“Thanks so much for your amazing work planning
Songposium. I had the greatest time and learned a lot.
In fact, by the time I got back to LA, my brain felt like
it was going to explode! But your dedication to NSAI
and the extraordinary work you do, never ceases to
amaze me! Congratulations on another fantastic event!”
~ Felice Keller
“the instructors were
fabulous”
“Thank you for pulling off a wonderful Songposium
Week! Everything was so well organized, the instructors
were fabulous, etc. I appreciate this opportunity to
learn so much about songwriting and the music business
in general. A lot of this information is never disseminated,
and sometimes takes years to learn the hard way!
Thank you again for a wonderful NSAI week. I look
forward to seeing you in the near future.”
~ Lisa Hanna
“[an] opportunity
to learn so
much about
songwriting”
“Thanks for a terrific Songposium. It was the best-run
event I’ve attended, and I was impressed with your efficiency
as well as your friendliness, and that of the other
NSAI staff. All of my (10 attended class) instructors
were good, and quite a few were exceptional. I came
away with lots of pertinent “input”, and some clear
direction about what my next step(s) should be. I look
forward to seeing you again when I return to Nashville.”
SIVELY for NSAI Members. Log on to www.
Excerpts from the Don Rollins Chat Transcript
- 02/01/06
MODERATOR: Welcome to tonight’s NSAI
Online Pro Chat with pro songwriter Don
Rollins. Don will be here from 7 PM – 8 PM
(CST) to chat with you and try to answer any
questions you might have. He will share his
experiences with you and provide insight to the
music industry. We will try to get to as many
questions as possible, but we won’t be able to
answer them all. Thanks for joining us! Let’s get
started.
Q: Don, who was the person most influential in giving
you your first big break?
DON: Guy named Richard Orga, who published
a friend of mine.
Q: Don, what was your inspiration behind “Five
O’Clock Somewhere?”
DON: “Five O’Clock” was inspired by a guy I used to teach with, we
drank a lot of beer!
Q: Don, what NSAI benefits do you think would help songwriters trying to break in
the most?
DON: NSAI provides a network, which is essential in this business; it
also provides some access to ears that are hard to get to on your own
Q: Don, There seems to be a trend toward Pop sounding songs, do you think the old
type country songs are a thing of the past?
DON: Country music tends to move in cycles, so if there is a pop trend
you can bet things will swing back eventually...really retro music is another
issue.
Q: A bunch of us are out-of-towners and are trying to figure out if you can be successful
selling songs long-distance. You’re entry into song writing was pretty varied.
Any advice on how to stay connected and sell your songs from a distance?... or move to
Nashville?
DON: Long distance writing is really tough, I needed to be here at least
some of the time to be around people who were doing this every day
- it’s different if you are a working musician and have an audience to play
for at home.
Q: Do you think aspiring writers should make full demos or guitar/piano/vocals?
DON: Unless you are willing to come here and make demos that are on
a par with the ones done by the pros, a guitar or piano vocal is best in
most situations, again, if you have a band, that’s different
Q: What’s the best piece of advice that you can give to an unsigned songwriter.
DON: The best thing that I can say to anyone seeking entry to this asy-
NSAI’s Capital Campaign Closing in May!
We are getting our Contributor Wall design ready in preparation for fabrication
this summer. The wall will list the names of Contributor level donors
at the Top Ten ($100), Top Five ($250) and No. 1 ($1000) levels. There is still
time to be included so if you are interested in having your name on the
wall, please contact Erika Wollam-Nichols, Director of Development, at
Thanks so much to everyone who has contributed to NSAI’s Music Mill
fundraising campaign. We look forward to having you be a part of the
building – forever!

lum is to expand your network; people tend to
work with whom they know and who they are
comfortable with.
Q: What is your process for writing, do the lyrics come
to you first or the music, or more together.
DON: I like to write to a melody that is already
happening. I don’t know too many pros who
write from the lyrics out
Q: Are the music business registry/contact books/mags
worth the $ to new writers to invest in?
DON: contact books are ok, maybe once... I
wouldn’t spend a mint there...get to know real
people
Q: Don, what do you think about working with Nashville
studios long distance for demo work? DON: Be
REALLY careful with studios that solicit out
of town business....a few are ok but there are
some rip-offs tHere
Q: What proportion of the songs you write are co-writes
versus by yourself?
