Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
SHARE THE BURDEN
C ome to me, all you
who labor and are burdened, and
I will give you rest” (Matthew
11:28). These words of our Savior
seem to be in stark contrast to the
previous chapter from the same
Gospel, when we were told that if
we do not take up our crosses, we
are not worthy of Christ.
Connecting these two messages
might help us on our faith
journeys. Being a follower of
Christ surely means that we must
embrace the cross, in its mystery
of both suffering and triumph.
This is something that we need
not do alone, for the burden is
often too heavy for us to carry by
ourselves. Who, then, do we turn
to We can turn to the Body of
Christ - the community of
disciples gathered for worship.
When we find the burden too
heavy, let us remember that we
can share that burden with our
Christian sisters and brothers,
who can help bring us rest.

THE INTRODUCTORY RITES
The Gloria
(Glory to God)
The Gloria was not originally
intended to be a regular part of
Roman (Latin Rite) Mass. It was
one of many ancient Christian
hymns composed in imitation of
other scriptural lyrics, such as the
psalms. Although it found its way
into the Mass on an occasional basis
(Christmas liturgy, Ordinations,
Masses presided by bishops, and
select festivals), it was not until late
in the sixth century that it was
accepted by the Church to be sung
at all festive Masses. Its original
place in the Mass was that of a song
or hymn to be sung by the people in
the assembly, rather than by an
exclusive choir or select members of
the clergy. There are three parts to
the Gloria: 1. The song of the angels
at the Nativity of Jesus. 2. Praise of
God. 3. Invocation of Christ. through
- out the text are echoes of the
Nicene Creed, which affirms the
ancient origins of this hymn.

Are we excused from
Mass during vacation
T his is actually a
common and unfortunate misconception.
As Catholics, we are bound to
attend Mass every Sunday and other
Holy Day of Obligation anywhere
the Catholic rite is celebrated either
that day or the evening before
(Canon 1247, 1248). Only a grave
cause such as the unavailability of a
priest or an infirmity may excuse us.
One primary reason for
attending Mass is to receive Jesus’
Body and Blood. That’s not just an
obligation but an amazing gift. The
Church doesn’t want us
to miss an opportunity to
meet with Christ for any
avoidable reason.
However, going to Mass
at a local church can be a fun way to
experience the local customs of
places we visit. While the Mass itself
doesn’t change, parishes may have
different ways of greeting visitors,
singing different hymns, or even
offer hospitality after Mass that can
help you get tips for places to visit
while you are there.

A VACATION IS NO VACATION WITHOUT MASS

4. God commanded us to keep holy the Sabbath, and Mass is the way a Catholic fulfills that
requirement. If God tells you to do something, it’s a good idea to do it.

Priests’ Study Week
As a way to provide continuing education for priests, each year the Archdiocese offers a study week during
the 2 nd and 3 rd week of June. So half the priests of our Archdiocese attended the 2 nd week and the other half
attended the 3 rd week. With the implementation of the 3 rd edition of the Roman Missal on the horizon
(Advent of 2011), the theme for this year’s Study Week was “The Spirituality of Mass.” It was a wonderful
way for us to reflect on the mass that we pray each day and to gain insights from different theologians.
Our guest speaker was Dr. Bob Hurd, who currently teaches at Santa Clara University, had taught at St.
Patrick’s Seminary, and had at one time been a seminarian. At the Seminary, he was one of my favorite
professors because he has the gift of introducing difficult topics with clarity, and he brings a joyful spirit to
his work. You might also be familiar with his name because he has composed and published many songs
found in our music issue, songs such as “Envia tu Espiritu” and “I want to Praise your Name.”
Among the different topics discussed was the use of chants in the Revised Roman Missal. Although the new
missal does not require us to use only chant music, but it was discussed as the Revised Missal includes them
and makes it available among a repertoire of different music that we already use. A few things stood out for
me in our discussion of the Liturgy of the Word. In an article by Mariano Magrassi, O.S.B. entitled “Praying
the Bible: An introduction to Lectio Divina,” he wrote that:
Prayer is, first of all, listening. So if we are truly listening, then we are already praying.
The ultimate goal of listening is obedience, total submission to the Word of God.
The mystery of the Word reveals its secrets not from teachers’ desks, but in churches and in the lives of
the saints. And the Bible is not only a book to read, to learn, to pray over… it is essentially a story to be
relived.
Perhaps the most interesting thing that happened all week, was trying to pray the mass in the “new” form each
day. Although we have discussed the changes and understood them, however, it is certainly difficult to break
old habits. For example, the new response to “The Lord be with you,” is “and with your spirit.” It is a
response praying that the Spirit of God that the priest received at ordination, may also be with him as he
celebrates the mass. Inevitably, many of us revert back to the current response of “and also with you.”
Even though we had a booklet to help us with our responses, however, juggling between that and our song
sheet showed us it was a little difficult. So we got a taste of how our parishioners might feel with the
upcoming changes and thought of different ways to make the transition less traumatic and smooth.
Fr. Paul Zirimenya, who is deaf and serves at St. Benedict Parish for the Deaf, said through an interpreter
that to calm his community who is anxious over any changes in their lives, that there are only 15 changes
in the New Missal that will affect them. He said that once people knew this, that calmed many of their fears.
The committee planning with me for the upcoming changes recommended that during the month of October,
we discuss these upcoming changes with you at Mass. Thank you for your support of the Archbishop’s
Annual Appeal that has made study weeks like these available to us.

