At http://olonkho.info, information is available through interfaces in languages<br />

such as English, German, French, Japanese, Korean, Chinese and Turkish. Most<br />

of the textual content comes in Yakut and Russian. The website’s philosophy<br />

proclaims the principle of language equality, meaning that information<br />

resources can be accessed through any of the existing language interfaces.<br />

For example, a Yakut-language text will be presented in each of the language<br />

subsystems with its title in the original and in translation, as well as with a note<br />

about the original language, a reference to the source, a hyperreference, and, if<br />

possible, a translation of the full text or its synopsis.<br />

Multimedia files should come with descriptions in all languages; metadata for<br />

all the information resources should also be multilingual. The user will thus be<br />

able to receive information in all available languages without having to leave<br />

his or her specific linguistic environment on the Web.<br />

The Olonkho.Info Portal has a developed CMS-content management system,<br />

which enables authenticated users to correct already existing resources and<br />

contribute new ones.<br />

Such a website is possible to build only in the environment of a university that<br />

can offer a powerful IT infrastructure as well as competent personnel, including<br />

computer programmers, folklorists, translators, and bibliographers.<br />

The Olonkho.Info Portal has significantly enhanced its capacities thanks to<br />

the 2010-2011 Development Programme for the North-Eastern University,<br />

previously known as the University of Yakutsk.<br />

The content it features includes scholarly and non-scholarly publications;<br />

Olonkho texts; profiles of Olonkho reciters and academics specializing in<br />

epic heritage; digitized manuscripts; archival audio recordings; video footage<br />

of Olonkho contests, including among young narrators; voiced dictionaries;<br />

class pages; press; teaching manuals; methodology literature; links to related<br />

websites and organizations, etc.<br />

Information Technology for Preserving and Promoting Cultural Heritage<br />

In our efforts to preserve linguistic and cultural diversity, we should apply<br />

information technnology as extensively as possible. Subprojects implemented<br />

as part of the Olonkho IS project provide various examples of how IT could<br />

serve the purpose.<br />

Computer technology may be an especially powerful motivation tool for young<br />

Olonkho reciters. Through the feedback it provides, they will be able to see<br />

that their heritage popularization efforts resonate with a wide audience.<br />