DON: I co write almost everything, but that is
just laziness and facing the business reality that
2 publishers pitching are better than 1
Q: I am located in Canada and signed to a small
publisher in Texas. Without the face-to-face contact
how often should I expect contact with my publisher? In
other words if they are reputable should they be filling
me in periodically on the progress of my songs if I initiate
the contact?
DON: Has the publisher gotten you any cuts?
If they have then they may be on track, but be
careful.
Q: Is playing in the round in Nashville a good thing to
do?
DON: Rounds are great if you use them to
expand your network...don’t expect to get “discovered”
there.
Q: what should we look for to know the good ones from
the rip-offs? Is the general rule, if anyone asks you to
put money up front, they are probably scammers?
DON: On the whole...but use your gut, and ask
around...ask the co for references and check
with the better business bureau. Word to the
wise: if it sounds too good to be true, it usually
is.
Q: Don, what is your best advice on taking an idea and
turning it into a song?
DON: Ideas are the essential element in any
song, as someone who writes every day, that is the toughest part of the
job; finding a great idea.
Q: what are the most important elements as far as quality of sound that a demo
should have?
DON: A demo should have the words clearly audible and the
instrument(s) should be in tune...those will kill you.
Q: If you have some BIG name friends in the business does it help to drop those
names while networking with new people who don’t know you, or does that leave a bad
taste in their mouths?
DON: Don’t drop names. get the BIG friends to make introductions,
which will help.
Q: Is a publisher the only way to get your songs to the artists? Is it ever OK to hand a
cd or ask to play a song for an artist if you come in contact?
DON: I would not pester artists you don’t know, that is really not well
received
Q: Don, What do suggest for the out-of-towners to get songs to publishers... any
chance at all for someone not in Nashville?
DON: Out-of-towners will have a harder time, one avenue is to try to
get songs to local bands where you are, audience testing is golden, and
you never know who will hear
Q: I and my partner are pursuing publishing. We have a nice Pro-Tools setup and
can produce the songs at a strong level. How important is that on the front end. Also,
should we insist on finding a female vocal to sing the “chick” songs we write as it
relates to publishing?
DON: Production is very important in pop, in country there is a narrow
window which is hard to imitate without the players we have here...I
would get a girl to do songs that are plainly for females.
Q: What is a “staff writer” and is that the ultimate goal of someone who just wants
to write?
DON: A staff writer is someone who is under contract to a publisher
and is usually paid a salary called a “draw”...again it is only as good as
that publisher’s ability to get cuts.
Q: If a local band is playing your song and is very popular, will it make it harder to
convince an artist to record it? What rights does the local band have to the song?
DON: A local band playing your song is a good thing... I was in Texas
when Mark Chesnutt was signed, and he was playing “Too Cold At
Home” in clubs a long time before that.
Q: Do you sing on your own demos? If not, were do you find your demo singers?
DON: I don’t sing on demos, I think there is a noise pollution law, I
know quite a few demo singers here who are awesome
Q: With all of the downsizing in the biz, are publishers welcoming to new writers?
DON: Publishers are always looking for new talent, small publishers
more than large, they tend to be like investment banks. ▪
The NSAI Interview: Mentor Williams
Mentor Williams and posse
hanging out at NSAI.
Q: You come from a pretty musical family. What
was in the Williams family blood that got you into
songwriting, producing and all of that stuff?
A: My brother Paul and I used to sing in the
car with my mom and dad. I grew up listening
to some of the great old love songs like Bing
Crosby songs, Johnny Bug, Jimmy Van Husen,
songs my dad used to sing to my mom. We all
just had a deep affection for music.
Q: What turned this in to a career for you?
A: I got in my first band in high school in
Albuquerque, N.M., called “The Poor Boys.”
We played one summer up in Red River, N.M.
I learned how to play guitar and started writing
songs for the band. They were sort of a cross
between country and pop. The day I got out of
high school I headed for California. I pitched songs everywhere possible
in L.A. for probably about 10 years. I was interrupted by the Marine
Corps for a few years, but even when I was in the Marines, I pitched to
every publisher I could find.
Q: Where did you get your break?
A: I got my first break while I was racing motorcycles out in the desert.
There were a lot of movie people around, and they were making a documentary
about racing, and I raced in the movie. So all of these people
would come and see my band play at places like the Troubadour and
asked me to do the music for the movie with my band. I then had that
album to offer to Chuck Kay. I got my first 6-month deal with Chuck,
probably around 1969. They gave me a $75 week advance. I wrote
“Drift Away” at that time. I had done some other demos and took those
to MCA and started a little production company. I was really interested
in Nashville, and came down here and walked the streets. I had a little
apartment over on West End. I met Troy Seals, David Briggs and put a
little rhythm section together. We did the Drift Away album down here.
