Out of 20 rodeos, he’s racked up more than $94,000 and finished in the top 10 in 50 percent of the events. He’s earned more than $2.7 million during his career and won the world championship in 2004. We’ve been kind of a trendsetter.” The total raised this year is not yet tallied. “Our goal was to raise $25,000 for the United Way of Wise County,” Rottner said. “We shouldn’t have a problem getting to that number.” The event has also raised money for the Rider Relief Fund, Wise Regional Hospital Fund, Habitat for Humanity and others. Since its inception, the rodeo has generated $270,000 for charities, Rottner said. J.W. Hart, a retired bull rider from Oklahoma, started the rodeo in Gainesville. “J.W. WISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, May 27, 2010 5A WISE COUNTY More burglars striking in daylight By MANDY BOURGEOIS In the movies, burglars often wait until nighttime to break into a home. “It’s not like the movies,” said Dan Williams with Hawk Electronics in Fort Worth. “Most burglaries happen between 10 a.m. and noon.” Williams has received a lot of business from Wise County residents in the recent months, and for good reason. In Decatur, residential burglaries are up and the county has seen an increase in daytime burglaries. “Since January, we’ve had 30 burglaries,” Sheriff David Walker said. “Eighteen of those have been during the daytime.” Walker said that the perpetrators have changed, as well. “A lot of people doing these burglaries are not our normal hometown folks. They’re coming from Tarrant County and Dallas County.” Decatur Police Chief Rex Hoskins is seeing the same trend. “In the last quarter (of 2009), we probably had 11 burglaries that happened between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. It’s a lot for us. We average, between residential and business burglaries, about 23 a year,” he said, adding that in 2009, the city reported 30 burglaries. Hoskins points to a common factor in many of the residential burglaries in Decatur — “there was no forced entry.” “They either found an unlocked door or an unlocked window,” he said. Throughout the county, electronics are the target — flatscreen televisions, computers and game consoles. Walker and Hoskins both described a similar approach to burglary. WALKER HOSKINS “They walk up and knock on the door, and if no one answers, they kick the door in,” Walker said. In the last eight months, Williams has installed 107 security systems in and around Decatur. He recently installed systems in more than half of the homes in Reatta Estates after recent burglaries. He said that 20 to 25 percent of the people who request security systems do so after they’ve been burglarized, or after a neighbor has been burglarized. Williams said that business has thrived in Wise County communities and in the metro areas. “It’s everywhere, not just Wise County,” he said. “Rural areas and neighborhoods – burglaries are random. There’s no rhyme or reason.” The sheriff’s department is working hard to make the most of their deputy coverage in the county. “We’ve flooded several areas that we’ve had issues with. We try to move our resources out on the road and try to be the first line of defense,” Walker said. “Obviously, we don’t have enough deputies to be on every corner.” With that in mind, he encourages people to report suspicious activity. “We want them to call in anything they think is suspicious,” Walker said. “It’s just making sure that all the neighbors are as vigilant as we are, whether they think it’s small or not. Something little may turn into something big.” Hoskins recommends that people lock their doors and windows. Also, serial numbers for electronics and guns should be recorded so that in the case of a burglary, the numbers can be used to track stolen items. Bridgeport Police Chief Randy Singleton said that Bridgeport has not seen an increase in burglaries. ! E-mail Mandy at mbourgeois@wcmessenger.com. NORTHWEST Board approves employee raises 1401 Halsell • Bridgeport 940-683-1704 By MANDY BOURGEOIS The Northwest School Board approved a compensation plan for the 2010- 2011 school year, giving employees a 2.5-percent increase from the midpoint for each paygrade, as well as increasing the starting salary for teachers with no experience to $48,200. Last year, the district offered $47,500 to new teachers. Board trustee Davis Palmer said that he hopes the raise will highlight the board’s appreciation for the district’s teachers. “Hopefully our employees know how much we prize the value of the employees that we have,” he said. The board also heard a report on the career and technology programs, focusing on a first year review of the district’s three academies. The district debuted the Academy of Media Arts and Technology and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) at Northwest High School and the Academy of Medical Professionals at Byron Nelson High School this school year. The academies are fouryear programs in which students focus on career knowledge and skills. In their first year, the academies boast attendance rates higher than the overall high school attendance rate and high retention rates. The STEM beginning enrollment of 90 decreased to 76 at the end of the school year, the Academy of Medical Professionals beginning enrollment of 110 decreased to 106 and the Academy of Media Arts enrollment of 97 decreased to 89. Director of career and technology education Tony Neely said 237 of the students in the academies also participate in other electives, ranging from athletics to fine arts. Sixteen freshmen in the BNHS attendance zone attend academies at Northwest High School, while 21 students in the NHS attendance zone attend the Academy of Medical Professionals. In other business, the board reorganized, electing Mark Schluter president, Mel Fuller vice president and Josh Wright secretary. ! E-mail Mandy at mbourgeois@wcmessenger.com. Garn and Webb agreed that their volunteer labor was a benefit for the shelter. “It helps them because it gives them more space and more privacy,” Garn said. “It gets me out of school and gives me a chance to give back.” “Instead of getting paid, you get that good feeling at the end,” Webb added. Ben Blattner and Erik Elder, both 15 and with SADD, worked on clearing dead foliage from the thick bamboo along the back fence. SADD worked on several projects in Bridgeport Friday, stopping at the center to lend SkillsUSA a hand. “It’s good to help people who can’t help themselves,” Elder said. “It makes you feel good about doing something for somebody out of the kindness of your heart.” Marisol Banuelos with Decatur SkillsU- SA said that the cleaning efforts made the shelter more comfortable. “It makes it feel more like a home,” she said. “I’m just excited to be here and help Ashley Lee Keller High School We are proud of both of you and your accomplishments! Lee Marble, Tile & Granite 940-393-0941 Reach for the stars when looking toward the future out and make sure (other students) have fun while they’re here.” Executive director Pat Slayton echoed Banuelos’ statement. “It makes it seem more like home. (Clients) are here while they heal. When they come here, they are depressed. This will make it more like a home while they look at their resources to get out and live a violence-free life,” she said. Slayton said the work by the volunteers allowed the shelter to do things they would not be able to afford. Slayton also thanked Wise Hope board member Richard Streller and the city of Bridgeport for waiving permit fees. “The building was not usable and we have received bids of $10,000 to take it away,” she said. “The fact that it’s going to get done so quickly with so many organizations involved is just amazing. “Ricky Stutt has taken it and run. It’s just better than we could have hoped for. It’s such a blessing.” ! E-mail Mandy at mbourgeois@wcmessenger.com. Marshall Miller Era High School 115 S.
