Boys’ Basketball
The team was selected by the Telegram & Gazette staff with the help of a panel of coaches.
Keith Brown
Marlboro High
Junior
The 6-foot-1, 170-pound Brown transferred
to Marlboro from Dorchester
High this winter and paired with fellow
Super Teamer George Jordan to help
the Panthers to the Division 1 Central
Mass. final. Jordan passed the
1,000-point milestone this season and
will head into his senior year at Marlboro
with more than 1,300 career points. He
finished second in Mid-Wach B scoring
to Jordan, averaging 20.6 points per game. The duo
helped coach Ilya Nicholas and the Panthers to a 19-4
record with postseason wins over South and Wachusett.
At Dorchester, he was a Boston City League all-star last
season and won the All-City dunk contest as a sophomore.
He was also a league all-star as a freshman and
earned the Freshman of the Year award. Brown enjoys
listening to music while he practices basketball and hopes
to continue his success in the sport. His most memorable
sports moment is playing St. John’s in the Division 1 final.
He is the son of Keith and Melanie Brown.
Kyle Dobson
Fitchburg High
Junior
The 5-foot-11, 160-pound Dobson
helped Paul DiGeronimo’s club to the
Mid-Wach A title with a 20-3 record and
a berth in the Division 1 semifinal. Dobson
was named to the Mid-Wach A allstar
team, averaging 11 points per game.
Dobson made an impact last winter as a
sophomore, starting the last five games
of the season. Dobson started off strong
this season, scoring 13 points in the
opener against Oakmont, then chipping in 22 points in
a win over Gardner in the third game of the season.
Dobson continued to have big games for Fitchburg,
scoring 20 points in a win over Milford and 17 in a loss
to St. Bernard’s. Dobson and teammate Luis Diaz-
Ramos fueled Fitchburg in the postseason as the Red
Raiders registered a win over North before falling to
eventual state finalist St. John’s by two points. He is the
son of Silas Dobson of Fitchburg.
Michael Dziczek
West Boylston High
Senior
The 6-foot-6, 210-pound Dziczek is a
four-time Mid-Wach D all-star and was
named the MVP this season after finishing
second in the league with 17.5
points per game. He earned MVP honors
last year as well and led the Lions to
two consecutive Clark Tournament Small
Schools championships. He was a
senior captain for coach Paul Constantino.
Dziczek’s brother, Matt, was a
two-time Mid-Wach D all-star in 2005 and ’06. Dziczek
played in the AAU National Tournament in 2005 and has
passed the 1,000-point plateau at West Boylston. He says
those two accomplishments, along the Clark Tournament
titles comprise his most memorable sports moments. He
helped the Lions to a 19-2 record this season, but West
Boylston was upended in a quarterfinal by Division 3
champion Bromfield. He enjoys collecting cards and
sports memorabilia in his spare time and is undecided on
where to attend college next fall. He is the son of Brenda
Provencher and David Dziczek of West Boylston.
John Genkos
Doherty High
Junior
One of the area’s best shooters,
Genkos helped the Highlanders to
the Inter-High title and led the league
in scoring with 19.2 points per game.
Genkos was named co-MVP of the
league for his efforts. His most memorable
sports moment came in this
year’s Division 1 quarterfinal against St.
John’s when he drained a tying
3-pointer to force overtime, but the
Pioneers rallied to win and end Doherty’s season. Genkos
and teammate Marquis Rose helped coach Ed
Capstick and Doherty to a 15-6 mark this season. Also
a standout wide receiver for the Highlanders football
team, Genkos hopes to become a teacher or own his
own business and coach basketball when he gets older.
Genkos’ cousin, Ryan Keddy, earned a Super Team
spot this winter for his play on Worcester’s hockey
team. Genkos enjoys playing Madden and NBA Live in
his spare time, and also enjoys watching television and
camping. He is the son of Theodore and Veda Genkos
of Worcester.
Andrew Groth
Uxbridge High
Senior
The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Groth capped
off a tremendous senior year for the
SWCL East champion Spartans, finishing
third in the SWCL East scoring race with
an average of 16 points per game and
helping Uxbridge to the Clark Tournament
Large School final. Groth was the
fifth player in school history to reach
1,000 points and finished his illustrious
career with 1,070 points. He is a threetime
SWCL East all-star and last season was named to the
T&G Division 2 all-star team. Groth helped the Spartans and
coach Mark Donahue to a 17-6 record before falling to
eventual champion Tantasqua in the Division 2 semifinal.
Groth is also a standout baseball player for the Spartans,
and while he is undecided on his college choice, he hopes
to play basketball at the next level. He enjoys playing poker
and listening to music in his spare time and feels anytime
his teams beat rival Northbridge High is his most memorable
sports moment. His father, Tom, is the all-time leading
scorer in Babson College history. He is the son of Thomas
and Maureen Groth of Uxbridge.
Tim Henault
St. Bernard’s
Senior
The 6-foot, 180-pound Henault finished
second in the Central Mass.
Conference scoring race with an average
of 19.8 points per game. Henault
helped St. Bernard’s to a spot in the
Division 2 Central Mass. final, but the
Bernardians fell to Tantasqua for the
second consecutive season. He helped
St. Bernard’s to a 20-4 mark and finished
with 1,041 career points for coach
Mark Pierce. He is only one of eight players in school
history to reach 1,000 points. A three-year starter for St.
Bernard’s, Henault was named a co-captain this year and
said his most memorable moment was playing in the state
and district finals. As a sophomore, Henault came off the
bench as a part of a St. Bernard’s team that went to the
Division 2 state final before falling to Duxbury. During his
three varsity seasons, the Bernardians won 59 games.
Henault is undecided on where to attend college next fall.
He is the son of Scott and Stephanie Henault of Lunenburg.
George Jordan
Marlboro High
Senior
The 6-foot-4, 200-pound Jordan
capped a tremendous career at
Marlboro, bringing the Panthers to the
Division 1 final and leading the Mid-
Wach B in scoring with 22.1 points per
game. A two-time T&G Super Teamer,
Jordan surpassed 1,000 points and
1,000 rebounds at Marlboro, was
nominated for the McDonald’s All-
America team and was selected the
Boston Globe West Player of the Year. A two-year captain
and four-time MetroWest Daily News all-star, Jordan was
also named the offensive MVP in football last fall for the
Panthers as one of the area’s top wide receivers. Jordan is
still undecided on where to attend college next fall, and
may attend a prep school. His sister, Danielle Jenkins was
a 1,000-point scorer at Marlboro before going on to a very
successful career at Salem State, earning all-conference
honors. Jordan fondly remembers a slam dunk in last
year’s Division 1 semifinal against Holy Name where he
drew a foul and finished the dunk as one of his most memorable
sports moments. He is the son of Michael and
Christine Jordan of Marlboro.