As a result of the success of the “Drift Away” album, Chuck and Lance
came down, and we started a division of Almo Music, which has become
Universal Music now. The first writers were myself, Don Goodman, Troy
Seals, Roy Jennings. I produced several albums down here. I cut three
with Dobie and wrote a lot of songs on those albums, as did Tommy
Jans who wrote “Loving Arms.” I produced my brother Paul down here
in an album called “A Little on the Windy Side.” I also did part of Kim
Carnes’. I produced John Stewart, the trio. In the ‘70s I was basically
in Nashville and everything was just exploding. You could go down the
street and pitch a song to anyone. You could run into Hank Jr. or Waylon
cutting an album just over the fence.
Q: One of the things that really strikes me about you is that you still have
continued on page 11
NSAI: What albums can you not live without?
JR: Back in Black, AC/DC, and Frank Sinatra’s Greatest Hits.
NSAI: If you could have any person, dead or alive, cut one
of your songs, who would it be?
JR: Frank Sinatra.
NSAI: What is your favorite song you’ve ever written,
cut or not?
JR: “The Bed.” Gretchen cut it on her first album.
NSAI: Are there any strange jobs you’ve taken to support
your ‘writing habit’?
JR: I fed 600 pigs twice a day.
NSAI: What is your favorite song?
JR: “I’ve Got the World on a String” by Frank Sinatra or
“Midnight Rider” by Willie Nelson.

that kid-like enthusiasm about it after all these years, and you’ve managed to
be successful over 4 decades, going into almost a 5th, and we talk about songs,
and you still get so excited. How do you maintain that genuineness? You
don’t seem to let that business part of music business get in your way.
A: I sit here today as thrilled as I was when I listened to my first demo.
I’ve been in a hotel writing for five days with these great guys. It’s
just back to the basics with my guitar in a hotel room, and there’s just
nowhere I’d rather be, except maybe fly fishing or playing golf with my
brother. When that line comes, or when you get into a groove picking
“I got my first break while I was
racing motorcycles out in the desert.”
up that guitar, I can’t wait! I think I am going through a period right
now where I am going back to the simplest things and having the most
fun. I’m going from here to L.A., and looking back on the people who
have recorded my songs…Tina Turner, Rod Stewart, the Rolling Stones,
Ray Charles, Alabama, and Waylon. The fact that that has happened to
me still doesn’t soak in, you know? When I worked at Apple, I recorded
with Paul McCartney two of the songs I had written for Kenny Jones,
who was Rod Stewart’s drummer and then became the drummer for the
Who. I met Kenny in London when I was producing Stealer’s Wheel. I
have just been blessed. I’ve been totally blessed, and I know all of my
songwriter friends feel the same way. We can’t believe that you write a
song, those lines keep coming, and you worry about the next one. So, I
don’t think anything has changed.
I was blessed the first day I walked down 16th Avenue. I was going to
different places trying to pitch songs and I went in this one place and
they told me to wait a minute. They said Chet was in there and for me
to go in and play him some songs. So the first day I was in Nashville,
Dawson Ford
Thank You
I sat down and played guitar and sang some
songs to Chet Atkins. That I think was in
1969.
Q: Do you look at Nashville as your home?
A: My life changed in Nashville. I bought a
house here in 1983 and have been here ever
since.
Q: What are the keys to your success over so
many decades? Songs change, the public appetites
change. How do you manage to continue to succeed
as a songwriter?
A: Keep writing. I just keep writing. I’ve had
some people tell me not to learn any more than
you know. In a way my simple guitar playing
and my simple melodies haven’t really stretched
out too far over the years.
Q: You’ve managed to make relationships with
acts who are changing music styles so you seem to
be in the middle of what’s going on.
A: I think I can put myself in these situations
that these new groups are in. The things I like
about them, I see in myself and in what I bring
to the table. Bringing things back to the basics
of a good song, good lyrics and good melodies.
Q: What advice do you have for the person out
there who wants to be the next Mentor Williams?
