Tea...
Hanaa Benrahal catches up with
Mr Tuffney over a cup of tea and
poses some interesting questions!
H: Firstly, thank you for agreeing to
do this interview – it’s really exciting.
We all know you as our wonderful
head teacher Mr T, but we’d
like to know a bit more about the
‘real’ Mr T. (Mr T ‘Oh yesss’)
So, what made you choose to do
teaching in the first place
Mr T: Ummm, well I didn’t become a teacher
until I was 28, so a lot of people of people become
teachers when they are 22-23 – they go
to university, then train to be a teacher. I was
working for the Early Learning Centre, but my
sister is a teacher and about 2 years before I
trained to be a teacher, my mum decided that
she wanted to be a teacher- she was 50-
something and she thought – yeah I’d like to be
teacher. Basically, they both said that I would
enjoy and my friends thought that I would be a
really good teacher and that I would enjoy it a
lot more than the job I was doing. So, I thought
yeah, let’s give it a go and I would say it has
been the best thing I’ve ever done. I love it!
H: We know you have fantastic ideas
like the homework challenges,
….with Mr T
LAFTA’s and Takeover day, but what
we’d really like to know is what has
been the highlight of your career so
far
Mr T: he highlight – ummmm – I think getting the
job here.
H: Just getting the job
Mr T: Well, Mrs Henchie - well you know how we
sometimes have student teachers here – learning
how to be a teacher We had quite a few
teachers that trained here. I had to go to three
different schools to do my training and Lowther
was the middle one – and I was in the Year 4
class. And, when I finished the training, I got a
book bag when I had to leave and go back to university.
And in the book bag Mrs Henchie had
given me a pen, but she also gave me a job application
form. (Mr T laughs). And then I came for
an interview and I got the job! And I think now
I’ve been here for 11 years, I think that was the
highlight - getting the job in the first place, being
a teacher – at what I think is the best school.
H: And now it’s your school!
Mr T: Well, it’s our school – yeah.
H: Well, it’s your school!
Mr T: No – it’s our school! My school, your
school, our school!
H: Have you always been a teacher
and if not, what were you doing before
you started teaching
Mr T: Ok, I haven’t always been a teacher. I
worked in what was called ‘Retail Management’.
So, I’m going to give you a couple of ‘claims to
fame’. I did lots of different things – I worked
for three different companies, including working
for Hamleys – you know, big Hamleys – the
biggest toy shop, well used to be biggest toy
shop in the world – which is in Regents Street.
But anyway, I did various different things -
some things when you start off (in doing those
things) I did a bit of work in the summer holidays
when I was a student – they got me doing
all sorts of crazy things – dressing up as a
clown and Postman Pat – all sorts of things.
Then, as I kind of developed that bit of my career,
I had to spend some time training the
staff in using a new toy – an interactive Barney
– it interacted with your computer. It was a
soft toy and when there was something on the
screen, Barney would start talking, he would
say “Can you find the blue square” and then
when they clicked on the blue square the toy
would say “You’ve found the blue square –
well done!” And I had to spend two days in a
room with Barney! So, that’s a little bit about
me. He (Barney) actually went on to become the
best selling toy that Christmas. You know Fur-
10

ies are back out I remember when we were
first given Furbies – this is when I worked for
the Early Learning Centre – and you had to take
one home to try it out and I didn’t really know
what it did. So, I put it on the car dashboard and
when you went around the corner it slid down
the car dashboard and you know what it went
It used to go ‘oooooooeeeeee’. And we used to
have queues outside to get Furbies and queues
outside to get Teletubbies – when they were
really popular – and Power Rangers – yeah. I
can’t remember what they question was. Have I
always been a teacher – No! Teaching is much
better.
H: One of the features in each issue
of the magazine is a question posed
to the press gang. We’d like to ask
you the same. This issue’s question
is “If you were a celebrity (dead or
alive) who would you be and why
Mr T: A celebrity Hmm, I’ll be honest…..
H: I had trouble with this one as
well….