Matt LaBove
St. John’s High
Junior
Only a junior, the 6-foot-9,
235-pound LaBove is already making
his second appearance on the
T&G Super Team after helping Bob
Foley’s Pioneers to the Division 1 state
final this year. LaBove was third in the
Central Mass. Conference scoring race
with 15.2 points per game and helped
St. John’s to a 21-6 record. Playing in
the state championship at the DCU
Center was his most memorable sports moment. LaBove
and teammate David White earned a spot on the T&G
Super Team this year. LaBove was named to the Boston
Globe West first team all-star squad this year and
earned an invite to the 2007 New England Top 75
team. As a mark on how special of a player LaBove is,
he is only the second junior to be named a captain by
Foley in his 45 years of coaching. He enjoys playing
basketball and listening to music in his spare time.
While he is undecided on a college choice, he hopes to
become a doctor after he graduates. He is the son of
Pamela and Charles LaBove of Shrewsbury.
Mitchell Renshaw
Wachusett Regional
Senior
The 6-foot-5, 205-pound Renshaw
was named the Mid-Wach A MVP
after finishing second in scoring with
an average of 17.5 points per game.
Renshaw is a three-time Mid-Wach A
all-star and served as a captain for
coach Tom Gibbons this season.
Renshaw helped the Mountaineers to
a 18-4 mark before falling to Marlboro
in a CMass Division 1 semifinal. Renshaw
also plays volleyball for the Mountaineers in the
spring and made the Mid-Wach all-star team last year
after recording a school-record 40 blocks. He is undecided
on where to attend college next fall, but is leaning
toward Clark University. Renshaw hopes to follow into
his church ministry after graduation or own his own
business. He enjoys going to church, reading, playing
sports and hanging out with friends in his spare time.
His most memorable sports moment is playing in Senior
Night at his last home game for Wachusett Regional this
year. He is the son of Greg and Laurie Renshaw of
Rutland.
Naadir Tharpe
St. Peter-Marian High
Sophomore
The 5-foot-11, 165-pound Tharpe is
regarded as one of the best point
guards in the state and proved it this
season by leading the Cental Mass.
Conference in scoring with a staggering
26.5 points per game average. The
Guardians finished 7-13, but played
strong basketball late in the year, racking
up wins over eventual Division 3
finalist Sutton and Division 1 state finalist
St. John’s. Tharpe recalled the win over the Pioneers as
his most memorable sports moment. In that game, Tharpe
made a pair of free throws with 5.4 seconds left and finished
with a game-high 31 points. He also surpassed the
1,000-point milestone as just a sophomore, earning the
achievement in a win over South High. Tharpe scored 18
of his 43 points while bringing the Guardians back from a
10-point deficit with four minutes to play to get the win. He
will attend Brewster Academy next year and hopes one day
to play in the National Basketball Association. When he’s
not on the basketball court, he enjoys music and watching
ESPN. He is the son of Lori Tharpe of Worcester.
Brian Vayda
Tantasqua Regional
Senior
The 6-foot-5, 205-point Vayda makes
his second appearance on the T&G
Super Team and helped the Warriors to
a 24-1 mark that culminated in their
second consecutive appearance in the
Division 2 state final. Under Vayda,
Tantasqua put together a remarkable
49-game winning streak that included a
Division 2 state championship last winter.
A two-year captain for coach Jeff
Child, Vayda surpassed the 1,000-point mark and was
named the Central Mass. Player of the Year, averaging
21.4 points and more than 10 rebounds per game while
leading the team in steals. He enjoys ping-pong and playing
Guitar Hero and Wiffle Ball in his spare time. He is
undecided on where to attend college, but has narrowed
down his choices to RPI or Clark Universtiy. He hopes to
play basketball and earn a business degree in college. His
older brother, Kevin, was also a Super Teamer for Tantasqua,
but Brian is quick to “point out” he does everything
better in basketball than Kevin. He is the son of Jim and
Joan Vayda of Sturbridge.
David White
St. John’s High
Sophomore
Only a sophomore, White earned his
first appearance in the Super Team
thanks to his work in the backcourt for
the Pioneers. White and fellow Super
Teamer Matt LaBove helped St. John’s
reach the Division 1 state final, which
White recalls as his most memorable
sports moment. White averaged 13.9
points per game for St. John’s this year
and looks to be a leader for Bob Foley’s
Pioneers next winter. During St. John’s postseason run,
White hit a winning shot against Fitchburg and banged a
key hoop against Marlboro in the final, giving St. John’s a
four-point lead with 47 seconds left. White scored 12
points in the Central Mass. final to help the Pioneers to
their 15th Central Mass. Division 1 championship. He
enjoys playing basketball, going to the Boys & Girls Club
and listening to music in his spare time. A resident of
Worcester, he is the son of Michelle Moore and David
White.
A
Ashton helped the Patriots defeat Doherty in the Inter-High
memorable sports moments, along with a win over Wachusett
that ended a 15-year drought against the Mountaineers.
Ashton enjoys playing basketball and hanging out
with friends in her spare time and will attend Anna Maria
next fall with an eye on becoming a forensic pathologist
when she graduates. Her sister, Sascha, and brother,
Rob, were both all-stars at Burncoat and Worcester State
College. She is the daughter of Margaret and Robert
Ashton of Worcester.
Cailin Bullett
Millbury High
Junior
Making her second appearance on
the T&G Super Team, Bullett
helped the Woolies to their second
title and a berth in the state final. Bullett
is already Millbury’s all-time points
and assists leader and has made the
All-SWCL East team the past three
seasons. Bullett says winning back-toback
Division 2 titles and playing at the
DCU Center this season in the state final are her most
memorable sports moments. Bullett averaged 9.3 points
per game for Steve Reno’s squad this year. As a sophomore,
Bullett helped the Woolies to their first league
championship in 52 years and the school’s first Central
Mass. title. Millbury repeated as league champion this
year with a 10-0 mark. While a college decision is still
pending, Bullett hopes to play basketball at the next level
and study law or history. Her father, Thomas, earned
All-New England honors playing for the Worcester State
basketball team.
Danielle Coffey
Westboro High
Senior
The 6-foot-1 Coffey completed a
memorable basketball career,
leading the Rangers to the Division 1
state semifinal in her senior season.
Coffey is a three-time Mid-Wach B
each of Westboro’s Central Mass. playoff wins against
the Naps, Algonquin and Shepherd Hill. Coffey was part
of a team that finished 18-4 in 2006 and 22-1 in 2007.
Coffey earned a spot on the T&G volleyball Super Team
in the fall, having broken school records for career
blocks and kills and season records for blocks, kills and
hitting percentage while leading the Rangers to the Division
1 state title. She is the daughter of Sandy and Kevin
Coffey of Westboro.
Lekia Cowen
Hopedale High
Cowen capped a tremendous high
school career, leaving as Hopedale’s
all-time leading scorer with
earning league co-MVP honors in basketball as a sophomore.
She was also a Central Mass. all-star in soccer as
degree after she graduates from college. She is the
daughter of Lindsey and John Cowen of Hopedale.
Shea Donnelly
Fitchburg High
in the Mid-Wach A scoring race,
finishing in the top 10 in each of her
four seasons. Donnelly averaged 14.5
1,000-point mark. A two-time T&G
Super Teamer, Donnelly was named
to the Mid-Wach A all-star team the
last two seasons and earned a spot
on the Fitchburg Sentinel & Enterprise
all-star team the past three years. A two-year captain
for Fitchburg, Donnelly leaves the Red Raiders with
1,091 career points while playing for her father, John.
