DECATUR
Alcohol petition drive begins ...
ontinued from page 3A
records of club memberships to be able to sell alcoholic beverages
legally.
Mayor Joe Lambert said the food sales requirements
would continue to prohibit bars in the city.
Another petition would allow the sale of all alcoholic beverages
for off-premises consumption. That would allow liquor
stores similar to those in Bridgeport and Rhome to
operate in Decatur.
“It’s important for the sales tax revenue on alcoholic beverages
to stay in Decatur,” Lambert said. “The city and state
have ordinances in place to make sure that such stores are
not close to churches and schools, and since the beer and
wine election in 2003, there have been no problems.”
Decatur Police Chief Rex Hoskins said there has been no
change in crime statistically since alcohol sales were legalized
in the city in 2003. Driving while intoxicated arrests
are down a little, he said, while public intoxication arrests
are up slightly.
But it is primarily private clubs, and not retail sales, that
have fueled those arrests, Hoskins said, along with nonresident
drivers coming through Wise County.
“I don’t think it will make a difference one way or the
other,” he said of the proposed changes.
Longtime civic leader Patti Gage has agreed to help with
the petition drive to secure the required 384 signatures.
Gage was instrumental in getting signatures for the 2003
election.
Under state law, only registered voters in the Decatur
city limits can sign the petitions. The petitions were issued
Monday, and when they are complete, the signatures must
be verified by Wise County Elections Administrator Lannie
Noble before county commissioners can call the election.
Commissioners must call the election before the end of
August for the matter to be on the November general election
ballot.
OTHER VIEWS
We’d be wise to listen to President Truman ...
Continued from page 6A
weren’t before, and reap the harvest
that can come with having been the
White House occupant.
Truman opposed national primaries
to choose presidential candidates.
“A national primary would force
a candidate to raise a huge sum of
money in order to tour the country
and make his good points known,”
Truman said. “No poor man or even
one fairly well-fixed could finance a
national campaign. The money would
have to be raised and contributed by
the wealthy and the special interests.
The nominee would become obligated
to contributors, and that would not be
good for the country.”
And, President Harry Truman
would despise today’s lack of bipartisanship:
“It has been my experience in
public life that there are few problems
which cannot be worked out, if
we make a real effort to understand
the other fellow’s point of view, and if
we try to find a solution on the basis
of give-and-take, of fairness to both
sides.”
Truman also said, “Never use two
words when one will do best.”
Amen.
Paul even called the
Obama administration “un-
American” for demanding
that BP be held accountable
for the Gulf of Mexico oilspill
disaster, including payment
of billions of dollars in
Furthermore, Paul’s soulmate,
Sen. Lisa Murkowski
of Alaska, wants a government
bailout of BP and a
the “first five days” of their
Gulf of Mexico oil spill. I
suggest that both of them
be sent down to the Louisiana
what BP has done.
Even more revealing is
how mainline Republicans,
and even a great many Tea
Party members have sat
it were, refusing to rally
What a hoot.
Let the man speak. I
Stop dropping
off animals
This is to the people who
always dump unwanted
animals in someone else’s
neighborhood, thinking
they will find a home. Well,
that won’t happen because
almost everyone has their
own animals. They don’t
want the responsibility for
another.
This is what happened to
me.
YOUR VIEWS
I went out to feed my
cats, and there was this
big, black dog in my yard. I
tried to run him off, but he
wouldn’t leave. This went
on for a few days, and I
began to feel sorry for him
and fed him scraps.
Then I was stuck with
him. He was destroying my
flower beds, so I put him
in my fenced yard. I called
animal control to check him
for a microchip, but he tried
to attack her, so I didn’t
learn whether or not he
belonged to someone.
I took pictures with an
the vet’s offices and filling
done everything I could to
find him a home.
I asked animal control
put to sleep. I hated to do
this to the dog, but I had no
an animal, is “Don’t do it.”
