I did it!! It is time to
pass the baton. It
is the only way to
describe the duties
of the IKB President.
My race consisted of
the football games, the band reviews,
the lack of sleep, trips to Phoenix, band
camp, and this past year, the Knights of
Honor gala honoring Mr. Combes. I
saw the outpouring of love and respect
for him and all of his accomplishments;
I saw pictures of Mr. Combes from
age 11 to current shots; Tito with dark
wavy hair and many other pictures of
his family members and boosters.
In reflecting over the past year I remembered
why we pay for our kids to
go to ND. I don’t know another school,
much less another band program,
PASSING THE BATON
with the dedication, commitment and
love that the Irish Knight Band and
Notre Dame High School have for each
student and their family. I have seen
us rally around students in trouble, be
it health issues, family loss or simply
struggling with school. I have seen
parents give assistance, both financial
and emotional, to students who they
are not even related to. The concept
that we are all one family, here to love,
to appreciate each others’ gifts, and
help each other during tough times is
truly unique in this day and age...but
just a way of life at ND.
I would be remiss if I did not say,
“THANK YOU” to the amazing support
I have received not only from the
Booster Board, but all the Boosters, my

family, the students, the other school
organizations and especially the band
staff. I have always felt that I am a welcome
part of this family...kind of like
the crazy aunt everyone has.
And to Marty Cantwell, our new Band
Booster President, all I have to say is
I have enjoyed my run, and I will let
go of the baton - I know that you are
ready. You have trained for years and
are in peak shape to do this. I will slow
down as I see you take off, knowing
that while the course may never end,
it is each person’s effort to give their
personal best that
matters. I will see
you at the finish
line!
Thanks! Frequently at the end of the year I am asked to summarize the past year and my mind races through
a multitude of experiences and memories. I find it impossible to summarize it into a few sentences. We all
will have our own memories from our experiences this year in football band, parade band, basketball band, Dance/Flag
Team, Jazz Band, concerts and percussion competitions. To me the most important thing I can do now is to thank you all
for another memorable year in the IKB. For me it was year 42 and counting, and no two years have been the same. Each
one has created its own set of memories.
So:

• To the students who are staying – Thank You!
• To the parents in the Booster Club – Thank You
• To the Booster Board & Committee Chairs – Thank You!
Graduates, I hope your memories of the last four years are good and that you are proud of what you have accomplished
in the IKB. And graduates’ parents, thank you for sharing your sons and daughters with us. It hasn’t always
been easy, but I hope that it has proven to be worthwhile. We will miss them. To you all, thanks for another great year in
the tradition of the Irish Knight Band.
This year it is particularly important for me to thank all of you who expressed your support for me during the Knights of
Honor recognition and the NCEA award. These were two once in a lifetime events and I have to admit that I did not fully
comprehend the magnitude of these awards until after each event. Knights of Honor was particularly meaningful because
of the outpouring of support from parents and alumni. I truly did not realize the importance of the NCEA award until I
was in Minneapolis at the convention and was able to participate in a wonderful event. In the aftermath of that event, I
have heard from some of the brothers who taught at Notre Dame in the past and from whom I learned a great deal about
Catholic education. Both events were rewarding experiences and I am grateful for your support.

Every Parent’s Dream - It’s IKB - BC time
(a.k.a. BAND CAMP)
IKB’rs, enjoy your summer vacation. Sleep late. Get up. Watch TV. Eat cereal. Take
a nap. Skateboard with your friends. Go to the beach. Suck down a #2 combo from
In ‘n’ Out. Then go home, go to bed, and do it all over again. Why are we advocating
such a lazy summer Because on Aug. 15, all this will end and Band Camp will
start. IKB-BC: 8 days of rough, tough, get up at the crack of dawn, report at 9:30,
march non-stop for 12 hours in the blistering heat while learning your music band
camp. It’s Boot Camp, but instead of crawling through mud wearing a 40 lb. pack
and carrying a rifle, you’ll be marching in the 98 degree southern California heat,
carrying your music and wearing a 100 lb. tuba . Oh, and somehow, frozen fowl,
blindfolds and two-liter bottles will be involved. It’s all very mysterious but rest assured.
After Band Camp, the Irish Knight Band will be ready for the 2010 football
season. Go Knights! And remember, 1-2-3-11!

Band information is easy to find on the NDHS website. Go to www. ndhs.
org/band. Above the picture on the top left corner you will see the login tab.
If you use your household’s username and password (if you do not have one,
contact brady@ndhs.org) you will be able to access IKB’s Weekly Schedule
for up-to-date and printable information about upcoming performances,
report times, uniform reminders and meal requirements. Also, remember
look in your household’s email account for periodic notices and special instructions
and announcements. We often send emails when we need Booster
Parents to help with chaperoning, baked goods and special events from our
band email at news4bandbooster@me.com.
Be sure to let NDHS and IKB know if your e-mail account changes so you are
not left out.

Wanted
by IKB Truck Coordinator
Ever wanted to feel the wind blow
through your hair as you speed
down the open road, knowing that
you carry the treasures of the Irish
Knight Band.
Well here is your chance. No need
for a special license. You don’t need
any special training. All you do
need is the willingness to follow
(and sometimes lead) the band to
and from their musical destinations,
and a recent DMV report.
Stop by the band room to pick up a
form, or download it from the band
website...fill it out and turn it in to
Tito. Once cleared for takeoff, you
will be able to drive the most precious
vehicle the Irish Knight Band
has.

WE are PERCUSSIONISTS!!
Saturday, April 3rd our Percussion Ensemble competed in
the Southern California Percussion Alliance Championships
held at CSU San Bernardino. Notre Dame scored a resounding victory over
Downey HS and Westlake HS in the finals competition and was named champions
in the Scholastic Concert Open Division.
Each member was awarded a gold medal and the ensemble
received a championship banner to hang in the Band Center.
After three consecutive years of silver medal finishes this
is Notre Dame’s first gold medal finish in the competition.
Congratulations to Matt Pagnotta, Ross Cockrell and the
members of the ensemble: James Chuatoco, Shaun Valentine,
Paige Ellison, Andrew Newfield, Max Harold, Adam Hull, Kevin Coe, Bryanna
Kolpak, Gienelle Lopez, Jhosselinne Ramirez, Brandan Hill, Jeremy Mercado,
Alex Davalos, Tania Zakaria, Marissa Fiegueroa, Chris Jackson, Austin Sanchez,
Anthony Rios, and Cameron Enderson.

The Band Booster Club is a group of
dedicated parents who help the IKB
staff keep the band “marching on.” So
how can you help
* Every trip the band takes (parades,
away football games) requires a
contingent of chaperones and two
parents to drive the equipment truck.
* Every home football game necessitates
parents to pass out water
and snacks at halftime and feed the
students after the game.
* Every UCLA home game, every
swap meet and a smattering of special
events at the Rose Bowl require a
workforce of kids and parents to work
the concession stand. (Upcoming opportunities
include the UCLA games
and Rose Bowl swap meets)
* Band camp, parades, football games
and occasional band practices leave
our kids hungry, so we solicit baked
goods, fruit or other snack goodies
from the parents.

If you were lucky enough to attend
this past February’s band cake
breakfast you may have noticed
some terrific pancake baskets that
adorned all the tables. Well,Terry
McGaha, Director of Mission
Outreach, and the students of the
immersion
program took
those down to
the Midnight
Mission for
the homeless.