Gaumond completes an incredible
She was also a three-time field hockey
Quaboag has won the Division 3 basketball title for the
past six years, and after winning the state title in 2006,
the Cougars returned to the state final the past two seasons
but came up short. Gaumond says being on teams
that won the 2006 state basketball title and the 2007
state field hockey title were her most memorable sports
moments. Gaumond, a three-time Division 2 state field
hockey player of the year, will play for Boston University
next year on a full scholarship. She is the daughter of
Maryjane and Frank Gaumond of Warren.
seasons and the all-state team the past two. Kristiansen
enjoys hanging out with friends, going to the beach and
playing sports in her spare time. Undecided on where to
attend college, Kristiansen hopes to major in business
finance or marketing. She is the daughter of Sandra and
Henning Kristiansen of Westboro.
Theresa Logan
Algonquin Regional
Junior
Logan was named the Mid-Wach A
MVP after leading the league with a
16.6 points per game average for the
Tomahawks, who won the league title
for the third consecutive season.
Logan also picked up MVP honors in
the Nashoba Invitational Tournament
and was named to the all-tournament
team in the Westboro Tournament.
Logan is also a standout volleyball
player for Algonquin and will captain the volleyball and
basketball teams next year. Logan plays AAU basketball
and enjoys singing and scrapbooking in her spare time.
Algonquin finished 17-5 and lost to eventual state finalist
Westboro in the CMass Division 1 Tournament, and
Logan says her team’s 41-36 win over Shrewsbury in a
quarterfinal was her most memorable sports moment.
As a sophomore, Logan finished second in the league
in scoring. She is the daughter of Robin and Justin
Logan of Southboro.
Lauren O’Connor
Shepherd Hill Regional
Senior
A
two-year team MVP and captain,
O’Connor helped the Rams reach
season and averaged 7.1 points for
Shepherd Hill. With O’Connor, the
Rams went to the district final or semifinals
in each of her four seasons.
O’Connor was a SWCL West all-star as
a junior and a senior and led the team in
assists. O’Connor was also a standout
soccer player for Shepherd Hill, earning a spot on the
T&G Division 1 all-star team last season and was a SWCL
West all-star and team MVP the past two years. She was
also an all-state as a senior on the soccer pitch. O’Connor
says her team’s win over rival Quaboag in basketball
last year — a win that snapped the Cougars’ 50-game
winning streak and the first Shepherd Hill win over Quaboag
in five years — was her most memorable sports
moment. O’Connor, who will attend Tufts University in the
fall, enjoys sports, shopping and spending time with
friends. She is the daughter of Karen and Daniel O’Connor
of Dudley.
Anh-Dao Tran
Holy Name
Sophomore
Making her first appearance on the
T&G Super Team, Tran helped
Holy Name to a 14-8 mark before
falling to Westboro in a Division 1 quarterfinal.
Tran led the Central Mass.
Conference with a 13.1 points per
game average for coach Barry Finneron.
Tran earned a spot on the all-star
team in the Acton-Boxboro Tournament
and helped Holy Name to the Central
Mass. title last year as a freshman. Tran plays basketball
year-round, but when she’s not on the court, she enjoys
going to the Y and talking and hanging out with friends.
She hopes to become a sports psychologist after she
graduates from college. Tran feels last year’s run to the
district title and how the Holy Name squad has developed
into a family as her most memorable sports moments.
She is the daughter of Kevan and Phuong-Thao Tran of
Webster.
Jewel White
Doherty High
Senior
The 6-foot White helped the Highlanders
to an 18-4 record before
losing to Shepherd Hill in the Central
Mass. Division 1 Tournament. White is
a two-time Super Teamer in basketball
and made the volleyball Super Team
in the fall. A four-year starter for
coach Jim Reynolds, White was captain
of the basketball and volleyball
teams this year. White led the Inter-
High in scoring (20.3 ppg) and was named co-MVP in
the league. White celebrated her 18th birthday this
season by scoring her 1,000th career point, which
ranks as her most memorable sports moment. She
enjoys hanging out with friends and writing poetry in
her spare time and will attend Franklin Pierce University,
hoping to major in communications or law. She
is the daughter of Valery White of Worcester.
Julie Winn
Sutton High
Junior
The 5-foot-11 Winn helped the Suzies
to the Central Mass. Division 3 final
and was the second-leading scorer in
the Dual Valley Conference, averaging
16.3 points per game. Winn was
named the DVC MVP for the second
year in a row. She is also a standout
soccer player for Sutton, earning allstar
spots on the DVC, Central Mass.
and state teams after helping the
Suzies reach the Division 3 final for the second consecutive
season. As an eighth-grader, she was on Sutton’s
state championship soccer team, which ranks as her
most memorable sports moment. Winn enjoys playing
soccer, AAU basketball and hanging out with friends in
her spare time. Her brother, Tim, is a former T&G all-star
and soccer player of the year and earned an All-America
nomination at Babson College. Her aunt is Barbara
Marois, a former Olympic field hockey player. She is the
daughter of Nancy and David Winn of Sutton.
F4 SUNDAY TELEGRAM APRIL 20, 2008
Hockey
The team was selected by the Telegram & Gazette staff with the help of a panel of coaches.
Patrick Army
Shrewsbury High
Senior, Goalie
The 5-foot-9, 165-pound Army backstopped
the Colonials to a 12-5-5
record, Roy Conference championship
and a berth in the Central Mass. Division
3 quarterfinals. Shrewsbury’s MVP as a
junior and senior, Army posted a 1.60
GAA and .930 save percentage this
season, which included the Colonials’
first win over cross-town rival St. John’s
in 21 years. Army made 37 saves in the
5-3 victory, a moment he considers his most memorable
in sports. “We put a lot of shots on the net,” St. John’s
coach Brian Murphy said after the game. “Their goaltender
played well.” A Central Mass. all-star, Army also played
well in Shrewsbury’s overtime playoff win over Littleton. He
plays varsity lacrosse at Shrewsbury, will attend Suffolk
University in the fall and hopes to open his own business
someday. He is the son of Ann and Tim Army of Shrewsbury.
Scott Brady
Westboro High
Senior, Center/Wing
The 6-foot, 185-pound Brady was
one of the most dominant players
in Central Mass. this season. His 24
goals led all Quinn Conference
scorers and helped the Rangers
finish 11-8-2 and advance to the
postseason. A returning Central
Mass. all-star, Brady was twice
named to the Metro West all-tournament
team. He was also MVP of the
Rangers’ football team this year, earning Division 1A
all-star honors and an invitation to play in the Shriners
Bowl. Brady has also played lacrosse at Westboro. His
brother, Chris, graduated from Westboro in 2005 and
also accumulated 100 points for the Rangers’ hockey
team. In fact, Chris reached that plateau on a goal
scored by Scott. An honors student, Brady will study
management and engineering at WPI in the fall. He is
the son of Amy Golino and Mark Brady of Westboro.
