Section 8: CALMET Model Files<br />

8.8 Prognostic Model D<strong>at</strong>a File (PROG.DAT)<br />

<strong>The</strong> CALMET model allows the use <strong>of</strong> gridded prognostic model (CSUMM) winds to be used as the<br />

initial guess field or Step 1 wind field in the diagnostic model analysis procedure as a substitute for the<br />

normal Step 1 analysis. <strong>The</strong> use <strong>of</strong> the prognostic wind field option is controlled by the variable IPROG<br />

in Input <strong>Group</strong> 5 <strong>of</strong> the CALMET control file. If IPROG is set equal to one or two, the gridded<br />

prognostic model wind fields are read from a file called PROG.DAT. <strong>The</strong>se winds are interpol<strong>at</strong>ed from<br />

the prognostic model grid system to the CALMET grid to produce either the initial guess field or the Step<br />

1 wind field.<br />

<strong>The</strong> PROG.DAT file is an unform<strong>at</strong>ted d<strong>at</strong>a file containing the time, grid specific<strong>at</strong>ions, vertical layer<br />

structure, and three-dimensional fields <strong>of</strong> U and V wind fields. <strong>Table</strong> 8-19 contains a description <strong>of</strong> the<br />

variables included in each hourly set <strong>of</strong> winds.<br />

Note th<strong>at</strong> CSUMM does not allow the use <strong>of</strong> a Lambert conformal projection, so the coordin<strong>at</strong>e system<br />

must be a UTM system when CSUMM d<strong>at</strong>a are used (i.e., IPROG = 1 or 2).<br />