……………I’m not a big fan of celebrities, unless
they have done something really worthy, ummm
– I always thought Mrs Henchie was a bit of a
celebrity – she did get an OBE – which is really
cool. I think in terms of people that I looked up
to; I used to like Michael Jordan who was a basketball
player. What I like about him was that he
was a team player, but also, when it came to
winning he always used to go that extra mile, so
I’d probably say him. In terms of other people
I’d like to be, there’s a lot of people who have
made a difference around the world and I like
celebrities that kind of make me laugh. People
like Alan Partridge – he’s funny and ‘The Office’.
H: What is your favourite meal and
how often do you have it
Mr T: My favourite meal, honestly Hanaa, I love
food. I don’t think I could name a favourite meal
– I just love food. There is very little that I
won’t eat, seriously, very little. I genuinely love
good food. I like savoury food and I like sweet
food. I like foods from around the world – curries,
yeah – all sorts. Um, I don’t like it when
teenagers just give me hot chillies like they did in
cooking yesterday – they played a little joke on
me. They said “Mr T, try this chilli” and I was like,
yeah, I’m not going to eat that. They said “Try it,
it’s not hot, it’s just sweet.” and I was like yeah,
I’m not falling for that one. And then Callum says
“No, I’ve got one, look.” And he ate it!
H: Was it a different one
Mr T: Yeah – his was a red pepper. I ate the
chilli and my face started getting redder and
redder and redder. They were all in hysterics. I
was not impressed with that. I love all food – its’
one of the things that I love about Lowther – we
do so much cooking. I’ve had a few good meals
here – I can tell you! I look forward to when you
lot do the Year 6 meal because that is always
gorgeous! No pressure!
H: What is your favourite film Why
do you like it so much
Mr T: I think you know what my favourite film is.
H: No I don’t!
Mr T: We watched it in Literacy recently.
H: La Vita Bella!
Mr T: Yeah – life is beautiful is my favourite film
ever since it came out really. The reason I like it
is – well I don’t like it, I love it – because the
messages it gives you is one of how important
family is and how important people are – even
when things are hard – to try and be happy and
positive. Guido is amazing as a character isn’t
he Even when he was about to die he was still
in the joke. He did the funny walk didn’t he Past
the guard. It’s a very emotional film.
H: I had a lump in my throat.
Mr T: Me too. You know a little bit more about me
now, don’t you
H: What is your favourite song
Why
Mr T: One of my things that I do is that I’m a bit
of a music nut. I’ve got a lot of music at home –
a lot of music! So to choose one song, I couldn’t.
H: I’ll let you have three!
Mr T: Ummm – you’ll let me have three
H: Top three!
Mr T: See, what I like about music is that different
songs are good for different moods. So, like
if you’re feeling chilled out you might like a certain
type of song. If I’ve got to drive somewhere
and I’ve got to get there quickly I might put
something a bit more ‘up tempo’ on. I can tell you
the styles of music that I like.
H:OK!
Mr T: I’ll tell you what I do, I do a mix at Christmas
for all the people at work and my friends rather
than send them a Christmas card –so they get a CD
of music – or they can download it! I can give you a
sneak preview of what this year’s mix is going to
include.
H: Exclusive for this issue!
Mr T: Yes – it is exclusive and the staff can let me
know what they think of it. I’d be very happy for the
children to listen to the mix as well if they would
like. It’s all – do you know what a ‘cover version’ is
H: No.
Mr T: They are songs that other people have copied
or remixed or different versions of an original song
that people would know. I did something similar last
year. Have you seen the ‘Sound of Music’ Do you
know the song (sings) “These are a few of my favourite
things” Well, there is a jazz version of this
which I’ve included on the CD. If you go on ‘Sound
Cloud’ you can listen to last year’s mix.
H: As I said at the beginning, we want
to know a bit more about the ‘real’ Mr T.
Could you share with our readers the
naughtiest thing you did at school
Mr T: The naughtiest thing I did at school Ummm -
I was a good boy.