Ian Davis
Auburn High
Senior, Wing
The 5-foot-8, 150-pound Davis
missed part of the season with a
separated shoulder, but returned
in time to help the Rockets rally to
reach the postseason by tying for
second in the Quinn Conference. In
the playoffs, Auburn surprised everyone
by reaching the semifinals of the
Central Mass. Division 3 Tournament.
The Rockets, who finished with a
10-10-3 record, eventually lost to
Hudson, but not before beating Westboro and upsetting
Marlboro. Davis’ most memorable sports moment is
reaching last year’s district final, which Auburn lost in
overtime to Gardner at the DCU Center. A three-year
member of the varsity and two-year captain, Davis also
competes in outdoor track for the Rockets. Davis will
continue his education and hockey career at the Hoosac
School in New York in the fall. He is the son of Karen and
Michael Davis of Auburn.
Jon Gould
Hudson High
Senior, Center/Defense
The 5-foot-7, 150-pound Gould had
over 20 points for the Hawks, who
won the Quinn Conference title and
advanced to the Central Mass. Division
3 championship game. A Central Mass.
all-star the past two seasons and a T&G
Divisional all-star last year, Gould
helped Hudson to playoff wins over
Shrewsbury and Auburn. He notched a
hat trick in the final against Gardner,
but it wasn’t enough to earn the Hawks their first title
since 1991. The Wildcats erupted for three secondperiod
goals, but you could hardly blame Gould, who
logged Ray Bourque-like minutes while playing forward
and defense. Gould, who enjoys lifting weights and fishing
in his spare time, also plays varsity baseball for Hudson.
Undecided about college, he hopes to become a
police officer someday. He is the son of Lindy and Billy
Gould of Hudson.
Corey Grenier
Gardner High
Senior, Defense
The 5-foot-11, 170-pound Grenier
helped the Wildcats win their second
straight Central Mass. Division 3
title, defeating Hudson in the final at the
DCU Center. A four-year member of the
varsity and two-year captain, he was
twice named a Central Mass. all-star
and team co-MVP. His most memorable
sports moment is winning the Central
Mass. championship last year when
Gardner entered the tournament as a heavy underdog.
One of many talented players on the Wildcats’ roster,
Grenier also plays golf at Gardner High and hopes to
attend Western New England College or UMass-Lowell in
the fall. His career goal is to become an industrial engineer.
Grenier enjoys camping and playing lacrosse in his
spare time. His father played semipro hockey in the ’70s
and’80s. He is the son of Sandra and Bruce Grenier of
Gardner.
Ryan Keddy
Worcester Tech
Senior, Center/Wing
The 5-foot-9 Keddy accumulated 121
points during his four-year career on
the Worcester co-op team. The young
Wildcats won only three games this
year, but Keddy helped Worcester
reach the postseason as a junior. He
was among the Quinn Conference
leading scorers and contributed three
assists in the Wildcats’ playoff-clinching
victory over Wachusett. A team captain
and Central Mass. all-star the past two seasons, Keddy
also has played varsity golf and baseball at Tech and
helped the Eagles win the Central Mass. Division 2 title
last spring. An honors student, Keddy has qualified for
free tuition at a state college for his advanced math
MCAS score. His most memorable sports moments
include defeating two-time Central Mass. champion
Gardner last year. Keddy will attend Worcester Academy
in the fall. He is the son of Tim and Vanessa Keddy of
Worcester.
Zack L’Ecuyer
Fitchburg High
Senior, Center
The 5-foot-10, 170-pound L’Ecuyer
led all Central Mass. scorers with
25 goals and 51 points this season
for the Red Raiders, who finished
17-3-2, won the Coughlin Conference
title and advanced to the quarterfinals
of the district tournament. A four-year
member of the varsity, he finished his
career with 123 points and more than
50 goals, earning team MVP honors
as a senior and the coach’s award as a junior. As a
sophomore, L’Ecuyer helped Fitchburg defeat rival
Leominster to reach the Central Mass. final against
North Middlesex. His most memorable sports moment
is defeating Worcester in a playoff game last year.
L’Ecuyer’s uncle, David, played hockey at the University
of New Hampshire. He will attend Merrimack College in
the fall and hopes to become a civil engineer after
graduation. He is the son of Kim and Ron L’Ecuyer of
Fitchburg.
Matt Lemire
St. Bernard’s High
Junior, Center
Only a junior, the 6-foot, 175-pound
Lemire had 24 goals and 17 assists
to lead the Bernardians to a
17-6-1 record, the Catholic Central
League title and a berth in the Division
1 North semifinals. He scored
two goals and assisted on another in
St. Bernard’s 4-1 quarterfinal win over
St. Peter-Marian. Lemire also scored
in the Bernardians’ playoff victory over
Arlington. One of Lemire’s best games this season was
a three-goal, two-assist effort against Archbishop Williams.
He also netted a hat trick in a regular-season
win over SPM. The conference’s leading scorer and
co-MVP, Lemire also plays varsity lacrosse for St.
Bernard’s. Just 16 years old, he hopes to play hockey
in college and major in business management. Lemire
enjoys golf in his spare time. He is the son of Tammi
and Vinny Lemire of Townsend.
Kevin Miller
Wachusett Regional
Sophomore, Goalie
The 5-foot-6, 123-pound Miller is
the only sophomore member of
the Super Team and one of two
underclassmen, but he was the main
reason why the Mountaineers finished
second in the Quinn Conference with
a 13-5-5 record and reached the
semifinals of the Central Mass. Tournament,
losing to eventual champion
Gardner, 3-2. Miller made 30 saves
to help Wachusett upset Marlboro, 3-2, during the
regular season, which he considers his most memorable
moment in sports. Miller posted six shutouts this
season en route to a 1.72 GAA. He also earned team
MVP honors and a berth on the Metro West all-tournament
team. Miller hopes to play college hockey. His
father played hockey at Shepherd Hill in the ’80s, and
his brother, Greg, played for the Boston Junior Bruins.
Miller is the son of Gail and Kevin Miller of Rutland.
Colin Mulvey
St. Peter-Marian High
Senior, Center/Wing
The 5-foot-9, 165-pound Mulvey led
the Guardians to the Division 1 state
tournament in coach Mike Germain’s
final season, which included a playoff
win over Woburn. St. Peter-Marian
reached the postseason with an
improbable, 4-3 win over Franklin the
regular-season finale. In that game,
junior center Matt Lopes scored a
natural hat trick in a span of less than
seven minutes in the third period, all short-handed. A
four-year member of the varsity and team captain as a
senior, Mulvey entered the program as a 5-foot-2,
100-pound freshman. His most memorable sports
moments include winning the Mousquri Quebec Tournament
with his youth team. Mulvey’s sister was a standout
athlete at Burncoat. Undecided about his plans for next
year, he hopes to continue playing in college. He is the
son of Judy Mulvey of Worcester.
