DECATUR
Alcohol petition drive begins
Decatur voters will be
given the opportunity to
update the city’s alcoholic
beverage laws in November
if a current petition drive is
successful.
Decatur now allows the
sale of beer and wine for offpremises
consumption. The
cities of Bridgeport, Newark,
Rhome and New Fairview
allow the sale of all alcoholic
beverages for off-premises
consumption.
In Decatur, one of the
three petitions being circulated
would extend the area
that beer and wine could be
sold to areas annexed into
the city since the last election
in 2003.
“From an economic development
standpoint, this is
very important,” said Roy
Eaton, chairman of the Decatur
Economic Development
Corporation. “Several
of the areas annexed over
the past seven years are
prime locations for new
grocery stores, restaurants
and drug stores, but under
the current law, they would
not be able to sell beer and
wine.”
Both of Decatur’s largest
grocery stores, Walmart and
IGA Marketplace, sell beer
and wine as do many of the
convenience stores in the
city. The ability to sell alcoholic
beverages is a key factor
when new grocery and
drug stores are considering
locating in a city, Eaton said.
The planned CVS pharmacy
is in an area where beer and
wine sales already are allowed.
Another petition, being
backed by Chili’s and other
restaurants, would do away
with the private club membership
requirement for restaurants
with food and beverage
certificates.
“It’s a matter of convenience
for our customers,”
said Chris Allen, manager of
the Decatur Chili’s. Restaurants
and the Decatur Civic
Center must keep detailed