A: I say be where it is happening. You have to
be at the door where things are going on and
keep writing. ▪
On behalf of my son Dawson and our entire family, THANK YOU all for your well wishes,
your prayers, your gifts and your contributions to his benefit fund. Your generosity – be it
from those of you we know or those of you we’ve not yet met – has truly touched us and
has helped ease the awful burden that we’ve struggled with through some dark and terrifying
days. Your notes and personal encouragement have been such a tremendous comfort
to us. Likewise, we so appreciate the books, toys and other gifts that helped keep him
occupied during such an emotionally trying time. Though Dawson must yet be monitored
for the next several years, we are greatly encouraged by his latest checkup. He continues
to adjust well to his prosthetic eye even as he recovers from a broken leg suffered during
a sledding accident in February. Through these setbacks, he has proven to be such a
spirited, resilient four-year-old, and through your contributions, we anticipate being able
to meet his present medical expenses, as well as any future needs that may arise. Above
all, we especially thank Almighty God, the Great Healer and Provider, for His mercy, His
answers to countless prayers and His tangible expressions of love through friends like you.
We’re humbled, honored and grateful that you would think of us in these ways.
Jimmy Payne (sitting) with the St. Louis workshop.
Bedford, IN
The Bedford group has been focusing on using the NSAI evaluation service
for rewrites of their songs. At the April meeting Brandon Pfeiffer
of Little America Records spoke about preparing for a demo. Upcoming
meetings will cover how to market your music.
Boston, MA
The Boston workshop meets the last Monday of each month in
Waltham, Mass. In February they discussed performing rights organizations
(ASCAP, BMI, SESAC) with input from our pro writers, Tom
Paden and George Teren. In March the group did a lesson on conversational
lyrics from Jason Blume’s ‘Inside Songwriting’. On May 7th there
will be a concert by Nashville songwriters, Tia McGraff and Tommy Parham.
For more information on the workshop, check out www.coolsongs.
us/nsai.
London, England
The UK chapter of the NSAI is now up and running. After a few years
of running into logistical problems, the perfect workshop venue has
been landed in the front of the NSAI UK Coordinators’ (Jae Avery and
Jeffrey Backus) feet. The website www.nashvillesongwriters.co.uk was
quickly put together, and songwriters were informed of the NSAI UK
launch. The response was very good, and the first meeting was well attended
by a group of NSAI members and non-NSAI members. Some
people from continental Europe have already shown interest in coming
to the UK for some of the upcoming workshops and seminars. The first
2-day seminar was held on May 13th - 14th at
the London College of Music, and Professor
Pat Pattison of Berklee College will be teaching
the seminar. Other major Nashville Pro’s have
gotten in contact with the NSAI UK chapter to
try to arrange workshops or online chats. The
“I” in NSAI just got a little bigger.
North Atlanta, GA
In mid-January between weekend shows at
Roswell, Georgia’s Swallow at the Hollow,
hit writer Gretchen Peters provided NSAI’s
Atlanta - Metro North Chapter with a wonderful
Q&A session at Dreamcatcher Guitars.
Gretchen offered insights into the publishing
business, her own creative process and, of
course, performed for the several dozen members
and guests in attendance. Her responses
to questions were always honest and sometimes
quite revealing, as she described an approach to
writing that follows her muse more often than
the latest whims of the industry’s “hit-making
machinery.”
Everyone who was there was impressed with
Gretchen’s warmth, sincerity and the encouragement
she offered to songwriters at all levels.
The entire Metro North Chapter is very appreciative
that she offered to spend time and share
her songwriting wisdom with us.
The Pittsburgh workshop is excited to have the
opportunity of writing a song live on a local
country radio station. The station will be promoting
this “on-air” event which will be taking
place later this spring or in early summer. The
DJ’s will keep checking back with the group
as they play songs, and do traffic and weather.
The writers will be keeping them “informed”
of the process they go through such as song
title selection, verse development, etc. Some
local pro-writers may even team up with the
Pittsburgh group for this event. At the end of
this workshop, the radio station will play the
song we put together. Again, this would all be
done live on the airwaves. The members of the
group know things will be a bit stressful and
tense, but are looking forward to the challenge.
The Salt Lake City Chapter of NSAI, recently hosted, on Sat. April 8th,
their wonderful Adopt-a-Shop Pro, George Teren, for a full day Songwriter’s
Symposium to a packed audience at the Shilo Inn Downtown
Salt Lake City. Shilo Inn graciously helped sponsor the event which
included George talking with attendees about his songwriting career,
business Q&A, what makes a hit song and co-writing fundamentals.
St. Louis, MO
Jimmy Payne was the special guest for the St. Louis workshop on February
13, 2006. Jimmy has had 200 songs recorded over the last 40 years,
including the major hit “Woman, Woman” (Have You Got Cheating on
Your Mind), which exceeded 4 million airplays in 2005.