Wes Russell
Marlboro High
Senior, Defenseman
The only repeat member of the T&G
Super Team, the 6-foot-1,
200-pound Russell played four varsity
seasons, helping the Panthers win a
Division 3 state championship as a
freshman. A team captain this season,
Russell had eight goals and 14 assists
to lead Marlboro to a 14-3-4
record and a berth in the district
quarterfinals. A Central Mass. all-star,
defensive player of the year and former MVP of the
Metro West Tournament, Russell is also captain of the
Panthers’ baseball team this spring and was the team’s
MVP last year. He is undecided about college, but
would like to continue his hockey career and eventually
own his own business. Russell enjoys lifting weights,
fishing and playing basketball in his spare time. He is
the son of Kelly and Stanley Russell of Marlboro.
Ben Siok
St. John’s High
Senior, Goalie
The Pioneers went just 5-10-6, but
the 5-foot-10, 185-pound Siok
posted a 2.42 GAA against the some of
the best competition in the state. St.
John’s, which was shut out six times,
tied BC High, St. John’s Prep and
Xaverian, all Division 1A Tournament
teams, and defeated St. Peter-Marian
twice. A team captain, MVP and Greater
Boston All-Area selection, Siok
considers St. John’s win over rival SPM at the DCU Center
this season among his most memorable sports
moments. Siok will attend Franklin Pierce University in the
fall and play hockey for the Ravens, whose assistant
coaches include former St. John’s star Jayme Harrington.
Siok has also played golf, lacrosse and football for the
Pioneers. He enjoys working out in his spare time and
hopes to pursue a career a criminal justice after college.
He is the son of Jill and David Siok of Holden.
SUNDAY TELEGRAM APRIL 20, 2008 F5
Boys’ Track
Trent Baltzell
Sutton High
Junior, High Jump
Baltzell makes his third appearance
on the T&G Super Team
after winning the Division 3 state
championship and finishing tied
for second in the New Englands
in his specialty. The 6-foot-4
leaper was Sutton’s captain in
indoor track and cross country.
He was a Suburban League
all-star for the second straight
year, and he holds the school record in the high
jump at 6-7. His most memorable sports moment
was helping Sutton win the 2004 Central Mass.
District 2 cross country title, the first in school
history. Baltzell’s sister, Kelsey, was a T&G All-Star
in track and cross country. He is unsure about
where he’ll attend college, but would like to compete
at the Division 1 level with the goal of someday
being a coach or athletic director. He is the son of
Mark and Jane Baltzell of Sutton.
Dave Hausherr
North Middlesex Regional
Senior, Mile
The distance specialist makes
his fifth appearance on a T&G
Super Team, having won the mile
at the Central Mass. Division 1
meet in Fitchburg. He followed
that by winning the 2 mile in the
Division 2 state meet in 9 minutes,
27.93 seconds. He is a
three-year captain in both track
and cross country. He has been
team MVP the last two years in cross country and
indoor track. Hausherr, a Mid-Wach A all-star in
cross country, finished second in the Central Mass.
Division 1 championship in the fall after winning the
event as a junior. Son of Nancy and Steven Hausherr
of Townsend, he is headed to La Salle University
in the fall.
Brian Martel
Nipmuc Regional
Senior, Long Jump
This versatile athlete ran the
600 meters and a 1,600 relay
leg and competed in the long
jump for coach Richard Auger’s
Warriors. His leap of 20 feet, 4 1 ⁄4
inches was good for first place in
the Division 4 state meet. He
followed that by finishing 19th in
the all-class state meet. Martel
also competed in cross country
and outdoor track. He helped the Nipmuc soccer
team reach the state semifinals as a sophomore and
senior. The 6-foot senior holds school records at
600 meters (1:27) and 600 yards (1:21). He was
second in the 600 meters in the Central Mass.
meet in 1:29.36. Martel plans to go to UMass-
Lowell after graduation with the goal of becoming a
mechanical engineer. He is the son of Lynne and
Richard Martel of Uxbridge.
Colin Ogilvie
Hopedale High
Senior, 2 Mile
Ogilvie earned his fourth appearance
on the T&G Super Team
by winning the 2 mile at the Division
4 state meet in 9 minutes,
39.69 seconds. He made the
Super Team team each of the last
three years in cross country.
Ogilvie helped Hopedale win the
Division 2 state cross country title
with his fifth-place finish. He lists
helping the Blue Raiders win state titles as a sophomore
and senior as his most memorable sports
moments. Long-distance success apparently runs
as his family as his brother, Thompson, and sister,
Meg, were both T&G Super Teamers. Ogilvie, who
enjoys music, reading and being with friends and
family, is headed to Bowdoin College in the fall. He
is the son of Marillee and David Ogilvie of Hopedale.
Ryan Ruffing
Westboro High
Senior, 300 Meters
Ruffing had a spectacular
indoor
track season, setting
meet records in the
300 meters at the
Central Mass. Division
1 (36.88) and
the Division 3 state
meets (35.42) before
winning the
all-state (35.56) and finishing third at
New Englands (35.34). He also won the
MSTCA Elite Meet at Roxbury’s Reggie
Lewis Center in February. His Division 3
state time was the fastest of the season
in Massachusetts. Ruffing also ran the
800 relay. He is a standout soccer player
and was a T&G Division 1 all-star and
Mid-Wach B all-star in the fall. The
6-foot-2 Ruffing is a repeat on the T&G
Super Team in indoor track, having won
the Central Mass. Division 1 300 title last
year in 37.87 seconds. He is the son of
Mary Jane and Matt Ruffing of Westboro.
William Vitello
Jake Begnoche
The team includes the top finishers from the Central Mass. and state championships.
Blackstone-Millville Regional
Senior, 300 Meters
The versatile — and speedy —
senior won the Division 4
state title in the 300 meters in
36.08 seconds at the Reggie
Lewis Center in Roxbury to earn
his spot on the T&G Super
Team. He was also a Super
Teamer in outdoor track last
year, finishing first in the 200 at
the Central Mass. championships.
The 6-foot-1 Begnoche has been dominant
in the shorter distances, holding school records in
the 100 (10.7 seconds), 200 (22.3) and 400
(50.6). He also plays soccer at BMR. Begnoche
hopes to study physical therapy in college. His
sister, Sarah, was a 1,000-point scorer at BMR,
playing from 1998 to 2002. He is the son of
Louise and Lucien Begnoche of Millville.
Dennis Kott
St. John’s High
Senior, 600 Meters
Kott has so far had an eventful
senior year, first helping the
Pioneers win the Division 1 state
soccer title as a starting outside
midfielder, then keying St. John’s
victory in the Division 1 track and
field meet. Kott was the Central
Mass. Division 1 champ in the 600
meters before finishing fourth in the
D1 state meet. He also ran on SJ’s
1,600 relay team, which finished second in the state
division meet. He considers winning the state soccer
title his most memorable sports moment. He has
competed in track and soccer since he was a freshman.
His sister, Stephanie, was captain of the Notre
Dame Academy’s state champion field hockey in
2005. Kott is headed to the Loyola University of
Chicago, where he plans to continue running track.
He is the son of Debra and Carlton Kott of Rutland.
Tim Mazeika
Millbury High
Junior, 2 Mile
Mazeika makes his second
appearance on a T&G Super
Team after winning the 2 mile at
the Central Mass. Division 2 meet
in 10 minutes, 17.09 seconds.
