founding,
women were admitted to the College. In 1903, four
of the 20 graduates were women.
Never regaining the footing it had in the 1840s
and 1850s, through the efforts of prominent
Shreveport Methodists and community leaders,
the College moved to Shreveport in 1908 and
immediately enjoyed success. By the mid-1920s
Inauguration Program.indd 14
3/31/10 2:39 PM

Centenary had firmly established its role as a small,
coeducational, undergraduate, residential, liberal arts
institution. During the 1920’s and 1930’s, under
the leadership of President George Sexton, former
minister of First Methodist Church in Shreveport,
the College underwent a period of campus growth
and prosperity, including the architectural design
that largely remains today. The school during this
time also became a football powerhouse and enjoyed
wins over rivals such as Louisiana State University,
University of Texas at Austin, and University of
Notre Dame.
After World War II, the campus was made up of
only three brick buildings – the current Meadows
Museum (then the Administration Building), Jackson
Hall (originally a residence hall, a science and classroom
building, and a cafeteria), and Haynes Gym. Through
the mid 20th century, under the direction of President
Joe J. Mickle, Centenary added more buildings, most of
which still stand today…a tribute to his vision.
The academic reputation of Centenary has
remained strong since the 1920s. Highly ranked as a
national liberal arts college, Centenary receives high
marks in the annual college and university rankings
published by U.S. News and World Report. The
Princeton Review recently named Centenary “One
of the Best 371 Colleges,” followed by Forbes.com
recognizing the College as “One of America’s Best
Colleges,” “One of America’s Best College Buys,”
and “One of America’s Best Private Colleges.” In
2007, Newsweek named Centenary the “Hottest
Liberal Arts School You Never Heard Of” in its
“25 Hottest Universities” feature.
Today, Centenary is in the process of
transforming itself once again and is entering a
new era of leadership in church-related liberal arts
education and new circles of excellence in academics,
in the arts, and in athletics.
Centenary is currently in its 185th year.
Purpose Statement
Centenary is a selective liberal arts college offering programs in the
arts, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences, which strengthen the
foundation for students’ personal lives and career goals. Students and faculty
work together to build a community focused on ethical and intellectual
development, respect, and concern for human and spiritual values, and the
joy of creativity and discovery.
Consistent with its affiliation with the United Methodist Church, the
College encourages a lifelong dedication not only to learning but also
to serving others. It strives to overcome ignorance and intolerance; to
examine ideas critically; to provide an understanding of the forces that have
influenced the past, drive the present, and shape the future; and to cultivate
integrity, intellectual and moral courage, responsibility, fairness,
and compassion.
In pursuit of these ideals, the College challenges its students throughout
their education to write and speak clearly; to read, listen, and think critically;
to comprehend, interpret, and synthesize ideas; to analyze information
qualitatively and quantitatively; to appreciate the diversity of human cultures;
to respect the value of artistic expression; and to recognize the importance
of a healthy mind and body and the interdependence of people and
the environment.
Academic and co-curricular programs, as well as the example of those
who teach and work at Centenary, support students in their development
and encourage them to become leaders in the work place, the community,
the nation, and the world at large.
