Toi Awards held in Wellington.<br />

<strong>Te</strong> Waka Toi’s premiere award<br />

was recently awarded to Iritana<br />

Tawhiwhirangi.<br />

national speech competition,<br />

showcasing his fluency and<br />

oratory prowess.<br />

Whänau in Science K<br />

The Beehive was a buzz with<br />

budding Mäori scientists<br />

when more than 300 excited<br />

tamariki and rangatahi, along<br />

with teachers and whänau,<br />

carried out various experiments<br />

including extracting DNA from a<br />

strawberry.<br />

OCTOBER<br />

11 October – <strong>Te</strong> Aro Pä<br />

Visitors’ Centre L<br />

<strong>Te</strong> Aro Pä Visitors’ Centre<br />

opened in downtown Wellington<br />

giving Wellingtonians a rare<br />

glimpse into <strong>the</strong> capital city’s<br />

past. Inside <strong>the</strong> centre are <strong>the</strong><br />

preserved foundations of two<br />

whare ponga dating from <strong>the</strong><br />

1840s.<br />

22 – 23 October – Sir Graham<br />

Latimer Symposium M<br />

With <strong>the</strong> support of <strong>Te</strong> <strong>Puni</strong><br />

Kökiri and many o<strong>the</strong>rs, <strong>the</strong><br />

New Zealand Mäori Council<br />

organised a two-day symposium<br />

in Wellington to acknowledge<br />

Sir Graham’s legacy.<br />