He also competes in the mile and
1,000 and set the Southern
Worcester County League record
in the 1,000 in 2:46.7. Mazeika
was sixth in the Division 4 state
meet in the mile (4:36.41). His goal is break 10
minutes in the 2 mile and 2 minutes in the 800
meters. He made his first T&G Super Team in the
fall with his fifth-place finish in the Central Mass.
cross country meet. Besides running, he enjoys
being with friends. He lists helping Millbury win the
SWCL title as his most memorable sports moment.
He is the son of Elizabeth and John Mazeika of
Millbury.
Andrew Piscitelli
Millbury High
Junior, Shot Put
The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder won
the Central Mass. Division 2
title in February with a career-best
throw of 46 feet, 1 3 ⁄4 inches. He
followed that with a third-place
finish in the Division 4 state meet
(44-3- 1 ⁄4) and 16th at the all-state
meet (45-3). Piscitelli was also the
Southern Worcester County
League champion and helped the
Woolies win their first SWCL championship. He was
a SWCL champ in the discus last spring, following in
the footsteps of his uncle, Frank Piscitelli, who was
one of Millbury High’s best ever in the event. Piscitelli
is undecided about college, but would like to compete
in track at a Division 1 school. He enjoys freewheeling
and lifting weights in his spare time. He is
the son of Sandra and John Piscitelli of Millbury.
St. John’s High
Senior, shot put
Vitello won the
Central Mass. title
in his specialty and
helped his team win
the Division 1 meet
with a heave of 44
feet, 10 1 ⁄2 inches.
He is also an accomplished
football
player, having been
a captain at St. John’s in the fall and a
Division 1 North all-star as a linebacker.
He says that the Pioneers’ overtime
Super Bowl victory over Minnechaug as a
junior was his most memorable sports
moment. Vitello intends to continue
playing football in college at Washington
& Lee University, where he plans to study
business. He enjoys playing basketball,
lifting weights and being with friends. Son
of Janet and William Vitello of Framingham,
his brother, Dave, was a standout
soccer goalkeeper at St. John’s, helping
the Pioneers win a state title.
Kevin Stechler
Luke Doherty Munro
Hudson High
Junior, 1,000 Meters
Doherty Munro pulled out a
narrow victory in the 1,000
meters at the Central Mass.
Division 2 meet to help the
Hawks win the district title and
earn a spot on his first T&G
Super Team. With his secondplace
finish, he helped Hudson
win the Division 4 state crown,
and he considers that team
accomplishment his most memorable sports
moment. It wasn’t his only highlight, though, as he
set school records in the 1,000 (2 minutes,
36.16 seconds) and the 3,200 relay, and in the
fall was the Mid-Wach C cross country champion.
Doherty Munro has competed in cross country as
well as indoor and outdoor track for three years.
He is the son of Alison Doherty and Stuart Munro
of Hudson.
Sam Le Beau
Auburn High
Le Beau won his specialty in the
Central Mass. Division 2 meet
in 8.3 seconds, then bettered his
time with an 8.25 with his second-place
finish in the Division 4
state meet. He was 19th in the
all-state meet. He holds the
Auburn High record in the hurdles
with a personal best 7.9 and was
a SWCL all-star this year. Le Beau
also runs the 800 and 1,600 relays and competes
in the long jump. He has run cross country the last
three years and was captain this year. He is also
captain of the outdoor track team. He enjoys playing
the guitar, listening to and writing music as well
as running. His college plans are up in the air, but
he is considering UMass-Lowell and Hartford. He is
the son of Rosemary and William Le Beau of
Auburn.
Sean Mitchell
St. John’s High
Senior, 600 Meters
The 6-foot Mitchell makes his
third appearance on the T&G
Super Team, earning his spot with a
first-place finish in the 600 meters
(personal-best 1 minute, 22.35
seconds) at the Division 1 state
meet. His performance helped the
Pioneers to a second-place finish.
A week later, Mitchell came in
second (1:23.03) at the all-state
meet. Mitchell also helped St. John’s set a Central
Mass. record in the 1,600 relay. He won the CMass
title in the 600 as a junior. Mitchell is also accomplished
on the soccer pitch where he helped the
Pioneers win the Division 1 state title. He considers
that his most memorable sports moment. The son of
Cathy and Rob Mitchell of Milford, he plans to attend
the University of New Hampshire in the fall.
Andrew Powell
Westboro High
Senior, 55 Meters
Stechler was the
Rangers’ co-MVP
with Ryan Ruffing
after setting school
records in the
55-meter dash (6.71
seconds) and the
800 relay (1:33.34).
He won the Central
Mass. Division 1 title
in the 55 in 6.81 and helped the Rangers
take the district title in the 800
relay in 1:40.2. Stechler has run
indoor track the last three years and
outdoor track for four years. He considers
winning his first race (100
meters) when he was a sophomore as
his most memorable sports moment.
Stechler set the school record in the
100 that year. He enjoys magic and
video games, and he plans to go to
Rhodes College next year to study
computer science. He is the son of
3,200: Nashoba (Joe Doyle, Brendon Aylaian, Anthony Raduazo, Coby Horowitz)
St. John’s High
Senior, High Jump/55 Hurdles
This talented athlete makes his
fourth appearance on the T&G
Super Team, earning his spot by
winning Central Mass. Division 1
titles in the high jump (6 feet, 7
inches) and 55-meter hurdles (7.83
seconds). Both performances were
meet records. He followed that by
winning the high jump at the Division
1 state meet and the all-state meet.
Last month, he was third in the pentathlon and fifth in
the high jump at the National Scholastic Indoor Track
Championships in New York. He earned All-America
honors in both events. Powell was also a two-time
Super Teamer in soccer, helping the Pioneers win the
state title in the fall. The son of Joanne and Richard
Powell of Charlton, he plans to attend Bucknell University,
where he will study economics.
Relay Teams
Zack Sylvestre
Brett Haschig
Oakmont Regional
Junior, 600 Meters
The 5-foot-10 junior had a big
season with first place finishes
in the 600 meters at the Central
Mass. Division 2 meet (1 minute,
29.07 seconds) and the Division
4 state championship (1:24.72)
to earn his first spot on the T&G
Super Team. He considers
winning his event at the state
division meet his most memorable
sports moment. He was 19th at the all-state
meet (1:28.22). Haschig was a captain for coaches
Dan DuFour and Tim Douglas and made all-star
teams for two other newspapers, the Sentinel &
Enterprise and Gardner News. He also plays soccer
at Oakmont. His college plans are undecided, but
he’s considering Gordon College, UMass-Lowell
and Tufts University with the hope of someday being
a doctor. He’s the son of Greg and Charlette Haschig
of Westminster.