ONE MINUTE MEDITATIONS
Write a note
There is something special about receiving a note
of encouragement or praise. St. Paul wrote one to
Timothy to encourage the young minister in his work:
“I yearn to see you again, recalling your tears, so that I
may be filled with joy” 2 Timothy 1:4. Unlike a comment
that is heard only once, a letter or note can be reread.
Consider sending an old fashioned note of encouragement,
consolation, praise, or love.
Plan a good day
Spend a few minutes each morning planning for
a good day. Picture, in detail, how you will spend the
next 24 satisfying hours. Imagine yourself doing good
and being a blessing to others. Then do all you can to
enjoy the day.
Holiness for all
According to Blessed Teresa of Calcutta,
holiness is the birthright of every human person. She
said, “Holiness is not a luxury for a few, but a simple
duty for everyone.”
50th Anniversary Mass of
Fr. Joseph S. Peixotto , CSC
The parish is invited to the 50th Anniversary Mass of
Fr. Joseph Peixotto on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at 10:00
AM at St. Brendan Church.
Fr. Joe is a Holy Cross missionary priest
who has lived and worked in Dhaka,
Bangladesh since his ordination. His
mother and father lived in the parish on
Idora Street from 1960 to 1979. His
sister and brother-in-law, Carole and
Martin Kilgariff, are long time parishioners.
Fr. Joe has spent the last 49 years at Notre Dame College
in Dahka as instructor and principal. He has devoted his
missionary life to providing education and social services
to the poor. His goal, and that of the Holy Cross Missionaries,
has been to empower the people they serve so that
the local people can lead the church with their talents and
gifts.
In 2004, he received the Oddo Service Award from the
University of Portland . This Outstanding Service Award
recognizes a University of Portland, Columbia University,
or Columbia Prep alumnus or alumna who has demonstrated
the University's mission through volunteerism in his
or her own community; helped prepare others for service to
God, neighbor, and the world; inspired others in their
service work by being a leader; and is living a life consistent
with the University's mission.
Fr. Joe has always been welcomed by the parishioners of
St. Brendan and hopes that you will join him for Mass on
July 9th. He also invites anyone traveling to Bangladesh to
visit the Holy Cross and he will give you a tour of the
Christian projects in the country.

PRAY WITH ALL YOUR HEART
Even the most prayerful person falls upon dry periods in
prayer. It can become routine, automatic, or even feel like
work. Yet prayer is lifting our hearts and minds to the
one who loves us most. With that in mind, try altering
your prayer routine.
Start with confession. It may seem
unnecessary to confess sins to the one
who sees our thoughts but prayerful
confession breaks down barriers between
us and God. When we are willing to hold
back nothing from him, we can sincerely
and humbly ask for forgiveness. Then we
pray with a clean heart and a clear
conscience.
Offer forgiveness. Ask God to forgive all those who
have trespassed against you, all who have caused you
suffering or given you insult or injury. Forgive them in
prayer and ask God to bless and help them.
Pray fervently. Your Father is listening, so make a petition,
beg God’s favor, ask for his blessing. Know that he
hears your requests and will grant all that is good for you.

Patron of youth, young women,, purity, and
victims of rape
Born: 1890
Died: 1902
Born in Corinaldo, Ancona, Italy, on October 16
1890; her farmworker father moved his family to
Ferrier di Conca, near Anzio.
Her father died of malaria and her
mother had to struggle to feed her
children.
In 1902 an eighteen-year-old
neighbor, Alexander, grabbed her
from her steps and tried to rape
her. When Maria said that she
would rather die than submit,
Alexander began stabbing her with
a knife. As she lay in the hospital, she forgave Alexander
before she died.
Her death didn't end her forgiveness, however.
Alexander was captured and sentenced to thirty
years. He was unrepentant until he had a dream that
he was in a garden. Maria was there and gave him
flowers. When he woke, he was a changed man,
repenting of his crime and living a reformed life.
When he was released after 27 years he went directly
to Maria's mother to beg her forgiveness, which she
gave. "If my daughter can forgive him, who am I to
withhold forgiveness," she said.
When Maria was declared a saint in 1950, Alexander
was there in the St. Peter's crowd to celebrate her
canonization. She was canonized by Pope Pius XII
in 1950 for her purity as model for youth.
She is called a martyr because she fought against
Alexander's attempts at sexual assault. However, the
most important aspect of her story is her forgiveness
of her attacker -- her concern for her enemy extending
even beyond death.
