POOL CUES
Pool Facility Update
No remodel is perfect, so much of the off-season has been dedicated to getting things right. Here's what's
been happening:
• A couple of slope issues - one at the entrance and one at the bottom of the steps up to the clubhouse -
have been fixed. Old concrete was "hammered" out and a new slab was poured.
• The pool leak is now permanently patched.
• Much of the pool gutter system was removed and the lip was raised. The gutters are now level and we
will have much better movement of water over the edge.
• The slopes in the men's locker room have been addressed. The ADA shower was re-sloped and tiled.
The main shower also received additional tiles to help water flow to the drains. Low spots have been
"saw cut" to allow water to find the lower areas. This seems to be working, but we'll try it over a summer
and see if this is the correct fix.
• Backwash tanks were installed in the upper storage room at the east side of the building. The issue:
the filters are cleaned by reversing the water flow through the sand. Dirt and debris are then lifted off
the filters and sent down the sewer. Our new filters like to be backwashed at 700 gallons a minute. At a
City inspection last spring they said they would only allow 50 gallons a minute to go down the sewer.
If you've been following the issues with sewer capacity during storms, you can understand some of the
City's reluctance. To allow a full backwash, we now have three 1,500 tanks to hold the water before it
"trickles" down the drain. Ask Peter after we open if you are interested in seeing this system.
• The starting block anchors have been removed and will be correctly set. They were beginning to work
themselves loose at the end of last season.
• The rust stains around the pool ladders should now be solved.
• Earthworks has installed a new French drain system in the main grass area.
• Before we open, our contractor plans on fixing the main gate, the slippery spots at the entrance to the
men's dressing room, and re-pour concrete where cracks have formed around the shallow pool.
The Slide:
This is a difficult issue to explain. If you want the details, corner Peter after we open. As you remember
we were awaiting a decision from the State Health Department about a variance. (There are no "slide
standards", everyone is reluctant to set standards, and our state uses diving board standards for slides.)
After waiting a long time for their decision they finally admitted to losing our paperwork. After resubmitting
they gave us provisional acceptance with one of their conditions being satisfying a new federal law.
(Named after the granddaughter of ex-Secretary of State James Baker who died in a backyard spa, this law
has every pool scrambling to comply. It involves making sure that kids aren't sucked down on deep end
drains. Our new pool will have no problem complying.) This laws requires a test of the circulation system,
something we could only do a few weeks ago because the pool was empty. We think we are close to satisfying
the State - but slides are custom made and we may very well be running out of time to install this
season. We'll keep you informed.

Each family is asked to put in 4
hours. ($60 is charged to those who
don't participate.) Hours logged in
prior to opening will apply to 2008.
Hours over the summer will count for
2009.
Organized work parties are listed
above. However, if you see anything
that needs to be done, take the initiative.
For instance, some members have
been nice enough to sweep off the
Special Request: In order to open this year we
will have to be compliant with a new federal law which requires
special deep end drain covers. We can either empty
the pool at great expense - or find someone willing to go
underwater.
Tennis
Tennis classes are Monday - Thursday.
Times: 11:00-1:45, depending on level
Members usually fill our classes.
Tips for Registration:
Members, remember that you always have priority in registration. You can almost always get what you want if
you watch the dates and register before nonmembers. The only classes that tend to fill up with members is beginning
tennis and racing - especially for the first session. Gail and Rachel still feel that it's important to meet with each
person to find the right classes at the right times. They do swim and tennis classes at the same registration because
members need to coordinate both activities. However, they don't think the registration lines should be as long as they
have been the last few years. Here are some tips:
• If you are just signing up for tennis for older kids or most any swim class wait until later in the day. They
never fill up with members.
• Feel free to have your kids register for you. If they are already down at the pool for swim team or lessons,
they can grab a number and Gail and Rachel will help them when they are called. Send a note if you need
careful coordination with camps, etc.