Alan Mann
Gardner High
Senior, 1,000
Sylvestre makes his
fifth appearance on
the T&G Super Team
following a stellar indoor
season in which he won
the Centeral Mass,
Division 1 title in the
1,000, set a school
record at the distance
and qualified for the
nationals in the mile. He was the Wildcats’
MVP and captain, honors he also had running
cross country in the fall. Last season,
Sylvestre was part of the Wildcats’ distance
medley relay team that set a state indoor
record. As a freshman, he was a member of
the cross country team that made it to the
states for the first time in 20 years. Sylvestre,
who considers winning the Central
Mass. title in the mile as a junior as his most
memorable sports moment, is weighing his
college options between UMass-Amherst
and UMass-Lowell. He is the son of Patricia
and Charles Sylvestre of Gardner.
Division 2
800: Hudson (Chris Walker, Geoff King, Derek Palatino, Brian Muller)
1,600: Sutton (Mike Thyden, Pat Ellessar, Trent Baltzell, Zachary Walsh)
3,200: Hudson (Conor Grogan, Kevin Delaney, Luke Doherty-Munro, Brian Vinciullo)
Oakmont Regional
Senior, 300 Meters
Mann had a breakout senior
indoor season to make his first
T&G Super Team. He won the 300
meters at the Central Mass. meet at
Fitchburg High in 38.70 seconds, a
performance he considers his most
memorable sports moment. He
followed that by finishing fourth in
the Division 4 state meet (37.03)
and 19th in the all-state (37.01).
Mann was a captain for coaches Dan Dufour and Tim
Douglas and a Gardner News all-star. He also runs
outdoor track and competed in cross country as a
junior. He won the Oakmont coaches’ award in outdoor
track as a sophomore. Mann is considering WPI,
the University of Connecticut and the University of New
Hampshire. He wants to become a chemical engineer
and design hydrogen-powered vehicles. He is the son
of Denise and Edward Mann of Westminster.
Brian Muller
Hudson High
Sophomore, 55 Meters
Coach Kathy Vinciullo called
Muller her MVP after he
helped the Hawks win the Division
4 state title at the Reggie Lewis
Center in Roxbury. He generated
points by finishing second in the
55 and the long jump, but it was
his come-from-behind performance
on the anchor leg of the
800 relay that did the trick for
Hudson. He considers that race and winning the
state title the most memorable sports moments of
his career. Muller, who was a wrestler last winter,
earned his spot on the T&G Super Team by finishing
first in the 55 meters at the Central Mass.
Division 2 meet in Fitchburg. Muller, who has also
played football and baseball for the Hawks, is the
son of Claudia and Milton Muller of Hudson.
Anthony Raduazo
Nashoba Regional
Senior, 2 Mile
Raduazo won the Central Mass.
Division 1 title in the 2 mile,
then came in first in the Division 3
state meet, a performance that
helped the resurgent Chieftains
win the state title. His most memorable
sports moment, though,
came when he led Nashoba to
the Central Mass. cross country
championship in the fall, the
Chieftains’ first district title in the sport in 10 years.
He was part of Nashoba’s 4-mile relay team that
finished fifth in the nationals in New York. A member
of the National Honor Society, Raduazo plans to
attend Williams College. His parents were standout
cross country runners in high school and became
marathoners. He is the son of Celeste and Rocco
Raduazo of Bolton.
Brian Vinciullo
Hudson High
Junior, Mile
Vinciullo helped the
Hawks cruise to
the Central Mass.
Division 2 title by
winning the mile in 4
minutes, 47.18 seconds.
He was on
Hudson’s winning
3,200 relay squad,
too. His best time in
the mile is 4:38. The Hawks, coached
by Brian Vinciullo’s mother, Kathy,
followed their Central Mass. victory by
winning the Division 4 state meet, a
performance Vinciullo considers his
most memorable in sports. Besides the
mile and the 3,200 relay, Vinciullo also
runs the 1,000. He was a cross country
captain and Mid-Wach C all-star in the
fall. This is his third year running cross
country and indoor and outdoor track.
He is the son of Kathy and Tim Vinciullo
of Hudson.
Girls’ Track
Ashlyn Derosier
Shrewsbury High
Senior, 55 Hurdles
The 5-foot-10 Derosier
is making her fifth
Super Team appearance,
her third straight
for indoor track to go
with one for soccer and
one for outdoor track.
The two-time Division 1
district champion in the
55-meter hurdles entering
this season, she successfully defended
her title in a time of 9.12 seconds. A versatile
star, she also competed in the high
jump, 800 relay and shot put. Derosier was
a starter and captain on the Colonials’
soccer team, a key part of the defensive
effort that helped push Shrewsbury to a
berth in the Division 1 state final last fall.
Her older sister, Amanda, was also a hurdler
for Shrewsbury. She is daughter of
Linda and Jay Derosier of Shrewsbury.
Stephanie Ellis
Gardner High
Sophomore, Mile
The 5-foot-1 Ellis makes
her second Super Team
appearance this school
year, after appearing in
cross country last fall. She
earned this nod after winning
the mile at the District
E Invitational in 5 minutes,
29.54 seconds, beating
the second-place finisher
by more than 16 seconds. She turned to the
2 mile at the Division 3 state meet and placed
fifth with a time of 11:39.75. During the fall,
her third-place finish at the Central Mass.
Division 1 championships helped Gardner
qualify for the Division 1 state meet for the
first time in more than 30 years. In her spare
time, Ellis enjoys Irish step dancing. She is
the daughter of Lisa and Michael Ellis of
Gardner.
Jessica Jarrard
Hudson Catholic
Junior, 2 Mile
Jarrard pulled the
interesting trick of
winning the 2 mile at the
District E Invitational for
a team that doesn’t field
an entire squad. Training
with private coach
Rodger Anderson this
winter, Jarrard posted a
time of 11 minutes,
56.15 seconds to capture the event. Her
most memorable sports moment, though,
was running 11:26 in the race at the Winter
Festival at the Reggie Lewis Center. She is
making her second Super Team appearance
after also earning the honor in cross
country last fall, when she was the Colonial
Athletic League champion and placed 24th
in the state meet. A resident of Shrewsbury,
she is the daughter of Cathy Fitzgerald
and Robert Jarrard.
Marlboro High
Junior, 1,000 Meters
The 5-foot-2 Kunycky
won the 1,000 meters at
the District E Invitational in
3 minutes, 13.04 seconds.
She then went to the Division
2 state championship
and chopped the time
down to 3.04.69 — an
improvement of more than
10 seconds from her sophomore
year — and took third place. She lists
that moment as one of her most memorable
in sports, as well as competing with 3,200
relay team as a sophomore at the national
meet in New York. Also successful off the
track, Kunycky serves as class treasurer, is
ranked first in her class and a member of A
Step Above dance company. She hopes to
someday study environmental science. She
is the daughter of Mary Jane and Neil
Kunycky of Marlboro.
Lisa Reedich
Brianna Kunycky
Bromfield School
Junior, 1,000 Meters
A
junior among a senior-laden
Trojans squad, Reedich made
her mark by winning the 1,000
meters at the District E Invitational
in 3 minutes, 12.82 seconds.
She placed third in the
event at the Division 4 state
meet, an event teammate Bo
Dunn won. The two then combined
in the 3,200 relay victory
to help Bromfield to the team title. Reedich is making
her third Super Team appearance, having appeared
in cross country as an eighth-grader and a freshman.
