Minnesota Evans Scholars
Alumni Newsletter Spring 2011
Hello, Alumni!
As the 2010 fall and winter months have now passed us by, Minnesota Evans Scholars
stand poised for the 2011 spring and summer months ahead. After an excellent first
semester filled with academic, philanthropic, and social events, this second semester
Evans Scholars are ready to imitate the recent masterstrokes while eliminating any
shortfalls.
Kaitlyn Hunt and I (Wylie Tueting), the new Minnesota Alumni Relations Coordinators,
would like to introduce ourselves. Hello! We are both very grateful and enthusiastic
towards our new positions. And we would like you to know that, with the advent of a
new year and its accompanying opportunities, we are optimistic to meet a personal goal
we both set to strengthen alumni relationships by establishing new, as well as honing in
on existing, Evans Scholars networks. We would very much appreciate any support or
help you can give us with this endeavor; you can start by keeping your eyes and ears
open for the annual Founder’s Day event, taking place this coming 16 th of May.
As for some exciting windfalls that have befallen some of our current and especially
outgoing Evans Scholars, Teach for American has chosen Janet Grom to work with for
the next two years down in Texas; the University of Minnesota Chemical Engineering
graduate department has chosen Andrew Ahlfield as a Masters Candidate; Justin Wong
recently returned from a semester-long study abroad trip in Hong-Kong; Dan Marquart
recently landed a lucrative internship in the investment banking sector with Lazard; and
the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management has recently chosen Lucas
O’Brien as a Masters Candidate pursuing Human Resources/Industrial Relations. For
each member of our outgoing senior class, leaving the Evans program proves a
bittersweet departure from their undergraduate career, but with each member of our
senior class already moving into high-ranking professional or academic fields, we have
little doubts that they will continue to carry the Evans Scholar honor with them wherever
their journeys may take them.
We would like to sincerely thank you for your continued support of the Evans Scholar
program. We look forward to interacting with you again very soon.
A message from the President
Greetings, all! Here at the Minnesota Chapter we have so much to look forward to this
semester, such as hosting our second blood drive here at the Evans House with the help
and prudence of our newly elected philanthropy chair, Nina Wong. We are also very

excited to participate as a team in this year’s Relay for Life, and are looking forward to
other spring events, such as New Scholar Weekend and Founder’s Day.
One of our main chapter initiatives this year, as well as one of the WGA’s main projects
of concern, is to cut back on our energy consumption by going green, as they say. We are
striving to accomplish this goal by installing water efficient showerheads in every room
and energy efficient automatic light switches in common areas. In addition, as the fall and
winter months have rolled by and the house has expended a considerable amount of
energy, we are presently working on inexpensive ways to more efficiently utilize our
energy.
Looking ahead, we are thrilled to stay involved in the community by continuing our
volunteer relationships with the MMJGA and The American Legion. Finally, we shall be
striving to vitalize our bond with the Evans Scholars Alumni by cultivating relationships
that can effectively expand the Evans Scholars network.
We greatly appreciate your continuous and generous support of the Minnesota Evans
Scholars.
New Scholar Update
Hello, my name is Paul Stadem, and I am the New Scholar Educator for the 2011
calendar year. After I recently met most of the forthcoming scholars at the scholarship
interviews in January, my initial impressions of the scholars proved very positive, and it
seems clear that we have a lot to look forward to. This year, New Scholar Weekend is set
for April 9 and 10 th , and it shall be very busy; activities include, but are not limited to,
bowling, billiards, BBQ, and the annual dodgeball tournament. To reach the goal of each
new scholar being able to achieve activation, I will be offering an additional library night
during the week, aimed primarily at new scholars who are in need of more productivity in
the library. In addition, I plan to judiciously pair new scholars with their sophomore
“parent” to ensure the best combination of compatible personalities. I think that these
things will help to allow for the best academic performance and overall satisfaction of
Evans Scholars’ group living. I am looking forward to a great year helping the new
scholars transition from high school or college and into the Minnesota chapter house.
