Highlights of Operations<br />

Our subsidiary <strong>Chevron</strong> <strong>Liberia</strong> Limited is explor<strong>in</strong>g for energy resources <strong>in</strong> deepwater concessions off the coast of <strong>Liberia</strong>.<br />

Work<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>in</strong>ternational and <strong>Liberia</strong>n partners, we are drill<strong>in</strong>g some of the first deepwater wells <strong>in</strong> <strong>Liberia</strong> <strong>in</strong> decades.<br />

As part of our commitment to <strong>Liberia</strong>, we created the <strong>Chevron</strong>-<strong>Liberia</strong> Economic Development Initiative. Through this <strong>in</strong>itiative,<br />

<strong>Chevron</strong> has <strong>in</strong>vested <strong>in</strong> a variety of successful programs focused on health, education and enterprise development.<br />

Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Portfolio<br />

Exploration<br />

In <strong>Liberia</strong>, <strong>Chevron</strong> works through our subsidiary <strong>Chevron</strong> <strong>Liberia</strong> Limited. In September 2010, the <strong>Liberia</strong>n government granted<br />

<strong>Chevron</strong> approval to acquire <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>in</strong> three deepwater blocks. Just a few months later, <strong>in</strong> 2011, <strong>Chevron</strong> opened an office <strong>in</strong><br />

the capital, Monrovia.<br />

<strong>Chevron</strong> is the operator of and has a 45 percent <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> the blocks, LB-11, LB-12 and LB-14. The three blocks are between<br />

12 and 110 miles (20 to 180 km) south of Monrovia and cover an area of about 2 million acres (8,100 sq km).<br />

Deepwater exploration wells were drilled <strong>in</strong> the LB-11 block and <strong>in</strong> the LB-12 block dur<strong>in</strong>g 2012. Results from that drill<strong>in</strong>g and 3-<br />

D seismic data are be<strong>in</strong>g studied.<br />

The wells, drilled with the support of several <strong>Liberia</strong>n companies, are <strong>Chevron</strong>'s first deepwater exploration wells <strong>in</strong> the country.<br />

In the Community<br />

<strong>Chevron</strong> has been do<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> Africa for a century. Wherever we work on the cont<strong>in</strong>ent, we seek to improve the quality of<br />

life by employ<strong>in</strong>g and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g local workers and <strong>in</strong>vest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> communities. <strong>Chevron</strong>'s aim is to develop energy that will cont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />

to support economic and social progress.<br />

In 2010, the year <strong>Chevron</strong> began do<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> <strong>Liberia</strong>, we established the <strong>Chevron</strong>-<strong>Liberia</strong> Economic Development (C-<br />

LED) Initiative. Through this five-year effort, <strong>Chevron</strong> has committed $10.5 million to social <strong>in</strong>vestment programs <strong>in</strong> a country<br />

rebuild<strong>in</strong>g itself after civil war.<br />

<strong>Chevron</strong> is partner<strong>in</strong>g with the <strong>Liberia</strong>n government, national and <strong>in</strong>ternational nongovernmental organizations, and donors to<br />

deliver susta<strong>in</strong>able economic benefits to women, children and youth. Our efforts are focused on health, education and enterprise<br />

development. Among the 52 C-LED projects, 42 have been fully executed, eight more are pend<strong>in</strong>g review. Some of the projects<br />

that have been implemented <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

Health<br />

• Nationwide immunization aga<strong>in</strong>st measles for more than 550,000 children<br />

• Installation of modern public latr<strong>in</strong>es that provide 50,000 people with better sanitation<br />

• Water facilities <strong>in</strong> 40 communities that affect 100,000 people<br />

• Renovation of the children-under-5 cl<strong>in</strong>ic at John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital, where 3,000 children are seen each<br />

month<br />

• Enabl<strong>in</strong>g two doctors from Baylor University to exam<strong>in</strong>e an average of 3,000 patients per month<br />

• An upgrade of general medic<strong>in</strong>e, gynecology and maternity wards at Redemption Hospital<br />

• Improved access to reproductive health services for vulnerable families <strong>in</strong> the under-served communities of Grand<br />

Bassa<br />

• Seed capital for the Monrovia City Corporation to build the city's first green space/park area, <strong>in</strong>stall litter b<strong>in</strong>s citywide<br />

and set up a recycl<strong>in</strong>g center<br />

Enterprise Development<br />

• Microf<strong>in</strong>ance grants for women's groups and improvements to three local markets run by women serve more than<br />

100,000 people.<br />

• A three-year Mercy Corps program for more than 3,000 youth offers vocational tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, mentor<strong>in</strong>g, grants and<br />

microfranchis<strong>in</strong>g—a system that has created 150 small bus<strong>in</strong>esses.<br />

• A Youth Action International program tra<strong>in</strong>ed more than 300 women <strong>in</strong> bead<strong>in</strong>g, cater<strong>in</strong>g, cosmetology and tailor<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

taught them how to market their products locally and <strong>in</strong>ternationally.<br />

• The Entrepreneurship Center of Excellence for micro and small bus<strong>in</strong>esses was established at the University of<br />

Monrovia.<br />

Education<br />

• At Booker Wash<strong>in</strong>gton Institute, a fully furnished computer lab for vocational tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and state-of-the-art equipment for<br />

carpentry and mach<strong>in</strong>e workshops benefit 3,000 students every month.<br />

• A YMCA computer tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g program educates more than 2,000 young people annually.<br />

• Computers, pr<strong>in</strong>ters and Internet access at a YMCA youth center now serve an average of 200 students per day.<br />

• An <strong>in</strong>formation technology tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g computer lab—the first <strong>in</strong> the country—at Stella Maris Polytechnic Institute provides<br />

more than 2,000 students with computer tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. Some receive tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and test<strong>in</strong>g to become Cisco-certified IT<br />

professionals.<br />

In early 2012, <strong>Chevron</strong> announced a five-year agreement with Texas Children's Hospital of Houston, Texas, to expand the<br />

hospital's Global Health Corps <strong>in</strong>itiative. The program br<strong>in</strong>gs American doctors to the most medically underserved populations <strong>in</strong><br />

Africa to provide pediatric and maternal health care and professional health care tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. Through this program, specialists<br />

sponsored by <strong>Chevron</strong> serve assignments at John F. Kennedy Hospital <strong>in</strong> Monrovia.<br />
