an Arlington-based, nonprofit
organization that has
been working to convince
the city of Arlington to build
a public skatepark.
The organization was
named after a 15-year-old
who was hit and killed by
a car while walking to an
unauthorized skating spot.
The organization continues
to pressure the city to push
the project forward.
A few riders sponsored
by Dallas-based Citystars
Skateboards and Hype!
Skateboards arrived to give
a demonstration before the
contest began.
“I’d like to give special
thanks to the riders who
came out for a surprise
demo with the Shredderz
Team,” Reicheneker said.
The Citystars and Hype!
riders included Michael
Tang, Kechaud Johnson
and Ryan Strader.
Hype! representative P.J.
Thebeau and team manager
Mike Crum also made
an appearance. Crum is a
former professional skateboarder.
He’s appeared in
the X-Games, and as recently
as 2004 he was ranked
seventh in the world in the
vertical ramp competition.
37 hits.
“He did a real good job and improved
every outing,” Leps said.
“His record was not indicative of
how he pitched. He kept us in a lot
of tight games that we won late. He
had multiple games of double-digit
strikeouts.”
Waldrep said he pitched with more
confidence this season and had better
control.
“It was a good year,” he said. “Last
year, I was not very accurate. This
year, I got my curveball to work better
and in for strikes.”
Throwing strikes and getting
ahead of hitters was a strength for
Waldrep throughout the season.
“Every game we set goals, and one
was getting ahead of hitters,” Leps
said. “One game, he threw 16 firstpitch
strikes.”
In his final game against Burnet,
Waldrep allowed just one earned run
on two hits. He struck out nine and
walked two.
“I was mixing the ball up and
threw a lot more curveballs,” Waldrep
said.
Leps said it was his best outing of
the year.
That complete-game victory
capped a senior year in which Waldrep
also helped the Bulls football
team to the fourth round of the playoffs.
The hard-hitting linebacker was
named District 5-3A’s Co-Defensive
MVP.
“It could have been better, but I’m
happy how it went,” Waldrep said
about his senior year.
He was contacted by a few schools
about playing football, but he did not
pursue them. Waldrep just wants
to play baseball and get back to the
mound as soon as possible.
“I’m excited about playing,” Waldrep
said. “I’m already missing baseball.”
Blauser wins three rifle contests
On a trip over spring
break, Nathan Blauser and
his family met some members
of the University of
Wyoming rifle team.
The chance meeting
sparked the 12-year-old’s interest
in the sport, and just
three months later he is now
a champion shooter.
Blauser, of Aurora, won
three first-place trophies in
the novice class Saturday
and Sunday at the 11th Annual
Johnson County 4-H
Shotgun Sports Fandango
Buckle Shoot held in Fort
Worth.
It was the Chisholm Trail
fifth-grader’s second competition.
“It’s awesome,” Blauser
said about shooting. “I enjoy
it a lot. It’s a great bonding
opportunity and a way
to get to know people out of
school.”
Blauser had been to a
skeet-shooting range with
his father, Pat, in the past,
but did not get serious about
it until this spring. He now
practices at least once per
week.
“We shoot about 50 to 75
rounds,” Blauser said.
In last weekend’s competition,
Blauser hit 63 of the
100 sporting clays he shot
at. He connected on 17 of
the 25 skeets, 15 of the 25
trap targets and 19 of the 30
Whizbang clay targets.
Blauser said it’s a tough
sport.
“With the small clays,
you’ve got to be right-on
or you’re going to miss,” he
said.
Blauser, who practices
with Parker County 4-H
because Wise County does
not have a shooting team,
is planning to go to three
shoots in June.
He is hoping to stay in the
sport and shoot one day in
college.
“I want to go to [Texas]
A&M. They have a shooting
team there,” Blauser said.
