Antibiotic Prophylaxis<br />

• Cirrhotic patients with UGIB high<br />

risk of bacterial infection<br />

Higher risk of recurrent variceal bleeding<br />

Higher mortality<br />

• Antibiotic prophylaxis x 5 – 7 days<br />

–Ceftriaxone, Quinolones<br />

–Reduced bacterial infections (with or without<br />

ascites)<br />

–Increased survival<br />