South Florida
WKIS Miami invited our NSAI members to the radio station to spend
the morning with Clint Black and the afternoon with John Corbett on
January 17th. NSAI member Karel Daniels said, “This is the best day
of my life!!”
At the March 15th workshop jazz composer and performer Bill Gordon
led a discussion on writing music for film and television. Bill
studied at Berklee College of Music and Wiesbaden Conservatory in
Germany, and has had music in primetime network programs including
Judging Amy(CBS), Entourage(HBO), Jack and Bobby(TNT), Boston
Public(Fox) and The District(CBS).
Tallahassee, FL
Songwriters from the Tallahassee NSAI workshop have been participating
in monthly songwriter showcases organized and sponsored by
Greater Big Bend Music since August 2005. The format includes the
popular songwriter acoustic sets, as well as some full band sets, plus seasonal
entertainment. The showcases are held at the Paradigm night club
in downtown Tallahassee.
Tysons Corner, VA/Washington DC
On Saturday, March 4th, Steve Seskin paid his annual visit to the Tysons
Corner, VA/Washington, DC workshop. Twenty-five people turned out
for Steve’s morning discussion about writing and re-writing, which he
then followed with an afternoon of song evaluations. As is typical with
one of Steve’s sessions, the attendees came away completely pumped up.
In some cases it was because of the insights they learned that morning
about the craft of songwriting; in others it was because of a recommendation
Steve made about their song that they recognized made it
instantly better. The event was open to non-members, which also helped
to get some potentially new members interested in the workshop. ■
Charlotte, VA
On April 11th NSAI Charlotte, NC celebrated its 10th anniversary.
Bruce Johnson, Steve Simpson and Charlotte’s newest coordinator, Herschel
Brown (Browne) led a meeting where we read letters from many
of the professional songwriting friends we’ve made and we reminisced
about how the workshop and friendships developed over the years.
Past and present Rock Hill, SC coordinators Peggy Reel and Tim Jones
attended as well as Pro songwriter, Austin Roberts. Seeds were planted
for ideas for the next ten years of growth with NSAI as we relived our
visits to Nashville and our accomplishments in and around Charlotte,
Nashville and as far away as Europe and Japan. 2006 is our year of SOS
(Share Our Songs). We hope to match such past successes as our spinoffs
Song Finishers, CharlotteMusician.com, First Fridays, Coffee Shop
Showcases, Borders Bookstores Showcases, and our most recent venture
of a twice monthly radio hour on WIXE (The Mighty 1190). This is just
the beginning of the next ten years!
Lincoln, NE
Nebraska has had a busy NSAI group. Coordinator Robert DeBusk
has been lining up gigs all over Lincoln and surrounding communities.
Shows at nursing homes, senior centers, bars and several at the
SportsPage Restaurant, where there is a show every other month. The
SportsPage also is the host for the groups monthly meetings. The home
gigs are used as fundraisers for different charities. The March show was
recorded live and will be made into a double
live CD and sold, with profits going to Dawson
Ford and his family to pay for medical bills.
Our first compilation CD is nearly sold out and
we are under way on the second one. Member
Jenny Hasenjaeger has put together a web site
for us. This will be used to inform members of
upcoming events, news, and business for the
next meeting, photos and bios from the different
gigs. If you would like to purchase one of
the Dawson Ford Cds, you can contact us at
the web site. www.Nebraska2Nashville.com
Orlando, FL
Sheryl Olguin, one of the Orlando coordinators,
was selected as one of 6 finalists in the
Suwannee Springfest songwriter contest. The
competition was held March 23rd in Live Oak,
Florida. Headliners in the festival included
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Del McCoury,
Mavis Staples, Buddy Miller Band, Uncle Earl,
Jim Lauderdale and many more.
Stephen Desjardins’ song “I’m Not Laughing
Anymore” has placed in the top 5 at SongUniverse
for last month. Stephen played this song
at our group meeting in October. He tweaked
the song after listening to critiques from fellow
song writers, then had another demo done.
Stephen says “THANK YOU fellow NSAI
members for making a dream come true.”
San Diego, CA
Liz Axford received her first ASCAP royalty
check for international airplay of her song
“Who’s Been Playing With The Jukebox?” Her
song lyric was translated into Swedish by Bo
Söderholm and recorded and performed by Susanne
Holm (Finland). The song aired daily on
Finnish Radio Vega from 5/15/04 - 7/15/04
as part of the Stjärnbandet 2004 Festival (www.
susanneholm.com/sb.htm). ■