The cross country team has won three straight state
championships, a series of experiences she lists as
her most memorable in sports. She is the daughter of
Sue and Doug Reedich of Harvard.
Kaylee DeVincent
The team includes the top finishers at the Central Mass. and state championships.
Algonquin Regional
Junior, Shot Put
The 5-foot-10 DeVincent
participated in
indoor track for the first
time this winter and
made an immediate
impact, throwing a personal
best of 34 feet,
10 1 ⁄2 inches at the District
E Invitational to win
first place. She then
advanced to the Division 2 State meet and
placed sixth with a throw of 34-1- 3 ⁄4. DeVincent
is currently participating in her third
season of outdoor track as well. Her most
memorable sports moment was throwing
the discus a school-record 103 feet, 5
inches. In her free time, DeVincent enjoys
lifting weights and hanging out with friends
and hopes to eventually become a veterinarian.
She is the daughter of Tina DeVincent
of Southboro.
Shelby Farland
Tantasqua Regional
Junior, High Jump
The 5-foot-7 Farland
cleared 5-1 at the
District E Invitational to win
the Division 1 meet and
earn her second Super
Team appearance. A
forward on the Warriors’
field hockey team, she
earned a spot last fall in
only her second varsity
season. As a captain this past season,
Farland also qualified for the state divisional
meet in the 55 and 300. She is a two-time
SWCL All-Star in field hockey, indoor track
and outdoor track. In her spare time, she
enjoys playing sports and spending time
with her friends. Her father played football
for Tantasqua and WPI. She is the daughter
of Karin and Rick Farland of Sturbridge.
Emily Jones
Bromfield School
Junior, 2 Mile
Although just a junior,
the 5-foot-7 Jones is
making her 11th Super
Team appearance. She
earns this nod after
running the fastest 2 mile
in the country at the
Division 4 state championships
with a time of
10 minutes, 31.82 seconds
— after sitting out the District E Invitational
with an injury. Not stopping there,
Jones also recorded first-place finishes at the
all-state and New England meets. Regardless
of her lengthy individual résumé, Jones still
lists her most memorable sports moment as
winning the team Division 2 cross country
title for the third straight time last fall — a
season when she was named the Gatorade
Cross Country Runner of the Year for Massachusetts.
She is the daughter of Susan
Hunter-Jones and Dan Jones of Harvard.
Kristalena Lamore
Hudson High
Senior, 55 Meters
The 5-foot-6 Lamore set
a District E meet record
by winning the 55
meters in 7.52 seconds.
She then recorded a pair
of second-place finishes in
the Division 4 meet in the
55 and long jump. This is
her first Super Team appearance
for indoor track,
after making the team for outdoor track last
spring. That season, she broke the triple
jump record at the Division 4 state meet
(38 feet, 3 1 ⁄2 inches) and was named the
meet’s outstanding female athlete, an
accomplishment she lists as her most memorable
in sports. Lamore will attend the
University of Hartford next fall with an eye
toward becoming a teacher and helping
children. She is the daughter of Karen and
Joe Lamore of Hudson.
Angie Stakus
Nipmuc Regional
Senior, 55 Hurdles
The 5-foot-8 Stakus won the 55
hurdles at the District E Invitational
in 9.15 seconds. The victory
served as a bit of redemption for
Stakus, who missed the event as a
junior because of commitments
she had with the Olympic Development
Team, for which she
competes in the skeleton. She is
set to compete for Nipmuc in the
spring as well, as the three-time defending Dual Valley
Conference champion in the 100 hurdles and 300
hurdles. Stakus is planning to attend the University of
Maine or the University of New Hampshire in the fall and
major in wildlife ecology. Her brother, Charlie Stakus,
was a Super Team member for golf in 2002. She is the
daughter of Cindy and Charlie Stakus of Mendon.
Nicole Dion
Lunenburg High
Senior, Shot Put
A
versatile athlete,
Dion made her biggest
mark this season by
winning the shot put at
the District E Invitational
with a toss of 31 feet,
9 1 ⁄4 inches. She also
owns a school record for
the 800-meter relay,
which she set during last
year’s spring season, when her team placed
seventh in the race at the state meet. That
was an immediate impact for Dion, who
played softball her first two years at the
school. Dion, who also competed in the
hurdles and high jump in track, was captain
of the Blue Knights’ field hockey squad last
fall. She lists competing in the Central Mass.
Tournament with the field hockey team as her
most memorable moment. She is the daughter
of Laura and Jim Dion of Lunenburg.
Katherine Finnegan
Bromfield School
Junior, 300 Meters
The 5-foot-7 Finnegan
helped the Trojans to
the Division E Invitational
title by winning the 300
meters in 43.78 seconds,
setting a school and meet
record. She followed that
by lowering her mark to
41.94 at the Division 4
state meet to earn second
place, a moment she lists as her most memorable
in sports, and help coach Henry Phelan’s
team to the title. A return Super Team
member, Finnegan also participates on the
Trojans’ cross country and outdoor track
teams, while also enjoying playing soccer. In
her free time, Finnegan enjoys participating
in Irish dance and writing poetry. She is the
daughter of Mary and Steve Finnegan of
Harvard.
Jamie Kelley
North Middlesex Regional
Junior, 300 Meters
The 5-foot-4 Kelley
earns her Super
Team slot after winning
the 300 meters at the
District E Invitational in
43.65 seconds. This
season marked the
second straight year she
qualified for the state
meet. Only a runner for
one season of the school year, she also is
a member of the Patriots’ field hockey and
lacrosse teams. Kelley has earned Central
Mass. all-star honors in field hockey. As a
sophomore, she helped both the field
hockey and lacrosse squads to a Central
Mass. Tournament semifinal. She carries
forth a family tradition on the lacrosse field,
where sisters Shawna and Kaitlyn were key
contributors for North Middlesex. She is the
daughter of Lori and John Kelley of Pepperell.
Liz Lee
Bromfield School
Senior, Mile
The 5-foot-2 Lee continues
the honors for the
Trojans’ powerful distance
corps, making her eighth
overall Super Team appearance
and fourth
straight for indoor track.
She won the mile at the
District E Invitational
(5:26.87) and placed third
at the Division 4 state championships,
where she was also a member of the winning
3,200-meter relay team. A three-time
Super Team member in cross country, she
lists her most memorable sports moment as
winning the state championship in that sport
for the third straight year last fall. In her
free time, she enjoys listening to music,
writing poetry and bowling. She is the
daughter of Lisa Stanley and Thomas Lee
of Harvard.
Kimberly Ureña
Marlboro High
Junior, 600 Meters
Ureña’s time of 1:40.18 was
almost two seconds better
than her nearest competitor in
the 600 meters and helped the
Panthers to the District E Division
1 team title, defeating 14-time
defending champion Wachusett
and pre-meet favorite Shrewsbury.
She lists winning that race
as her most memorable moment
in sports. The 5-foot-6 Ureña has even performed
slightly better than that, owning a school record of
1:39.4 in the event. A two-time Mid-Wach A all-star in
indoor track, Ureña also competes in cross country