H: Is that so
Mr T: What do your reckon is the naughtiest thing I
did
H: Ummm – maybe you played a prank
on the teachers
Mr T: I did play a few pranks –but they were kind of
appropriate pranks – if that makes sense.
H: There’s no such thing as an
‘appropriate prank’.
Mr T: If I ever got told off at school, it would be for
something like talking too much or playing the fool!
Do you know what that means So that’s all I really
got into trouble at school for really. I did get one
report when I was a secondary school where the
teacher said – “If Mark ever stops talking, he might
actually do well!” (laughs). You know now that I like
to talk and play a joke or two! So, I can’t tell you anything
outrageous, because I haven’t really done
anything outrageous.
H: Well thank you for sharing all of that
with us and I hope we’ll speak again
soon.
The Story of
Rosa Parks
By Chelsie Jones
Rosa Parks was an incredibly magnificent
lady—especially when she stood up for
herself. WAIT!!!! Let me tell you what
happened……….
Rosa Parks was on the bus on her way
home from her job (as a clothes designer)
when a white man with two ladies next to
him arrived. They got the bus driver after
waiting a couple of seconds as Rosa would
not vacate her seat for them. Patiently
and disappointedly the bus driver was
disturbed and got out of his seat. He
demanded Rosa Parks to get out of the
seat she was sitting on.
She said, “No.” He
threatened her to get
out of that seat, or he
had to call the police.
After a while she
decided to answer, “I
don’t care,” and she was
thinking ‘just because
we are brown it doesn’t
mean we do not have
rights’. The driver was
amazingly surprised. So
he called the police like
he warned Rosa he was
going to do. Finally the
police came and said
kindly “Please may you
get out of this seat for
this white gentleman”
Rosa asked, “Why can’t
you change the law”
“It’s not my job.” replied
the policeman.
So they took Rosa Parks
away to have her finger
prints taken.
Lastly, Martin Luther
King gave this marvelous
speech about his dream
which was about white
people and black people
being friends…………...
Woof! What an amazing
and true story!
By Nada
Learning at Lowther is
sensational. We learn in
a variety of ways. The
way we have experienced
art in Year 6 means that we
have all produced outstanding
pieces. (Have a look on
Hanaa and Leah’s art page).
The colour in pop art has inspired
me the most and I
love the way we make
things relevant to our learning
topics.
Mr Tuffney teaches the
whole school times tables in
a really fun way using cartoon
clips and songs.
Someone over
there looks a bit
like me!
I’d like to learn in
that class! Their
learning is going
through the
‘woof’!
Sports Update
By Victor White (Sports
Correspondent)
Our football club has made a strong
start to the season with an impressive
score of 5-3 and 4-2! Keep it up.
We have also joined a seven aside
league I hope we win it!
The basketball team is now up and
running! Can we win the treble two
years in a row
The school has started a
hockey club for the first time
ever, I hope it turns out to be
as successful as our other
sports teams!
The netball team has
participated in its first
tournament and we
came 3 rd with 9
Can I play
Woof!
points.
Thanks Adam—I’d give
that a go if I ever
stopped skipping!
Step 1 - The Cross
Find the side with the white square in the centre. Try and find all the
middle pieces for the white side. When you have found all the white
middle pieces, put one of the four white squares on the white side.
When you have found all four of the middle pieces, identify where
they go so you can just slot them in. This might take a bit of practise
but at the end you will do it!
Step 2 - Position the white edges correctly
You have now got a cross on the white face (yellow in the picture). Now I
will explain how to get the white edges in the correct place. As you can see
on the right there is a cross under the the incorrect edges and a tick on the
correct edges. If you already have the edges in the correct places, move on
to the next step. If you have a cross with the edges in the wrong places,
stay on this step until you have completed the task. Look at one face (don’t
move the cube) and twist all the faces twice. This will place the white edges
into the opposite face. When you have done this, concentrate on one
edge piece. Look under the white edge piece. It could be any colour. Twist
the upper face until the colour under the white edge matches the piece
under it. After that twist that face with the correct edge to make it go onto
the white face. Do this with all the white edges.
These cubes have
had such a pawsitive
influence!