Tennis Flights
Calling All VRSTC Adult Tennis Players!
Hello! The trees and flowers are blooming and warm weather has
started, so that can only mean one thing: the sound of rackets hitting
tennis balls on the VRSTC courts can’t be far behind.
We would like to invite all VRSTC adult tennis players to join in the
fun of a tennis flight! A tennis flight is competitive doubles play with an
8-game round robin format (switch partners after 8 games) for a total of
24 games. Flights are organized by skill level, and have three seasons:
spring (May-June), summer (July-August), and fall (September-October).
Skill levels are defined as follows:
Level C – Beginner
Level B – Intermediate
Level A – Advanced
There is no formal tryout; we ask that members use their judgment
in placing themselves at the appropriate skill level. Flights are only
open to club members. Below is the list of flight organizers for 2009.
Please give them a call and “get in the game”!
A bargain and a lot of fun!
Our club is
saddened about
the passing of
Dan Newman
on December
26th. For years
Dan served as
resident manager of the Sand Pipers
condominiums and worked
with Peter on a regular basis to
make us a better neighbor. He
was always understanding of our
situation and loved the sound of
kids coming from out pool. He
will be greatly missed.
Adult Tennis Lessons
We will continue to offer the immensely popular adult tennis lesson series. Certified United States Professional
beginning and intermediate sessions are available.
The schedule is listed below. A sign up sheet will be available at the front desk once the pool opens. For
those of you interested in the first session, please contact Ron Coleman at RCole50940@aol.com. There is a
maximum of 6 persons per class.
(Note: This is a popular activity! Because of problems with waiting lists and no-shows last year, if there is
a waiting list for a class, persons who are registered for a class and who do not show up for the first lesson will
be bumped from the class.)
Tennis News
Junior and Adult Tennis Information
Hello VRSTC tennis players! I’m Ron Coleman and this will be
my third summer coaching and teaching the adult and junior tennis
programs at View Ridge. I’m a USPTA certified teaching professional
and have been teaching and coaching tennis in the Seattle area for the
last eight years. I’m currently the head tennis coach for University
Preparatory Academy in the spring and Newport High School in the
fall. In addition to coaching and teaching tennis I’m also the USTA
Junior Team Tennis Coordinator for King County and a USTA certified
official.
I’m delighted to inform everyone that I will be managing the
View Ridge junior and adult tennis programs this summer. You will
see some familiar faces on the courts coaching as well as a few newly
hired instructors. It’s too soon to announce all of the instructors as I’m
still in the process of finalizing all of the positions; but rest assured I
will do my best to maintain the quality programming that Molly so
diligently brought to View Ridge last summer.
Not much will change in the core instruction. We will continue
to offer coaching and instruction for the View Ridge Middle School and High School teams, the Elementary
School team, Junior Group lessons, and the immensely popular Adult Group lessons. Private and semi-private
instruction will also be available.
All program schedules will be posted on the WEB site soon and included in subsequent newsletters. Also,
look for announcements in June for adult cardio tennis clinics starting in July!
Adult tournaments will be much the same as last
summer. There will be no singles ladders. The singles
tournament will be similar to the USTA flex league
format in that it will be played through-out the summer
with matches scheduled and arranged by participants
with results e-mailed to me. At the end of the season,
we will announce men’s and women’s 1st & 2nd place
winners and their names will be proudly displayed on
a plaque in the front desk area of the pool. For doubles,
there will only be a mixed doubles tournament the weekend
of July 17th-19th. More information on the singles
flex league and mixed doubles adult tournament will
follow in May.
My philosophy regarding coaching tennis is one
that includes learning the game and having FUN. View
Ridge is a wonderful environment for both.
Life is short, play more tennis!
Ron Coleman
Informational Meeting
Tuesday, June 16
7:00 PM, Clubhouse

May
The schedule is driven by many factors - competing uses, weather,
school calendar, and staff. We have always tried to open slowly, with
a few days of "Lap Swimming Only" followed by a weekend with "No
Guests." Many of our college kids aren't back yet and the idea of large
crowds with a rookie staff is a bit too much.
In addition, the majority of our lifeguards are high school students
who are restricted by state law - for instance, they can work no more
than 4 hours on school nights. Also, kids younger than 18 can't work
before 7:00 am. We'll try to figure out a way to add some early morning
swims before starting summer hours - but these regulations make this a
bit of a challenge.
