Dear Neil: I have a 6-year-old<br />
Moonglow pear that has not yet borne<br />
fruit. The tree is very healthy and vigorous,<br />
but I want some pears. Is there<br />
anything else I can do, or should I use<br />
another variety<br />
Pears often grow strongly for several<br />
years before they finally become<br />
reproductive and bear fruit. Moonglow<br />
is a good variable and dependable producer<br />
once it gets established, hopefully<br />
soon. The variety Orient would<br />
be a second pear to try, should you ever<br />
decide to do so, but wait a bit longer.<br />
Dear Neil: I’ve attached photos of<br />
an Emory oak that has been struggling<br />
for a couple of years. A nurseryman<br />
suggested that it might be oak wilt, but<br />
he didn’t suggest anything for its cure.<br />
You can see that the leaves are quite<br />
spotted, and it’s this way year-round.<br />
Where do I start<br />
He may be correct. Oak wilt is a possibility,<br />
but you’d need to have a culture<br />
run on it. Send samples to the<br />
Plant Disease Diagnostic Laboratory<br />
at Texas A&M. You can read a lot more<br />
about oak wilt on the TAMU Plant Pathology<br />
Department’s website. Instructions<br />
on sending the plant sample will<br />
also be there. I fear the diagnosis may<br />
be correct from your photos.<br />
