of <strong>Te</strong> Kïngitanga<br />

Dignitaries, iwi leaders and<br />

Mäori ga<strong>the</strong>red at Ngaruawähia<br />

to celebrate 150 years of <strong>the</strong><br />

Mäori King Movement. To mark<br />

<strong>the</strong> important occasion Kïngi<br />

Tuheitia unveiled a special<br />

edition issue of Kïngitanga<br />

stamps produced by New<br />

Zealand Post.<br />

6 June – BNZ Excellence in<br />

Mäori Farming Award 2008 F<br />

Dean and Kristen Nikora are<br />

this year’s winners of <strong>the</strong><br />

prestigious Ahuwhenua Trophy<br />

after following a wealth creation<br />

strategy judges described as<br />

“nothing short of outstanding”.<br />

17 – 19 June – Kapa Haka<br />

Kura Tuarua ä Motu 2008 G<br />

<strong>Te</strong> Piringa, from Manawatu/<br />

Horowhenua, won <strong>the</strong> overall<br />

aggregate title at <strong>the</strong> National<br />

Secondary Schools Kapa Haka<br />

Competition held at Wellington’s<br />

TSB Arena.<br />

25 June – CNI Iwi Collective<br />

Deed Signing H<br />

Representatives from seven iwi<br />

travelled to Wellington to sign a<br />

deed of settlement settling <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

interests in Central North Island<br />

Forestry assets and surrounding<br />

land. The seven iwi were Ngäi<br />

Tühoe, Ngäti Tüwharetoa, Ngäti<br />

Whakaue, Ngäti Whare, Ngäti<br />

Manawa, Ngäti Raukawa and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Affiliate <strong>Te</strong> Arawa iwi and<br />

hapü.<br />

20 – 27 July – Mäori<br />

Language Week 2008 I<br />

Mäori Language Week 2008 was<br />

a nationwide celebration of New<br />

Zealand’s official indigenous<br />

language with communities,<br />

organisations, kura and media<br />

promoting te reo Mäori.<br />

24 July – Google launches<br />

Mäori version<br />

A Mäori language version of <strong>the</strong><br />

Google homepage and search<br />

interface was launched and<br />

coincided with Mäori Language<br />

Week 2008.<br />
